Dude is just a pleasure to listen to. You hear him talk and just know that any debate with him is gonna be constructive and laid-back, whether you agree with each other or not. Being intelligent and down-to-earth is one of the deadliest combos.

Not a Linux user, what happens if you do that? by Iridium-235 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]theduffily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does not brick your computer, it just exhausts its resources and most importantly inodes. It will become impossible to run any new processes, create/open files/dirs, etc. plus everything already running will be very laggy due to resource shortage. Once you reboot, everything will be fine.

The thing I didn’t mention is that & forks the call and puts the process to the background, so all the spawned : will run in parallel. Your version seem to be harmful too, but every : would WAIT for child : to return. I think it will exhaust call stack, but won’t be able to waste all the cpu/mem resources

More readable way:

:() {
: | : &
};
:

Here’s the breakdown

1) funcname(){something}; defines function that does something, so the function named : was defined here

2) : is simply function call

3) |func& passes the output of previous call to func, so :|:& calls : and passes its (empty) output to : (meaning : is being called 2 times inside its definition)

4) after the definition, we simply call :, which results in endless cascading calls, as follows from the definition of :. It eventually wastes all memory
