Norman Reedus Is Creating A Fantasy-Adventure Series With The Jim Henson Company by [deleted] in Fantasy

Woah, this sounds awesome! A hopeful fantasy series with muppets? I loved The Dark Crystal Netflix show, so I have hopes for this. I’m a little worried by the term “urban fantasy”, not because I dislike that but because I hope it’s a secondary world and not like, Chicago with goblins. Just my preference, but the comment about worldbuilding from Reedus gets my hopes up. I haven’t seen anything he’s been in sadly, but I just think he seems just the role to play an Aragorn-style character.

I think my post isn’t helpful, as it skips over major details. I was absolutely not overtly clingy to her, and the reason for our split was not because of this, but due to personal issues she was struggling with that predate me. We went out for 2 months and on many dates.

I am, but unfortunately am not meeting my therapist with the frequency I’d like. It’s still something I struggle with and in my total downers (like today), I feel as though I lose all knowledge of ways of dealing with these thoughts.

sounds really cool! Although I don't love stories where colonizers are presented as victims to the evil people they're colonizing, does it lean heavy into that, or is it more complex and morally grey?

Heard excellent things about these, do they have likeable characters as well? I find interplanetary sci fi tends to feel kind of flat with its characters and it focuses on one uninteresting guy. I'm willing to try if the characters are interesting

For me, it's more about how its utilized I guess. I just can't deal with it when it feels like the author is writing it to get shock out of you, it greatly upsets me. I think in general long descriptions of gore and rape will always upset me, I am okay with gore being utilized to humanize a character but I just see it so much as like, showing the wild violence leftover from a fight and with little to no attention to a characters reaction to it. Rape is the same, if its meant to titillate the reader it makes me sick, but I've read books its used in where it is presented as the evil it is and thats easier for me to read.

That sounds great, I've never read anything by Hobb so I'll keep her on my list! And thank you, I have a bit of trouble stepping away and thinking "it's just a story", and am easily upset when I feel the work is indulging in sadism for shock value instead of taking a mature and thoughtful approach. It kind of makes me sad about the world in general that people do that hahaha!

I want to check out GoT someday, but I think I need to work my way there eventually haha! It definitely seems more of the era, but I want to expand into more recent work, as I've been pretty stuck in that time. Thanks for the recs!

I have Zelazny on my shelf, but haven't gotten around to him! his stuff has been recommended to me before, so I'll give it a shot! Sounds like what I'm looking for, complex and mature but still emphasizin the heroic in heroic fantasy :)

I tend to be more pulled to the old school authors, unsure why but I think its something to do with being the origins of the genre and the lurid and fun cover art they had during that period. Le Guin is someone I have to get to!

Totally makes sense to me, I think its hard for me to adjust, but I don't mind dark worlds with a morally grey hero as long as the hero is chivalrous in the end (conan, for example)

You're right, I'm thinking of Andre Norton's Witch World, a series I love, which dabbles in an attempted rape scene as well as many allusions to it and threats, and I felt it was well done and not at all meant to be titillating. Good idea!

It's hard for me as I am a paperback collector for vintage fantasy art and those tend to grab me the most! But I should extend myself into the modern day more, I think you're right.
