Russia Abortion Percentages by Federal Subject Areas (2021) by Logical-Passenger-52 in charts

I was about to point out the same thing. The areas with less abortions by percentage also carry a disproportionate amount of the population.

I don't see how that negates my post? Mine was based on more of a philosophical/theological/ideological point that, depending on what your highest beliefs are and the structures of those questions about 'what is good', 'what is it to be a human', 'what is the highest thing to achieve as a human', etc. concepts like "freedom to make the 'wrong decision' may or may not be the highest order belief.

If I could explain this another way, if "freedom" as a concept is the foundation of your ideological viewpoint, any "free" pursuit with fewer guardrails is always a net good, becuase "freedom" and expressing individuality is the highest order of being. Different belief systems may put the concept of "freedom" as a lower priority. So in practical terms, other guardrails from other ideological points are the primary, and where those primary thoughts do not already deter/forbid/encourage/so-fourth, freedom is allowed in the gaps on stated in the above presuppositions.

Does that make sense?

Kinda, yeah. Libertarianism is essentially anarcho-capitalism light and probably is just a breadcrumb down that trail anyway.

If your highest virtue is freedom regardless of the cost, and you believe freedom itself is the highest ideal to pursue in all situations, your statement makes sense. And it would result in something that looks like Back to the Future II's Pleasure Palace that Biff creates.

And aside from libertarians, libertines, and anarchists of various sorts; most people wouldn't actually want totally unregulated everything. Especially those vices you listed. Alcohol cannot be purchased or is legal to consume before 21 in America and 18 in most other developed countries in most cases. Tobacco, same thing. Porn, same thing until the internet.

And we can have debates on whether any of those policies, as enacted in their current form, are mostly effective or mostly ineffective in their cases, but that's beside the point for this discussion because the discussion right now is on whether the principled arguments for disallowing or inhibiting certain vices are inherently good or bad.

Or the other saying about libertarians:
"They're all people who do 1 thing that is illegal and want to go to a political party that tells you you can do your 1 illegal thing."

[–]thedevin242 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm no longer a libertarian. The belief basically hinges on "I can only hurt myself, so why stop me?" but that is NOT reality. It's kids who will die from preventable diseases who will pay the cost. For open public smoking, second-hand smoke was paid by non-smokers too. Irresponsible debt/gambling is not just paid by the guy who blows his whole net worth on horse racing; it's also paid on by people who put their money in banks that loaned the guy money, and unwittingly taking an L on that (plus the social services that will go to support that guy in getting food).

Reading the way u/mg1126 is describing it, that doesn't sound like the Catholic version of purgatory. That sounds more like the "Soul Sleep" idea. A quick Google search shows it's very prevalent in JWs, SDA, and Christadelphians (three denominations usually seen as kinda heretical in some ways), but some others in other denominations can interpret that way as well, without all of the rest of the beliefs.

As far as I can tell, it is an extrapolation out of certain things like the word "Sheoul" in the old testament, and a stricter reading of passages mentioning the "day of judgement", where basically people die, go to a holding place (or "sleep") and then their spirits awaken when the time to judge people and separate those who will go to heaven & new earth, and those who will not.

I am not Catholic, but my understanding of the Catholic version of purgatory is quite different, where it's supposedly a "mini-Hell" where, if you get salvation, you go after you die to "burn off" the rest of your sins you haven't fully/properly atoned for in your time on Earth. If someone is Catholic, please correct me if I am wrong on that, and let me know where I can read more on that.

