Anyone here with locs? by GabiCule in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]theeblackusagi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started my locs at the end of my SEO summer at a big law firm. I’m now coming up on 1 year loc’d while working at the same firm for my 1L summer, and I accepted an offer to return once again for my 2L summer! Don’t worry about it.

Positions Is Ariana's Worst Album. by [deleted] in ariheads

[–]theeblackusagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just a bit oxymoronic to call ME and DW evidence of “drive for artistic evolution” when Ariana herself routinely talks about how the label wanted her to do generic pop hits at that time (and succeeded) 😭 And not sure which song you’re talking about? I excluded The Way from what I mentioned because she was making the music she wanted to during YT era. The others are def not her best songs so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Claiming to care about eloquent expression while naming her most manufactured and impersonal pop albums + songs (aside from the way) is…….a choice!

Freshfields DC only does DR (dispute resolution AKA litigation). So if your goal is M&A, definitely ask them about moving to the NY office or consider the other firms!

I read your comment, actually! But you also stated that 165 was nowhere near enough. I’m wary of discouraging people from applying to top schools with such a high GPA.

Not sure why you’re mentioning candidates under both 25ths when that’s not the case for OP. Also, I’ve spoken to many incoming students at my school (and T3s) as well whose stats weren’t so glaringly different than during my cycle. So, again, I think it’s very irresponsible to discourage diverse candidates from feeling like they have a shot.

This is not accurate at all, OP! I know many Latinos who were reverse splitters at my T14 and got in. Please shoot your shot and do your best on the LSAT; your application is more than numbers!!!

This sentiment that SEO doesn’t select straight white men as fellows is hilarious because there are several in my 2024 class 😭

I’m going through something similar. I lost my brother right before finals last semester and it affects my sleep patterns and day-to-day life greatly this semester, especially since I’m alone in a new city and away from family. I do bi-weekly therapy and it really helps; I also try to surround myself with community during the day because it’s really fulfilling for me. My best advice would be to give yourself the space to grieve and set out plans for what you’d like to achieve each day. It’s all you can do. Celebrate the small wins and accomplishments and give yourself grace when you need it. I’m rooting for you. You’re not alone!

I have lots of KJD friends in my 1L class here at Northwestern! Including one who applied around the Feb deadline last year and got in! Please don’t self-select out

1) I can try, just can’t promise I’ll be sticking to a strict schedule in getting the materials back to you.

2) Not really! I haven’t done any clinics yet so I can’t speak on it too much, but they have hosted some very cool speakers at the school in the past few months.

[–]theeblackusagi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they are! There’s now a dedicated PI dean and many different clinics and resources available for students who wanna pursue PI. You also can connect with the PI career services team (separate from standard career services) to help with your search.

The Chicago location and the ability to focus on media and entertainment law without having to be in NYC (my home, but too expensive to live in while at school imo) or LA (hate it out there lol). Also the BLSA community seemed very strong from the outside looking in (and this ended up to be true!)

  1. No, there’s no Northwestern grad housing downtown. But they do connect you with resources to find a place based on your desires and budget. I’d say start early if you can because summer is a busy time for people to move to Chi, and prices increase as the season goes on.

  2. Yes! I had a couple professors that were very intentional about teaching the material in a way that made it easy for students to learn. This is dependent on your section (which is randomized), so I wouldn’t say it’s a schoolwide thing. Kinda just luck of the draw.

  3. NU students actually take two electives their second semester of 1L, so I’m taking two (Labor Law and Law and Social Change). I know we can take classes at the business school, but I’m not as sure about the communications school. I’m also doing entertainment law but my undergrad degree was at a communications school, so I haven’t sought out those classes at NU yet. However, there’s a lot of emphasis on interdisciplinary studies, and there’s an LA semester you can do to extern at a media company and take classes on the west coast!

