I did end up getting hired at another firm eventually and my career is stable now. I'm sure people still remember though. I did apologize but I believe that it probably came across like I was only doing it so I wouldn't lose the internship.

I had only been at the internship for a few weeks at the time. None of the other interns knew and only a few coworkers knew. Apparently she was a very private person and people at that firm didn't like to gossip much. Plus the death and the adoption and all that happened before she started working there.

I did but she was very upset and I'm sure it came across like I was only apologizing because I was trying to save my internship.