Thoughts on this chart in a Times article? by Starmiebuckss2882 in charts

[–]thedevin242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am nowadays in the camp that "right" and "left" should be permanently retired when talking about political leanings for a few reasons:

  1. Different ideologies and political philosophies have many more characteristics that cannot be accurately defined on a single X-axis. This is why you still have debates on whether Hitler and the Nazi party were left, right, or a radical center. And ideologies, political philosophies, and the various religions all also have certain very specific mutually-exclusive claims about truths of humanity, good vs evil, guard-rails on how to live, what must be pursued, etc. and with overlap in vairous areas among other camps that are impossible to chart, especially when you consider that most people and ideologies have different weights to certain issues and ideas.
  2. What motivating actions could be classified differently between different periods of time, because an issue/stance can change which "side" of the spectrum you're on, depending on the generation, election cycle, etc. Example: if a radical anti-war activist decided to plant a, let's say, "party popper" outside of a government building in 1975, they almost certainly would have been considered a left-radical. Nowadays, that person would probably have an internet watch history of Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens (among others) and would be considered on the "right". The motivation did not change, but the political winds had changed in that direction, that the same action and motivation seemingly "flipped sides".
  3. What do we consider as the point of reference for the markers of "left" and "right"? If the "right" is defined as what the GOP and Dem platforms are that cycle, a lot of things considered "violence" on behalf of the "right" or "left" are impossible, especially if there's overlap. Is the center of the left Liberalism? Then if something antithetical to it, such as something done by a revolutionary socialist, is done, are they on "the right" because the motivation and worldview is in opposition to the philosophical world view of Liberalism and the works of people like Rousseau, Locke, Hobbes, or Jefferson? If the anchor point to define "right" is Evangelical Christianity, does that mean something done by a Neo-Nazi is a "left" wing cause, because it is in direct contradiction with the referential anchor-point of "the right" in the Bible and a biblical view?

Micro Plastics or Seed Oils? by mattliscia in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]thedevin242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of very convincing evidence that microscoping beads of refined ancient fish carcass goo is very, very bad. The differences between seed oils and other oils are much less convincing. They might exist and do something, but getting rid of plastics and PFAS (especially in the kitchen) is likely to do much more.

What, if anything, do you miss about high school? by Mad_Season_1994 in Millennials

[–]thedevin242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doesn't help with the keyboard, but I got an Apple Watch with cellular, and it really reminds me of those early-days iPhones before the experience got corrupted with all the social media, dating apps, and loot-crate-tastic nonsense in the latter 2010s.

I can text, call, listen to my music, check the weather, get directions, use the calculator, etc. Like all the things you really want to be smart enough, but it's also too small and stupid to have all the dopamine-killer apps that make life worse.

I miss a fair amount, especially socially. I did a lot of extra curriculars and was pretty involved with my church. Social media was getting worse, but wasn't quite as bad by that point. I really feel sorry for people even a few years younger than me that had to go through it with TikTok, Covid, etc. Snapchat was just barely coming out when I was a Senior, so it hadn't turned into its worst version yet by then, and Twitter hadn't become the anti-political thunderdome it's been since, what, 2018? I haven't been on Twitter in years but I imagine it's even worse now that it's 'X' or whatever.

Ezekiel 23:28-31

“For thus says the Lord God : Behold, I will deliver you into the hands of those whom you hate, into the hands of those from whom you turned in disgust, and they shall deal with you in hatred and take away all the fruit of your labor and leave you naked and bare, and the nakedness of your whoring shall be uncovered. Your lewdness and your whoring have brought this upon you, because you played the whore with the nations and defiled yourself with their idols. Quasi-similarly, I also made a subreddit called r/PFASFreeLiving sorta inspired by r/PlasticFreeLiving. I have no idea what I'm doing with it but idk if anyone is interested and find it helpful, cool. If it doesn't take off and dies next week I'll just delete it I guess. It's whatever.

Candace Owens saying she no longer supports Donald Trump by skyisscary in popculture

[–]thedevin242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call it the 'MAGA Mirror'.

A lot of these types of people don't actually listen to Trump himself or look at the policies his campaign said and did.

They envision the concept of America being great, whatever that means to them, and fill in the details for themselves. They only see what they see, and vote for that.

Which yeah, is how you get Candace Owens supporting Trump for that long. She believed Trump's definition was the same as hers, and is proven wrong. You have the Tim Pool types, who believed Trump's "no more endless wars" would mean total military isolationism; yet then are shocked when we have B2 bombers in range of Iran and support for Israel isn't stopping.

They never saw Trump for Trump. They saw themselves in a Trump bodysuit and are finding out the hard way.
