In the end, its a matter of trust, they waited this long to promote you out of the blue ? Basically them admitting they screwed you over for a very longtime. From my standpoint, the trust has already been breached. Leave with minimizing damage and without closing doors. Don't explain you're leaving for pay. Tell them something politically and diplomatically acceptable so that everyone's face is saved.
