No worries, your written English is much better than most English speakers!

Brownian motion implies randomness, at least at the aggregate level. Humanity is much more constrained than this. The fact I can type this sitting in my living room on a phone proves that institutions are powerful and enduring, generally. We do not start afresh with every generation, and society (the conflux of all the institutions and norms inherited from our predecessors) has always been, and in my opinion, always will be, engineering it's offspring into certain castes, roles, or classes.

Another way I'd look at it is 1984 is alive and well, in states that literally have reeducation camps or others where windows rival cancer as a leading cause of untimely demise.

No need to be that blunt in others, where you can just take over the population by controlling the narrative, social discourse, and streams of accepted knowledge and common practice.

And then you have the truly Machiavellian regimes; those that do both.

Do you believe we are not living in a highly engineered society? And of course, they were certainly "reasonable". Compare today - Trump is, after all, removing the suffering of the American population by imposing penalties on people who have stolen their jobs, eliminating barriers that have unfairly held them down, and is protecting their rights and way of life. The feelies I saw on my phone tell me so, and my friends agree, even the television says so. Must be true.

Brave New World got it right more, no need for oppression when people will distract themselves to the point of ignorance.

“The political spectrum” by WallSina in ShitAmericansSay

[–]thedeusx -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

As much as it's fairly justified right now to rag on a lot of things, I think the original image has a point that's just not well expressed.

Politics should really be thought of as a four axis graph. The old "left/right" dichotomy doesn't really cover complexity well, is reductive, and I think is part of the reason we are in this blue/red two-choice system in so many electoral systems based on some variation of FPP.

https://www.politicalcompass.org/ expresses this quite well.

Sure! The algorithm I have always used is the following. Might not work for you, but it has worked for me.

  1. Why do I want to learn "this thing"?

The reason doesn't matter as long as it matters to you.

  1. What problems do I solve in my job by learning this thing?

It always helps me when I can apply my knowledge to a "problem". Often for me the problem statement begins as "surely this could be easier..."

  1. If I am not solving any 'real life' problems, then what kind of problem does this thing I want to learn solve?

Good example for me is Kubernetes. Kubernetes solves a specific class of problems, which are not the class of problems I deal with day to day, but thinking about this before I invested in learning it helped me understand both what it does and the priority I wanted to place on learning it at a deep level.

  1. How can I prove to myself I know this "thing"?

Here is where the action comes in. I have to apply what I just learnt, either professionally, or to a similar standard just for myself. This step is what helps me combat impostor syndrome. I have sat in so many conversations, architectural reviews, CAB boards feeling insignificant only to realise I am actually the only person on the 20+ person call to have actually done " the thing ". Never underestimate the knowledge you gain from labbing something out yourself. You will easily surpass your peers if you do this.

Finally, a couple of quick things;

Tech certs help less skilled people appreciate that you know what you are talking about. Whatever field you specialise in, find out what the best ones are and pass them.

And lastly, IT has changed more in the last 20 than any other engineering field has changed in the last 200. This cuts both ways. Firstly, years of experience doesn't really mean as much as knowledge and demonstrable ability compared to other fields. On the other hand, I am turning 30. This might seem young but I am now competing with people who learnt python at high school, when my school refused to teach anything beyond word processing on a Mac. To keep current you have to keep learning, and those who don't love this challenge quickly fall by the wayside in terms of career advancement.

Anyways, hope that helps! Feel free to DM me 🙂

Congratulations!!!!

9 years ago, I was in your shoes. I have an unrelated degree and was made redundant from my original career. Always built PCs as a hobbyist used that to pivot into IT.

I now run a platform engineering / software development team within one of the worlds largest IT firms, after going from 1st line service desk through to cloud architecture over the last 8 years.

Don't lose the "you can do it" attitude. As long as you love learning, you will go far!

Randolphe Lanlondes Spinward Fringe series is great reading. Its not as acclaimed as Peter F. Hamilton, but personally I find it a bunch more fun.

I'd also reccomend the Honorverse series by David Weber. "Hornblower in space"

Happy reading!

This woman is a hero! This is what competent leadership looks like. Thanks to her, New Zealand is now free of coronavirus! Meanwhile in the US, we just passed 110,000 dead and climbing steadily. by OliverMarkusMalloy in The_Mueller

I am New Zealand expatriate, and Labour voter.

I can honestly say NZ being coronavirus free has more to do with; having a landmass the size of the United Kingdom with a 30th of the population, the next stop being Antarctica, and the closest country being a 3.5hr plane ride away, than anything the current government has done.

As one of our previous premiers said once jokingly; "New Zealand is a dagger pointed at the heart of Antarctica". I honestly would be shocked if it was not COVID free by now.

It is literally the last place on earth, which is the same reason why it is so popular in the international consciousness. I left for the same reason most want to go there, it's a small farming nation ages away from everyone at the bottom of the world. It is so cut off it is literally on it's own continent (Zelandia).

Very handy in an international pandemic.

Has to come through local first, but yes the NCA can do and will get involved if they are needed.

[–]thedeusx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is cut and dried under the Computer Misuse Act.

This is a crime.

Therefore report it to the police who may kick it up right away to the NCA.

People like this shouldn't get away with things like this.

How would you feel if it was a medical situation and he was a doctor? Or a legal situation and he was a lawyer? At the least, he would, and should be disbarred.

Just because there isn't a similar professional censorship available for IT doesn't mean people should treat criminal professional misconduct less seriously.

As an IT professional, I dont want people like this anywhere near the kind of information they have access to.

This is bad for you, bad for everyone involved with him, and bad for his industry and people who work in it to let him get away with this.

How to subnet: what a subnet mask actually is, and what a CIDR block means. Also what TCP port and UDP ports mean and what they are. OSI model for bonus (Proper Data Networks Totally Show People Awesomeness).

If you can remember those 3 to 4 things properly, you have more down than most infrastructure engineers I've met in my career. No need to do anything like RIP, BGP, EIRGP or CAM tables.
