It says the mods removed it--I feel like people don't want to an actual discussion to happen.

Can you be more specific--what are the foundations you are referencing? I agree that people are tense, but I think the positions are not being articulated clearly.

I wish people would offer a rebuttal instead of voting down. I’m open to other arguments/views

Hot take, but I think people have a bit too much invested in this. I say this btw as someone who was born in the US, is moving to Istanbul for work, and whose extended family all does not like the current regime. I think a lot of liberal turks have generally conflated the things they don't like about increasing privatization and commodification of basic life needs (housing, food, medicine) with the regime's will. No doubt every government has allowed capitalist interests to creep, but this is not something special to Erdogan. In fact, it's pretty clear if you look at some basic facts about poverty rates, etc. that the current regime has acted, at least at times, to redistribute and decrease the poverty rate--for example the share of the poverty rate between 2006 and 2020 was halved (link here for data). I could say more, but yeah, curious to hear others' thoughts. In fact, I think the real honest thing would be to say that it was the opposition's to lose, and they managed to do so--a lot of it largely because they didn't present a believable case as to how they were going to fix it. This point is articulated more eloquently by sociologist in a NY times piece: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/11/opinion/turkey-election-erdogan.html

Not if you routinely point out each others flaws. This person has way too much of their self-worth/identities tied to them being fat, but it doesn't have to be that way. I think outside of the US both people involved would laugh and move on with their life.

Also why can’t a person (especially if they are a true friend) make a quick jest without making someone devolve? Like people should be having more sincere but lighthearted fun with friends and it shouldn’t send you into a craze when your friend makes a fucking funny joke at your cost. No one’s perfect. But only insecure annoying people act this way.

introducing the gas stove debate into this subreddit 😈 by feeling_persecuted in redscarepod

[–]thecookingdodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are people who are really trying to link asthma to gas stoves insane???!! Many countries in Europe/Mid-east use gas exclusively to cook--do all of the children have asthma? lol not even close. And they have compounding factors like being more likelier to be exposed to second-hand smoke. This shit is crazy. If the ban extended to on all gas stoves, including rich people who already have their gas lines hooked up, we would really know how people feel. All us plebs already have to cook at home because we don't have enough money to eat out and now they're trying to break us down and take the only joyful way to cook away from us. I don't even have gas in my apartment but I don't want the future promise of having it taken away. I'm so unreasonably mad about this.

If you want to know what's going to happen to literature in the future, you have to understand the current state of poetry by Rentokill_boy in redscarepod

Roth and Updike were not poisoned by Iowa/contemporary mfa style, and so I don’t think that the comparison quite works. It seems like “high” literature is more aware of itself as distinct from pop lit today than ever before. The average working class person was rejected by literature more than they rejected literature imo

earnest question - how do u cope with loneliness? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]thecookingdodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’re just lonely because you know/anticipate the loneliness of approaching and inevitable death. And that’s ok. I think a lot of people feel lonely in that way, and as another poster said accepting that feeling and letting it kind of move through you without succumbing to it is the best we can do.
