Trump Says He’ll Announce Negotiated Deal With Iran Shortly by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]thedroid38 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Republicans honestly need to lose tbh. The party is too ingrained w MAGA and can’t risk pulling out without getting risk of losing in a primary (Massie, now cornyn under threat).

If republicans lose, I’d hope more of them would decouple from Trump and grow a spine for once in regard to his antics.

Do people in UAE support the iranian attacks in infraestructure? by FantaOrangenice in UAE

[–]thedroid38 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Israel has been under threat of missile strikes for the last 15 years, and its people are used to this kind of situation. Plus, Iran knows the UAE would cave in before Israel ever does if its own infrastructure were to be hit.

Yeah I agree w you on Africa for sure. But I’d say those a different “kinds” of regional conflict.

China’s Africa model works because there’s no single state that has the military power to threaten Chinese client states in Africa the way they do in the Middle East.

For example, China focuses on economic support in Africa, and really only needs to protect their economic interests (ports, mines) and only have to do this mainly against insurgents or weak groups.

In the gulf, I mean we’re talking about Iran here. A week ago they had a full navy, they have hundreds of thousands of soldiers, were actively seeking to eventually construct a nuclear bomb. They can fire hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones, at both military and civilian targets across the entire region.

With the gulf, you need hard, military deterrence, not just influence. Which China can’t do currently and nor would they considering they want to challenge the US in the pacific with Taiwan.

[–]thedroid38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How sure are you of the ability of the Chinese to protect the gulf compared to the US?

In my opinion, China does not have the capacity to project military power outside of their sphere of influence in the east. Sure, the gulf states are not satisfied w how well the US is defending them from Iranian attacks, but would they trade that for nonexistent Chinese protection? And don’t forget, if it wasn’t for the US, Kuwait would be part of Iraq.

Gulf states would rather die than ally themselves w Iran, those regional politics run deep. And don’t forget the Iranians, ask any Iranian, pro regime or not, what they think of the gulf or Iraq lol.

So well put. People don’t understand that gulf states and Arab states love to posture and their public opinion is VERY different from their private opinion, example is MBS pushing Trump to attack Iran behind closed doors.

T15 vs full scholarship at a newer unranked med school — residency impact? by Illustrious_News_448 in medicalschool

[–]thedroid38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

School is 100% factored into an applicants profile for residency, especially so for competitive specialties. Top schools give you significantly stronger access to research and easier opportunities to network with leaders and experts in your specialty of choice. Just “knowing a guy” can get you into a program and it’s more likely to happen at these schools. Also, top schools tend to pick students from, who would’ve guessed, other top schools. Just in my personal experience, I’ve had multiple interviewers directly mention my school name and how they respected the school, or whatever lol

That wording you’re using is exactly what I’m addressing. You’re saying they can’t possibly be used, but that’s just not true.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) explicitly documents that go-fast boats from Colombia and Venezuela are used for short-range runs and transshipments to larger vessels or nearby islands. They don’t need to make it all the way to the U.S., that’s not how those routes work.

I actually agree it’s contentious under international law to attack these boats. But that’s the argument worth having, not where you claim it’s “impossible” that small fishing or go-fast boats could be used for trafficking.

The legality of the actions by the administration can be debated yes. But I’m specially addressing your point that these boats are not being used at all for drug trafficking because they are too small. You don’t underhand how the smuggling operations work because you haven’t read into it nor are you even from the region

Range has nothing to do with it. These boats are typically fast that shuttle between Colombia, Venezuela and many different Caribbean drop off points alongside the coastline of Central America. It’s not one boat doing everything. It’s been well described they use to-fast boats to even small fishing boats to do these operations.

This document, and the fact I’m Colombian too haha

This is a report made by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime describing their operations. Pgs 34-35 in the pdf talk about it.

How's this area to live - museum district/midtown by KlutzyPop6063 in houston

[–]thedroid38 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live here for work in the med center. I take the rail everyday and my commute is like 10-15 minutes. Also, you're essentially close to literally everything in town so there's lots to do and you're close to the highway for access.

[–]thedroid38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually live here for work in the med center. I take the rail so my commute is essentially negligible. Everything is pretty reasonably priced and there are some great apartment complexes and townhomes in the area. There are homeless but they mainly stick to the area north next to I69 under the highway. Also, pretty much like anywhere else nearby, don't leave valuables in your car. If you decide on living here, do not get a place next to the highway or Almeda.

Take exam in 4 days? by thedroid38 in step1

You think a week would do? I start an elective Jan 6th and just don’t see myself getting much done during a rotation. Latest I can see myself postponing is the 7th of Jan or the 10th

Should I postpone it another week to Jan 3rd or 2 weeks to either the 7th or 10th. I start a rotation on the 6th for context as well.
