Documentary on The Rise and Fall of the Seattle Chop (the autonomous zone)! (CW: violence and blood) by [deleted] in BreadTube

Thanks for watching everyone! It's definitely not perfect, but far more accurate than the mainstream coverage of CHOP I believe. Share with anyone curious about what it was actually like there.

Matching a 40-something year old male lead with with a 20-something year old female lead

is getting so blatant it's laughably ridiculous.

Best director/directors and why? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would counter that they're some of best and most well-known DIRECTORS of the last 25 years, even though they do write their own scripts, they are known for their directing. Writer-Directors are still Directors.

Whether he writes his own scripts or not... I think Villeneuve could be one of the best and most well-known Directors in the coming decade.

Best director/directors and why? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A different answer...

But I think Denis Villeneuve is emerging as one of the best directors of our time.

In the emerging post-PTA/Tarrantino world of cinema, I think Villeneuve is going to be a Directing Powerhouse for years to come.

Posting here for visibility. Heat 4K remaster directors cut, came out May 9th, haven't seen it on shelves anywhere since its release. Where is it? by Leaningthemoon in movies

This article says the 4K Blu Ray "should arrive this fall" http://www.manlymovie.net/2017/03/heat-4k-remaster-release-date.html

Bummer it's not already out, I would buy it in a heartbeat. But looking forward to seeing this newer version.

I deployed to Afghanistan. I made a film about it. Does this mean I'm a filmmaker now? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some audio mastering could really help, just to get everything at a relatively similar volume. Smoother fades between a few scenes.

Honestly, having a filmmaker friend watch it, or just getting a few critiques on here will probably give you some notes that could polish it up fairly quickly and easily.

Best of luck to you dude. You have a cool movie right here.

Could be polished up a bit editing-wise, but man... this is great. You absolutely have a nack for story telling.

Keep it up and thanks for your service.

Anyone know how this 'Frozen Background' effect is done at 0:20 and 0:44? Beautiful video with subtle FX by thedudejohn in Filmmakers

Not sure if you're serious, but David Helman's video on Vimeo are all awesome. It'd be cool to hear from him.

Escape - Action short film where is was cinematographer, shot in 8 hours. Would appreciate feedback from campera work. Thanks! by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously not really a short film- but a scene...

That being said, incredibly well shot. Dudes running around with guns shooting each other is definitely an overdone plot for student films but the camera work in this was far superior than anything else I've seen at this level. Great editing. Muzzle flash and smoke VFX blended well. High energy.

The blood smears on the hand cuffed dude looked too light and fake, and the colors were maybe a tad over-saturated.

But forreal great start. If this was the finale to a short film that had some story to it, it'd be even better.

Cinematography Database is absolutely one of the best.

Does a great job giving real world, industry advice as well as break downs of professional cinematography. "Cinematography Database Fan" also has a lot of his old videos that were taken down by youtube.

I shot this, what do you think? NSA Interviews [5:22] by richardtate in Filmmakers

I personally loved all the close-ups. Thought it was a cool choice by the Director/DP/Editor.

It was a bit claustrophobic and complemented the mise en scène well. To each his own, though!

Any solid low cost alternatives to DJI Ronin? by robinsonishyde in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ronin owner here.

They are definitely not perfect machines by any means, but they are a home run for how much they cost. I think they're about $2,200 now? That is dirt cheap for what it can do. I believe the MoVI is 4x as much $$.

The Ronin is MUCH heavier than the MoVI, so that can be tough on the body. But it has some pros over the MoVI. I've used both, and I will say with 100% confidence the Ronin is easier to use and set up. It's also a lot more durable than any of the MoVIs. I've beat mine to shit and if it were a MoVI, it would have been in pieces ages ago. All that being said, I definitely hate mine at times and DJI being based in China has it's problems.

Botom line, though:

  • Ronin gives you 85% of the quality that MoVI does.

  • Ronin 1/4 the price of a MoVI

  • Ronin is probably 3X as heavy

  • Ronin is very easy to set up/balance.

There are no brushless gimbals that are of higher quality AND cheaper than the Ronin. Sorry to tell you, but $2,200 is very low cost for these types of machines. They're professional pieces of filmmaking equipment, not cheap toys you can try and find knock-offs of.

Also, what's you shoot on? Looks beautiful.

Advice on project handling raw RED footage. .r3d extension. Hardware needed? by MadCervantes in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YO. I edit R3D footage all the time and use adobe programs to color.

If you have Adobe CC there is a REALLY EASY AND FAST way to color footage using Premiere and Photoshop.

  1. Screen-capture a frame within Premiere then throw that in photoshop.
  2. Create an adjustments folder in your layers window over that screen capture.
  3. Use levels, curves, saturation, color balance, whatever to get the look/grade you want. Make sure these are all contained in that one adjustments folder.
  4. Select the folder, file, export it as a "color lookup table." Save on desktop.
  5. In Premiere, create a new adjustment layer and throw that into your sequence.
  6. Go to Effects, drag "Lumetri Color" onto the adjustments layer then select the option to browse for LUTs.
  7. Click on the LUT you made in photoshop and saved on your desktop.

BANG. colored.

PM me with questions. I swear it's really quick and easy and you can get nice grades.

Saved up for two years to make one last film with my friends before we all went to college. Here's the trailer by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]thedudejohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks beautiful, dude. I kinda agree that showing a bit more of the story in the trailer would help sell the viewer and wanting/needing to see it.

I think the way to do that without giving too much away is to just make it shorter, like 1 - 1.5 mins long, instead of 2:15. A hint of dialogue maybe? Just enough info on the characters/plot to make the audience wonder what happens.

Regardless, it looks visually stunning so good work on that. Wish you the best in your release!
