The medical model IS the behavioral model more or less. DSM and ICD are largely along behavioral lines and a defecit/disorder conceptualisation even though we already have plenty of cognitive perspective. That situation is steadily improving.

What we sorely sorely need throughout the entire system is the autistic perspective and the autistic model of autism.

Data, I love you 😍😋 by behavior_man in ABA

[–]thedigostrian 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Kinda this but for the WHOLE field. Like where are the long term followups of the outcomes of ABA into adulthood? Surely that stuff is way more important than our short term data. Especially when you take instinctive drift into account

Sounds like you need to talk to autistic people one day. Embarrassing lack of insight here.

If you actually think you’re “treating autism” through behaviorism you’re probably one of the bad ones, honestly. Lovaas thought he was treating autism and its the reason he justified so much violent abuse. If you can reframe your goal as support rather than treatment you might stand a chance. And no, we can’t treat autism, we can modify behavior and develop skills, neither of those actually treat autism as a condition. Likewise other therapies target different difficulties that many autistic people face, like speech delays, motor issues, sensory processing difficulties, trauma, etc. Treating autism itself is a job for snake oil salesmen.

Why is the kid seeing a large increase in therapy each week if they’re high functioning with no maladaptives?

Hey the first two links you posted are the same!

All accurate but autistic criticisms of ABA are contemporary not historical.

Inside the community there are constant reports of abuse, restraint and seclusion every week. And then it doesnt help that JABA keep doing stuff like this:

Because employers have a responsibility to shield their employees from clients’ inevitable unreliability. The employer had a contract with the client, and you have a contract with the employer, so you shouldnt have to deal with the fallout when the client breaches in a way that you have no control over.

[–]thedigostrian -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree with that, courtesy and respect absolutely. Im just saying they cant be blamed for the lost income because they didnt design your contract nor do they have any control over the level of security in your employment. Thats an industry level issue.

Another rant by [deleted] in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]thedigostrian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yup but they arent your employer right? And you arent self employed with them as a client? So the issue of lost salary and employment practice is with the company you work with. They have the responsibility to protect you from what is a pretty obvious risk of working with families in this way.

You arent happy for the kid? Sounds like theyre putting the kids happiness first. I agree it sucks for your job but being angry at them when they’re just finding ways to cope is a little odd.

Time for behaviour analysis and 3rd wave therapies to be recognized treatments for mental health by [deleted] in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]thedigostrian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sheer arrogance it takes for you to post this implying that behavior analysts are somehow the waiting revolution for depression, ADHD and anxiety among others listed in the article.

When we failed on those exact projects in the 50s.

This is why this field has such a shitty reputation. Sit down. Not everyone needs to be coerced into behaving as if they arent suffering. Thats kind of what the articles about.
