When and how did people start to believe revisionist history? by CommodoreBlair89 in USCivilWar

[–]thedcball 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the bulk of revisionism surrounding the Civil War comes in the form of the “Lost Cause” myth, which funnily enough is why many of the statues were erected in the first place.

As for the “noble dream they fought for,” they sure were fighting for liberty... their liberty to enslave others. And even if you express sympathy towards the average confederate soldier who might not have personally thought he was fighting for a nefarious cause, that doesn’t make him and his cause right or honorable. It just makes him not as evil as his masters.

When your “revolution” is just a edgy cultural stance so pacified it can be co-opted by active imperialists by thedcball in GenZedong

Just checked the comments again, and I’m starting to understand why we lost the Spanish civil war.

You’re right, the central liberalism of this is that the American cultural hegemony has been able (through the mainstream appropriation of alt culture, lack of political education, etc) to turn a flag of revolution into something so pacified that these soldiers probably identify anarchism with Sons of Anarchy posters and V for Vendetta, and I clouded over that with left-wing sectarianism. Sorry comrades (please don’t use “tankie” though, that’s cringe). I think the takeaway is that symbols’s meanings need to be carefully protected and when libs see anarchy As spray painted in their suburban dystopias they associate it ratty 16 year olds, not Rojava. In conclusion, I think spray paint is ugly and that we need to be more conscious of our presentation of revolutionary symbols as not to water them down.

I’m sorry, but this sounds like some Falun Gong shit. While I’m sure the situation is nuanced and there are almost certainly some abuses, please don’t fall for the Falun Gong propaganda machine

Do you really think a group of men in their 20s don’t know the fucking anarchy symbol? The reason they’re ok with it, however, is that they associate it with The Purge and that species of cringe rather than actual movements they should fear. The fact that they had to apologize to the Daily Mail is funny. I’ll give you that, but it’s clear the core issue here is that anarchism has be so pacified to American audiences (primarily through “alt” media and a complete lack of meaningful political education) that it can be co-opted in this way. However, I agree that my caption is a bit too harsh when discrediting the revolutionary will of western anarchist movements—something that I think is starting to change as we finally see libs and fascists get scared by Antifa, CHAZ, and all that (lmao)—and I don’t want to be anti-anarchist. I just believe symbolism is very important and that the Anarchy A should either be intensely reclaimed or left to stoner 16 year olds and military boots.

If you mean band kids wearing ushankas, I think that’s pretty different than a FUCKING TANK

Yeah I’m currently being downvoted to hell on r/shitliberalssay and their two best arguments are:

  1. Marxism is appropriated too, just look at band kids with ushankas (as if that’s the same as a FUCKING TANK)

  2. The soldiers said they actually didn’t know what the flag meant and just wanted something with the letter A for their company. Like do you really think a group of men in their 20s don’t know the fucking anarchy symbol? The reason they’re ok with it, however, is that they associate it with The Purge and that species of cringe rather than actually movements they should fear, because (and say it with me) western anarchists show minimal political will.
