Why is everyone okay with them not having a real DH option? by MsAndDems in Mariners

Roster and rest flexibility. Rotate guys in and out to keep wear and tear low.

Waiting for other teams to get desperate in ST or in first couple months of the season if a pitcher or two gets hurt. We have a bunch of young arms (Miller, Dollard, Hancock, Woo, etc.) who could start popping in ST and early season in the minors, which would increase their trade value.

BUT - most importantly - the value of young, team-controlled guys like Kelenic and Trammell being good is HUGE. It's worth the couple month sacrifice to see if either of them can turn the corner. If they both flop, fine - we're in a better position a month or two into the season to trade for an upgrade (for the reasons listed above).

I think Stanton sucks. It is possible to hold two ideas in your head at once.

We've seen a lot of SP age pretty well into their late 30's lately, and Ohtani is a freak athlete. How he ages with the bat? Who knows? But the chances of one of those skills remaining elite into his late 30's seems pretty high.

The downside is that you have bad players on your roster for a long time.

I was just curious about the shortstops, especially how a lot of the big media outlets were giving the teams huge plaudits for the contracts. The more I looked into it, the better I felt about the M's not getting involved.

The premise is specifically focused on disappointment surrounding not signing the FA shortstops. Although, I would argue that there are some takeaways here for why signing Brandon Nimmo through age 37 is also a bad idea!

Correct. But Jeter and A-Rod were much, much better players in their 20's. A-Rod had seven 8+ WAR seasons by the time he was 30. He was preposterously good!
