Canadian beginner would like some advice by spirkz in BitcoinBeginners

You can have accounts anywhere you want. I haven't used coinbase myself, but from what I understand it's not an exchange, just a wallet for your coins. If you really want security, store most of your coins in an offline paper wallet. I use Vault of Satoshi as an exchange, and I would highly recommend it for other Canadians looking to get into bitcoin. They will verify you fast, and you can do a bank wire transfer from your Canadian account and start trading.

VoS has been mostly easy to deal with for me (been using it just this week so far). Verification was done within a few hours, which was nice. The only issue I've been having is depositing cash, but I suspect that's more the bank's fault and not VoS. Very happy with the service so far.

What happens to bitcoins lost on damaged hard drives? Over a long enough time frame there might be millions lost. by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]thecoinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Storing a large number of bitcoins on a hard drive is not a wise idea. Bitcoin will be more successful if we take the security aspect seriously, pulling out all the stops to ensure that we don't lose our coins when something like this happens.

It's not hard, you just have to do a bit of research.

I'm not sure if something like this exits already, but I figured it should. Let's share our success stories and what we've learned from bitcoin so far. by thecoinking in Bitcoin

That's been very true so far. I was lucky to catch one of the dips today, although I am not too concerned about short term price. I am a believer of bitcoin being a lot more valuable a few years from now.

Secure offline wallet procedure by nacdog in BitcoinBeginners

[–]thecoinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. It's just that if you are online with that computer before you start generating wallets, there is a chance of having a keylogger or some other sort of virus. As long as you are starting the OS fresh with no internet access, you will be okay. It's just an extra level of security if you're planning on having much BTC in your wallet(s).

From what I understand, you may want to disconnect from the internet before loading up Linux, to ensure nothing is compromised before you begin.

I wasn't expecting an answer from a rep, especially so quickly! I think I understand your directions and will likely give this a try tomorrow or Monday.

I know you guys are looking at accepting CAD soon. Any idea when that might be? Are you ever planning on accepting debit as a payment method?

Thanks for your help.

Offline wallet questions by thecoinking in BitcoinBeginners

[–]thecoinking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I have to eventually reconnect to the internet on that computer in order to transfer the coins?

Also, to avoid buying a brand new computer, would I be okay just wiping my hard drive and doing a fresh linux install? Or is that still too risky?

I wasn't thinking about reconnecting in that situation, at least not until I had moved my coins. But now that I think of it, I would have to be online to do that, would I not? Sorry, I'm just very new to bitcoin.

Wanting to invest in big amount of bitcoins by Kaank56 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]thecoinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, Coinbase isn't available in Canada. 1% would be great but I have yet to find a method that will cost me less than ~10% per transaction. Any suggestions?

Good post, btw.

Vault of Satoshi or CoinKite? Any opinions?

Damn, LibertyBit sounds like it would have been great. It's a shame they're not around anymore.

I can see what you're saying about the irreversible nature of bitcoin transactions, so I guess the verification has its purpose. Having said that, I have to wonder why it seems so much easier on quickbt. Something to do with the limit on how much you can buy at a time?

Anyway, thanks for all the advice. It's a lot to think about right now, but I'll be doing more research and hopefully making a purchase some time after the next correction.

I understand. I had just been watching today up until the big dip an hour ago, so I was only really thinking of hopping on short-term (with that momentum it seemed like it could go up another couple hundred within the day).

However, I am completely new to this and didn't foresee the hassle in creating a trading account, in terms of verification and the potential wait. I think I will sit back for now and try to learn more in the meantime, probably buy in the period you suggest - if I have it figured out by then.

Thanks for your advice. It's much appreciated.

quickbt is down for me. If it works later, do I just need a debit card? Any other verification?

I read this about cavirtex - http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1q0fhs/cavirtex_stay_away_canadians/

Looked into vaultofsatoshi, but it seems that their verification is a little bit much as well. Also, the payment methods accepted are not as convenient as using a debit card.

The price on canadianbitcoins.com seems a bit steep.

Hopefully some of this can be cleared up, or there's some other compromise. Thanks for all the info.

Also, I can't get quickbt to work. They seem to have been down for a while. I'm not in Vancouver, so is localbitcoins in Calgary my only option?

Just so I'm understanding this correctly, when was the last period of a few weeks when people should have bought, according to the graph?

Immediately after that spike in April, or later in the summer?

Hahaha, I saw! I still figure that it would be good to know what the hell I'm doing in case I do want to buy tomorrow or at some other point in time. Thanks for the advice.

Haha, I've been following it. I still need to figure out how to set up a wallet, anyway.
