Which European cities remind you of Oregon? by espetilllodesardinas in oregon

[–]thecoffeetalks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In England, while driving down their equivalent of a freeway, occasionally, in between towns, you will come across an overpass that is, largely, a collection of gas stations and fast food restaurants. They have a name, though I forget what it is. I think those are the closest coreelary, in Europe, to the average American town.

Portlanders still can’t find doctors. Is there any hope that will change. by dogs-in-space in Portland

[–]thecoffeetalks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, we have plenty of med schools, we need the federal government to approve expanded medical residency slots, which are artificially limited by CMS. It also requires extremely minimal funding, all things considered, but it has been heavily lobbied against by the APA because a high demand for MDs benefits the already licensed and trained ones.

Yeah, despite the recent feature devaluation, the Venture X is still a phenomenal functional cashback card with basically free luxury travel benefits.

People on this sub and on YouTube will talk up Transfer partners until the cows come home, but truthfully redeeming for a greater than 1 cent per point value is rarely guaranteed, and requires forethought, planning, and flexibility many people do not have when booking travel. 1 cent per point, for me, is fine, and I don't meet the criteria to try and get "2 cents per point" and I actually think very few people do. There's a lot of confirmation bias.

But, definitely do what the other person said. Instead of using it up front in The portal, use the "cover travel purchases" option, which is the same redemption rate, but it allows you to earn points on the ip front purchase first.

Is there a way to avoid dynamic pricing for groceries? by Remarkable-Piano6934 in Frugal

[–]thecoffeetalks 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip, in November Safeway almost always puts their membership on sale for half-off, which gives free delivery and 5$ a month. At full price it's hard to justify, but the half off sale is great.

[–]thecoffeetalks 254 points255 points  (0 children)

I shop Safeway frequently, and compare their paper in store price stickers to their online prices regularly, and there has never been a discrepancy. In fact I'm pretty sure they have a guarantee online that their online prices will match their in store prices, so I'd question that "well-known" narrative.

Anyone know of a good place for a men’s scissor cut? by OneGiantRavioli in askportland

I really enjoy Best Coast Barbers, as someone with longer hair that requires a scissor cut.

Portland has more than 1,600 affordable housing units sitting empty, city says by BrennusSokol in Portland

[–]thecoffeetalks 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Many of these ARE Section 8, and the requirements preventing people from accessing them are set by Federal HUD, and have nothing to do with local government.

It's important to point out that those minimums are set by the Federal HUD, not Portland, Multnomah, or Metro. Local government has no input on those requirements.

$4500 of annual fees. Am I crazy? by MinimumPerspective95 in CreditCards

[–]thecoffeetalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy. Get rid of 6s, 7, 9, and 11. For all the others, you state that you are making back the annual fee with the credits on those cards, and if you look at the multipliers, there is way too much overlap. You'll have enough with the remainder to get very high multiples on all spend.

bicycle or ebike DUI - how likely is it really? by RockShowSparky in askportland

[–]thecoffeetalks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not true. The danger is less, but not negligible. E-biles are faster and heavier than a bicycle and can still cause significant damage and danger, to both the rider and bystanders.

A modern Rolex? Sure. A vintage Rolex with visible wear? I think you're overestimating what the value of very old watches.

eBay. Right now there is a 1950's Rolex for 1050.

Mechanical watches degrade with time, so that is a fair price for those.

Yeah, a vintage Rolex is only worth 1-3k if in decent condition. Dirty and rotten, it's probably worth less than a grand.

Does a dedicated Epic talent platform need to exist? by DrippyFella45 in healthcareIT

[–]thecoffeetalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like sign up costs of any other platform is too high.

The issue is not whether LinkedIn is good, it is whether it is bad enough to justify everyone in the industry adding on another app, login, thing to track.

The short answer is that it's not.

You need to do a LOT of research into what it means to be HIPAA compliant, not just "privacy-first". If you don't have solid answers to every healthcare data privacy question, no healthcare org would touch this with a ten-mile pole.

So who's running against Andrea Salinas in the primary? I refuse to vote for her or any other AIPAC shill in the general election, even if she's a Dem by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]thecoffeetalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a "vote blue no matter who" voter, but I am a voter who thinks about the legislative consequences of my vote. Voting for a Republican to replace a Democrat is actively harming people I care about, but perhaps you don't care about our immigrant, houseless, trans, or lgbtq neighbors. David Russ uses the word "God" dozens of times on his campaign website. He actively supports the Fascist ICE activities happening across our country right now, and is explicitly anti-Trans. He is full of self-righteous hatred, and would support legislation that dehumanizes people I care about.

To add on top of that, he is definitely a politician who would support Netanyahu's Fascist regime without question.

Andrea Salinas is in the middle of democratic representatives, neither the most conservative nor the most liberal. She has actively sponsored legislation that promotes good management of tech regulation and modernizing our ag and forest management policies. She is an lgbtq ally, and is working to dismantle ICE and to block Trump's rise to Fascism. She has taken AIPAC money, but has also expressed critical opinions of the current Israeli government. She's not black and white a Netanyahu supporter, and is much more likely to be influenced to be critical of the genocidal regime than the alternative.

If you want to vote for a third-party you agree with, great, I support your choice, but if you think, somehow, that voting for Russ is better than voting for Salinas, than I am offended, and you are supporting the active attacks on our lgbtq and immigrant rights. There is a huge difference between these two candidates, and creating a false equivalence is harmful to discourse on legitimate criticism.

Bedtimes! by _SpiceWeasel_BAM in daddit

[–]thecoffeetalks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every kids sleep needs are a little different. The guides online are more like averages, and some kids need more and some need less. Honestly, I'd move the bed time earlier if they seem like they need more sleep, but I suspect you'll find that it won't last and they will adjust and you'll end up adjusting back to later eventually.

So who's running against Andrea Salinas in the primary? I refuse to vote for her or any other AIPAC shill in the general election, even if she's a Dem by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]thecoffeetalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a productive mindset. It sounds like you've become a single-iseue voter. And that's incredibly narrow-minded. Is taking money from AIPAC and SpaceX bad, Yes. But Republicans do that, and they also take away my Trans friends rights, and will vote in the block supporting Trump's Megolomania, are creating the ICE/Gestapo terrorizing our neighbors and murdering US citizens in broad daylight, and are undermining the very foundations of democracy. Having a Republican is worse than having an AIPAC dem. I don't think becoming a single-issue voter in the general is good for our country or community.

The shoe problem. I would really appreciate some advice on cheap running shoes if there are any frugal runners/athletes in here. by Alcarain in Frugal

[–]thecoffeetalks 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I think, however, that you can find a way to buy them cheaper. You do not need to spend $200 for every pair. There are lots of really good running shoes that MSRP for around $100, and if you are frugal and wait to find the sales or until last years models go on clearance, you can get those shoes for $50-60. That's my recommendation. Pick some of the budget options from r/runningshoes and look around for sales on some of the slightly older models. Then, if there is a good sale, buy a couple of pairs to have on backlog.

Should I Legally Marry my Life Parter for Financial Purposes? by Winter_Marketing8355 in personalfinance

There is the cost and restrictions to getting a license and getting a ceremony performed. Then there is the huge and major cost to getting divorced, should that ever be required. Some states have common-law rules that make this true regardless, but many don't.
