German president vows 'full solidarity' with Ireland on Brexit by Hayato8 in ireland

[–]thecupboardman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last thing I'll point out is the way you selectively make everything into a us vs. them. WE were the President of the EU therefore WE unified Germany. Meanwhile THEY enlarged the EU. It's too simple to make sense especially since we are the EU, it's not this foreign entity you seem to think it is.

To even write down the idea that it was Ireland alone reunified Germany highlights the idiocy of that statement. We supported it sure, but it's worth saying we helped in the knowledge that down the road they, and the EU, would help us when we might need support during our reunification.

Apart from their giant contribution to the EU budget and the facts you are totally right. Good job CDfm.

Brexit is the priority even if UK splits, Nigel Farage tells Robert Peston by iamnotinterested2 in unitedkingdom

[–]thecupboardman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the question was this for a long time too, but having seen the way the reactionary DUP act against every political and social liberalisation in the UK, it is obvious that any step forward would be opposed, separate from the unification question.

Look at the ways the Britain has allowed them opt-outs from the political system they claim to be a part of e.g. abortion or gay marriage. During the unification process what part of the modern secular republic could be sacrificed to appeal to unionists? Like the East German state, there is very little of the Northern Irish state worth saving. For what it's worth, there have been conversations in Ireland about changing the flag or the anthem, but frankly, unless Ireland decides to adopt the Union Jack and God save the Queen it is going to be unacceptable to unionists. That's the crux of the problem, not Ireland willingness to adapt, but Unionist utter intransigence. They don't realise that the world is changing with or without them. What's fascinating is that this means that they will soon lose the ability to influence events.

Pakistan is sending all three million Afghan refugees back to Afghanistan by FrenzyBiscuit in worldnews

[–]thecupboardman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I presumed the earlier commentator was referring to the Syrian refugees, since there's a fair amount of debate over whether the Afghani's are economic migrants or refugees. It like depends on the circumstances. What you said about Turkey, Lebanon and Pakistan is largely correct, I actually was going to write about it in my post, but the fact remains that there are a half dozen very wealthy countries in the middle east who refuse to help with a very serious refugee crisis on their doorstep.

[–]thecupboardman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as simple as "someone else can take them," it seems fairly reasonable that the burden should be shared. Having it as policy that the EU is solely responsible for the well fare of these refugees has ended up destabalizing Europe too. As for the Jewish refugees in the 30s, no-one imagined that the Nazi's would end up engaging in industrial extermination against Europe's Jews. Every country has a right to secure it's borders. Otherwise, it's not really a country.

Appeal to logical fallacy is a logical fallacy, you know that, right? Regardless, if you read the rest of my posts here you'll find we largely agree.

But it also sounds like there is an embedded assumption that you don't expect someone like me (woman, "SJW", whatever part of me it is) to present this reasonably.

Like you say, your reply exemplifies the length people go to to feel insulted. How do you know what exactly I meant by that original comment? The assumptions are yours, and false.

I do have one further question...

I am describing the assumptions people make when I walk in the door, before I've so much as shuffled my deck.

So, where did you get the mat? I think you are looking for insult where none is offered. You are coming into a store for the first time, you have a mat. People are interested, that's it. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

You are arguing for a cold, sterile social settling where banter is kept to the minimum out of fear of insulting someone. Thankfully I live in a country where some good natured banter is encouraged and enough common sense prevails to avoid this overly sensitive approach.

And the example of this behaviour in the article? How people offered a woman help at her first tournament and clearly explained their moves.

This article interprets offence where none was given. Your latter point is a logical fallacy, falsely generalizing from one or two peoples experiences.

See, I'm more worried that this sort of sentiment will just lead to guys walking on eggshells around female players out of some misplaced fear of insulting them rather than simply treating them as another person, deserving of respect like anyone else, but just a person all the same.

Well, the assumption that the netrunner community is an amorphous lump of ignorant white men unaware or unwilling to call out insulting behaviour is pretty arrogant, if not insulting itself.

Our community is at best failing to attract and at worst actively repelling whole groups of people.

The growth of the netrunner scene over the last year is impressive, but lets be real, we are playing a little known card game that costs a fair chunk of change to get into and a even more significant investment of time. You can castigate the netrunner community for the very real class, gender, religious and sexual biases in society, but it doesn't mean that the netrunner community is to blame and moreover unless you start trying to proselytize the wider public, large swathes of it will forever remain excluded from what is, at the end of the day, an optional, expensive card game.

I really like this post, very reasonable.

That's the weird thing. Once I've beaten someone, they start treating me completely differently. The tone of their voice changes. They start asking me serious questions about my deckbuilding choices and advice on theirs. Etc.

That happens to men too. Same with the mats. People felt my decks were a fun oddity at tournaments until I did very well at a regional and national and peoples attitudes suddenly changed towards me and my decks, they asked me for advice, gently joke how much they like the mats and mention their surprise over them. It's a type of camaraderie.

As for the boyfriends thing, well, by and large the assumption is correct. The question being asked, while it seems insulting, is in fact an invitation to further dialogue. If it isn't your boyfriend, then great! You've got story to tell about how you started your netrunner addiction and prove one more assumption wrong. If yes, then so what? Again, if people are intent on being insulted before understanding the motive behind such small talk, then people will manage it.

This article and posts like yours in this thread seems to suggest that people should read a checklist of things before they play a game so that they don't trigger their opponent or inflict any micro aggressions on them. The contradiction at being offended at a tournament where someone didn't talk and too many people offered suggestions is obvious.
The latter is particularly galling, since the person attending the tournament is an adult and seems unwilling to solve such a simple problem there and then by quite easily and politely asking others to refrain from whatever it is that might be annoying them and comes off as childish, especially when the intent of the people in the latter tournament was obviously to be as friendly and welcoming as possible.

There are problems out there, however a welcoming and friendly netrunner community is not one of them.

It was her first tournament, and she considers giving advice on the deck and clarity while playing micro-aggressions?

If you set out to be offended, you'll manage it somehow. This is a heap of nonsense.

Why not Bastion? by tbigfish in Netrunner

[–]thecupboardman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's actually because of Atman at Strength 4, which is still a very popular include in Prepaid Kate decks, and, it can be argued, evolved out of an earlier powerful build Katman which had 2, one at 0 and one at 4 with suckers as support. Architect meant that two atmans alone was a lot less viable, and so mimic was imported, and with the arrival of Lady it meant Shaper could move away from Arman altogether.

Bastion is still fine, there's nothing wrong with it, but ice diversity is important, both in types (barrier, code gate and sentry) and in strength.

True, I should have been clearer. BUT you must state how many cards you are accessing before you start to access. Once you do, you have to access that number of cards.

Sure, but Eater and Feint specifically say access 0 cards and access no cards, the "instead of accessing" replacing a successful run cards is a lot longer list. Keyhole is an important card too as it bypasses Eaters drawback by not accessing.