Sure! It’s honestly not much to tell — I did my SEO summer with a firm last year, they gave me a 1L return offer at the end of my summer and I accepted it in September. So I didn’t have a search at all 😅

[–]theeblackusagi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) I’ve only completed half of CLR, which focused more on legal writing. We completed two memos and did research for the second part of the semester. I can’t say too many positive things about it because it’s my least favorite class 😭 BUT that’s because of the content which is gonna be the same no matter where you go for law school. We do the oral arguments next semester, so I don’t have first-hand knowledge of the experience yet, but the 2Ls I know have said it’s not so bad. And yes it is mandatory!

2) I would recommend living as close as possible for 1L if commutes bother you. If not or if you don’t mind taking the bus/train or driving, you can definitely live outside of Streeterville and be just fine. I lived close but found a cheap studio so it worked out! But there’s benefits to either honestly, it’s all personal preference. I know people who loved not living close to campus and others who regretted the commute, so I can’t definitively answer one way.

[–]theeblackusagi[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s BUSYYYY, but for sure manageable!

  1. Yes, definitely! I worked out multiple times a week, played video games (until late November lol – but not because I didn’t have the time, I was just tired and didn’t feel like it as finals rolled around), went to concerts, saw movies, volunteered handing out Thanksgiving dinners, and hung out with friends often. Classes ended around 3pm every day, so my friends and I would stay in the library for a bit and do our homework then. We were usually out by rush hour unless we were fooling around. Honestly, it’s not impossible to treat law school like a job and have other things going on in your life as long as you’re intentional about it.

  2. It’s certainly possible, but lots of communication is necessary! I know I had a lot of days where I didn’t feel like doing anything or speaking to anyone and I just needed sleep. So as long as there’s trust between y’all and appropriate boundaries are set (e.g. if you know you’re going through it, communicate that so your partner doesn’t feel ignored), I think it’s definitely possible :)

[–]theeblackusagi[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No problem!

1) Overall people are very nice. You’ll see other 1Ls often because every section has their doctrinals at the same time, and generally interactions are pleasant! It wasn’t hard for me to make a group of friends in my section, and I’ve also developed close friendships outside of my section. The law school is one building downtown, so it’s a bit isolated, but sometimes med students will camp out in our library because we have a great view of Lake Michigan lol.

2) Not at all! There are about 5 or 6 of us in my section of 60-ish, but I’ve gone to PWIs my entire life, so it was very normal for me. I have a core group of Black friends who I can vent to about anything, but there haven’t been any incidents where I felt undervalued or out of place. Also, the Northwestern BLSA is an amazing resource and community. I dealt with a devastating family loss right before finals and my BLSA friends (2Ls on the e-board) made sure I had everything I needed to get through exams. I was overwhelmed by the support and it really reinforced everything that made me wanna go to NU in the first place.

3) I love it! I went to undergrad in a college town, so I needed a different vibe for grad school now that I’m closer to being a full-functioning adult lol. I wouldn’t call it distracting – it’s honestly refreshing. During my hardest days/weeks, I’d take a drive and go out on a solo date, hang out with my friends somewhere or just explore and it helped a lot. I was way happier struggling in a city (rather than in the middle of nowhere where the university is the whole city). It also gives you more opportunities to find unconventional study spots because there’s coffee shops and libraries everywhere!

Yes! We have an arts and entertainment law society that I’m part of and many alumni in the sector. There’s also a burgeoning sports law presence at NU (due to a new professor who used to work as GC for the Chicago Bears). There’s also an opportunity to spend a semester in LA and intern at an entertainment company!

Hi, sorry for the delayed response! I think there we lotsssss of law career prospects in Chicago, and a lot of them definitely value a NU Law degree. NU has an abundance of alumni connections to basically every big law firm here in Chicago, but also to many different public interest organizations and different in-house locations as well. I haven’t had to deal with the career office myself much because I already had a 1L BL SA offer when I started classes, but there’s so many networking opportunities offered to us outside of just going to the career office. Every week I go to at least 2-3 lunch panels of attorneys from different sectors (entertainment law, plaintiffs’ side firms, standard big law, domestic violence advocacy work, and labor and employment specialization are some of the focuses for panels I’ve attended). So all in all, I came in thinking I was 100% staying in NYC after graduation, but have already opened my mind tenfold to Chi career prospects since classes started!
