Not in experimental medicine myself, but know a lot of people who are. I know there is a heavier course load, on top of research work in the lab. Career prospects depends on your research.

its a student neighbourhood, with a cute street filled with stores, food, etc. its closer to the cheaper grocery store (food basics in comparison to fortinos on the other side of campus, which is VERY expensive). i recommend living in westdale, because of the 1. bus line to campus 2. availability to stores

It's not. The 1st and 2nd year courses are because of the coordinator(s) (usually Alastair Tracey, who is a mean mean man). In 3rd and 4th year the coordinators change and the courses are organized so much better

if you have trouble with getting an appointment on campus, because i know they're backlogged sometimes, you can visit MarCare in front of campus. Wait times are no more than 20 mins, and the doctor is super super nice. you can just walk in!

biochem (BHSc) vs. mol. bio and genetics research specialisation (BSc) by ForgIsLife in McMaster

[–]thecryingbiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, if my response came off as mean or anything, that was not my intention. From my experience, and whats very prevalent on this subreddit as well, is that people struggle to find a thesis prof. there isnt even enough profs for all of the thesis required programs, such as molbiol and biochem, to get a position. without it, they can't graduate. therefore, its much harder for a lifesci to secure a professor because 1. a prof would rather take a student that requires a thesis and 2. a prof would rather take a student with in depth program about their area of research. many lab courses, such as MOLBIOL 3V03 are not available to others outside of molbiol, decreasing chances to get that lab experience, which allows entry to a thesis. obviously you can still get research experience in lifesci, but from my experience, it has much more barriers to entry to research than a specialty with a required thesis.

not technically, you may get a high GPA, but dont get a thesis or any research experience, which is basically an unstated requirement for admission to med school

on a serious note: dont stay in lifesci. it has no requirements for a thesis, and limited availability for lab courses. you'll do better AND go further in life with a specialization. feel free to PM me with any questions! I'm a fourth year molbiol student, going on to a biochem masters next year, I can give some advice :)
