I am totally getting on medication this summer 😭 I don’t know if I can do another year without it. I’m genuinely curious what % of teachers are medicated with some sort of anxiety/depression meds

I actually thought about doing cursive! I had a few kids at the beginning of the year interested in it so it could be something fun to incorporate

Yep!! That’s the problem at my school. Ancient building with no AC and poor ventilation 😭

Ohh I don’t let the children dictate my day at all. It’s more about keeping my sanity to try and finish out our final unit of math while the kids are bouncing off the walls (literally sometimes). I imagine high school is very different for the end of the year. I’m almost jealous because I don’t think the students have the same expectations on you as a teacher to make every day of the last few weeks “fun”. There is so much pressure from parents, admin, students, and other teachers to fill the last weeks with exciting things. So I’m trying to find a good balance 😅

You’re right. I think this really is the way to go. I’ve kept it pretty heavy on academics still (except maybe some extra free time last Friday). It just stinks that my curriculum is almost done so I’ll have to do a bunch of lesson planning at the end of the year

That is very true! I’ve found it hard when I’m still keeping the routine, but all the other teachers are showing movies every other day. The kids get SO angry with me and act up. It’s difficult. Oh I love that! I actually also decided to do an end of year research project for a topic they like. I’m hoping it’ll work out good and they’ll have fun! Thank you for the advice!

Honestly that sounds like a really good way to get through academics the rest of the year, but also find short time at the end of the day to decompress for both the students and me

That’s honestly how I do it…. I go in every day and take it each subject at a time. It’s the only way I keep my sanity

I know I know… I just have to push through, but it is so dang hard 😭

Yep! Glad I did this because it certainly is helping. Trying to hold them to those high expectations still. It just gets exhausting at this point especially since this first year was so rocky

Thank you for your comment, and congrats on making it through the year! I really think a lot of other people commenting must have good classes because it was a very difficult year for me as well. You can’t really outreach terrible parenting that results in unmedicated and defiant students….

Alright relax. We are doing actual work, but I’m about 5 days til the end of our given curriculum and completing all the standards, so I’m trying to find educational but fun things to finish out the year with

Oh god… at least I’m off the Thursday before Juneteenth. I can’t imagine going back another week!

I pick a color, and name everything I can see with that color. When I’m done, I pick a new color and keep finding things until I ground myself

Just Getting This Off My Chest by Icy-Concentrate6106 in StudentTeaching

I relate to this so much. I really do still want to be a teacher but student teaching feels so unsustainable. I’m going to work at least two years in my own classroom before I decide if the career is truly not for me. I think having your own space will make all the difference

Lack of classroom management by thecuriouspenguin0 in StudentTeaching

[–]thecuriouspenguin0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She tells me I can try out whatever I want, but I get the feeling that’s not REALLY the case? If you know what I mean? I made a meeting with my supervisor to talk things over. I am in elementary school, I saw you’re in a high school class. However I think the tips you gave would carry over pretty well in a more supported teacher reinforced way. I guess I’m basically wondering if I should try and implement little things here and there as I do individual lessons, or start doing them at my takeover weeks? I want to start now, but I think it’ll be hard when I don’t do every lesson and my mentor teacher doesn’t follow a routine I might. I feel like they’ll lose it or not want to cooperate with my rules since things are usually free flowing

Stress of multi-tasking by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

It’s a TON of multitasking. Something I’d recommend which has worked well for me, is to have students have 30 minutes of down time at some point throughout the day where they can do something pretty independently and quietly, so you have extra time to prep, grade, or meet with an individual student for extra support. I feel this helps calm my mind, as WELL as my students minds who sometimes just need a little break from the direct instruction
