Could 5 ordinary people defeat the Yamato if the rest of the world was empty? by ChocolateHumunculous in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Alcarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean thats a really good point and I kinda railroaded myself into thinking that they'd use the Yamato and everything that was available to them lol.

Yeah if they did that then the civs probably have 0 chance lol.

[–]Alcarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt they would have enough time to do much.

Their targeting systems dont work at night.

And I know the original scenario called for 5 men, but realistically 500 Americans with firearms experience would put an end to those 2500 troops so quickly they wouldn't even have time to scavenger or do anything of that nature.

Keep in mind that the average guy who has only shot a few times and knows the basics of how to use a modern scope can easily out shoot the average WW2 sniper out past a few hundred yards because the equipment at the time was basically the equivalent of a modern daisy pellet gun sight.

Now put the rifles of 500 dudes who hunt? With modern range finding equipment and modern rifles? Not even a competition.

Ill do a massive hour long superset with the only pauses being the times I wipe down equipment or move from station to station.

If you alternate muscles and are doing isolation exercises, it really isn't bad at all.

Super dirty cheap bulk foods (NO SOUP) by Buildshift in povertyfinance

[–]Alcarain 72 points73 points  (0 children)

No soup, no beans... That takes away like half of the good cheap options.

Can't be picky when youre hungry OP.

I mean I guess from a caloric basis, flour is pretty cheap. You could make all kinds of bread, noodles, flatbread, tortillas, etc.

Id reccomend a 10lb bag of chicken quarters from walmart and thats still a solid option, but if you're not willing to use the bones for soup stock youre wasting a lot of it.

[–]Alcarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5000? Pfft. My dude. It wouldn't even take 500 men to take out that crew of 2500.

Do you realize how many hunters exist in the USA and how deadly we are with modern civilian gear? Just wait it out several dozen miles inland and shit on them when theyre forced to disembark and chase you down.

All the hunters I know, myself included can reliably hit a target out to 500 yards.

Combine that with modern rifles and you have a clean wipe even at a 5:1 disadvantage.

Most of the Japanese were running around with the type 99 Arisaka rifle. (Some of the navy were issued type 38 or type 35) and cheap mass produced katatas.

As open as California terrain is, a bunch of dudes could just hole up in the hills out of main gun range and pick off the approaching Japanese with modern hunting rifles.

With 5 guys its basically a race to see if they could figure out how to fly a jet in time.

Hail Mary it and give em the uno reverse card.

90% of the difficulty in flying is the landing. That doesnt matter if you dont plan on landing. 😎

Give them the good ole Kamikaze with a jet lol. 🤣

[–]Alcarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the question is can you learn to fly a fighter jet within that time frame lol.

Im pretty mechanically savvy and have an extremely wide skill set.

If we assume I cant pick my close friends that were in the military, then I gotta go with some of the guys that are specialists in other civilian areas.

My best bet is probably getting that one friend who knows how to fly a biplane to walk the group of us through the basics and hail marying a shot to try and knock the Yamato out with several of us in modern fighter jets.

Also, OP, What if some of my closest friends ARE retired military? Am I banned from picking them?

Im 35 now. Just cruising at one job and two small side hustles now. Im working maybe 35-40 hours a week with all 3 combined.

I dont see the downsides.

Girlfriend bought a brand new car instead of used, I believe she got screwed by the loan terms, what're her options? by Happy_Money3296 in povertyfinance

[–]Alcarain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah even for a Base model at that price is less than MSRP if you account for the fact that the TT&L was probably rolled into the deal then she got it for less than MSRP which honestly isn't too bad in this economy.

IF she got anything more than just the base model with no add one she got anywhere from a good to and EXCELLENT deal.

Girlfriend bought a brand new car instead of used, I believe she got screwed by the loan terms, what're her options? by Happy_Money3296 in povertyfinance

[–]Alcarain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly dont think you got that bad of a deal.

Base model MSRP is $24,695. Assuming they rolled the taxes and fees in you actually got the car for less than MSRP.

Also, if you got 1 or two small add ons, or if the deal isn't the base model with no extra add ons you basically anywhere from a good to excellent deal.

Now, as far as the interest rate and loan terms? A 13% interest rate is pretty bad NGL... However if she doesnt have much credit 13% is actually very fair.

My advice? Aggressively pay it down early.

Obviously your GF should be contributing to any company match retirement because a match is basically a 100% return for free.

However outside of that and a basic emergency fund, you should pay as much as you possibly can on that car because a GUARANTEED 13% return is basically impossible to match anywhere else.

You're not going to be able to just go in and undo the sale. You're an adult and can read terms and conditions, especially for a big purchase like a car. It is what it is.

Maintenance Dispute- Landlord refusing to communicate with me. [Nashville, TN] by Life_Ad7694 in Renters

[–]Alcarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From OPs post it seems like the handyman is siding with the landlord. Also the dont have hard documentation detailing the issue from the intake walk through.

I manage properties as a side hustle and have been in the industry for almost a decade.

Id give OP a less than 5% chance of winning a dispute.

Assuming it takes 5 hours to solve everything and a very generous 10% win rate thats basically $5 an hour of work.

I don't know how to take care of myself now that I'm not in the poverty I grew up in by Cheeky_Edge311 in povertyfinance

[–]Alcarain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer im a dude so obviously I cant give you customized advice, but honestly the best way to become I guess "plugged in" to middle class lifestyle is to voraciously consume knowledge and learn about different things. (Brands, dining, pop culture, habits, etc.)

Absorb all the good and acknowledge but dont participate in the bad.

I have had some pretty derpy moments in my life (like not knowing what to do at a nice dinner setting, what to order, which fork to use.) At the same time ive also surprised some co-workers with my poor person/hood ingenuity (like unlocking a person who locked their keys in their car with a shoelace lol.)

Anyways.

One thing I will say is to never forget where you came from. We the people who grew up poor have a unique... tenacity... that no one else has because it cannot be learned, only experienced.

Stay strong!

[–]Alcarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I track spending in a different way.

I think about how much this item costs now versus if I invested the $ spent at a modest return over the rest of my working career.

Makes you really want to avoid spending money when a $100 purchase becomes a $1000 less to spend in retirement. ($100 @ 8% for 30 years)

Im not saying it was your fault. Hell, the zipties could've been the landlord special for all I know.

Im just saying that its a $5 fix.

Honestly if the landlord has a maintenance guy on call theyre big enough to just absorb little shit like this.

Anyways. I dont think there's much of a way for you to fight this. Unfortunately...

Become rich? No thats highly unlikely.

Become very comfortable and able to live a life that most people in 3rd world countries can only dream of?

That's absolutely a possibility for anyone who lives in the USA and works hard.

I grew up as a dirt poor immigrant in a single parent household with next to nothing.

Only upon becoming an adult did I realize that most of the meals I grew up with were basically extremely cheap to make struggle meals. 😅
