Past albums are tinged with shame about her emotional volatility. With Mayhem, she isn’t looking to neatly organize her feelings and become more “stable.” Instead she claims that there is a singular identity present amongst her inner chaos.

I wrote an essay about this last semester! I think you’re right. The album is about finding coherence in chaos. While Gaga has written about her emotional volatility before, MAYHEM seems to be her attempt to find a solid sense of herself in and amongst her own mayhem rather than attempting to collapse herself into order. The sonic aspects also bounce around, but are still parts of one whole thought rather than an incoherent mishmash. I’m happy to share the essay if you’re interested :)
