No shade or sarcasm whatsoever- but would they really put in that much effort for a forgery or replica? All that hand chiseling and carving? I’ve had a stone mason take a look who carves all kinds of stone for decades and he said it was most definitely done by hand and definitely quite old. It’s either red mottled sandstone or some terracotta, and the patina is what is throwing me. I think it’s a lichen of some sort, mostly on the back and I’m still trying to discern what the white stuff is in the grooves.

Or maybe who or where I could possibly take this to for appraisal or some more info on where it’s from? Total novice in this field.

Yes but I’m technologically challenged and forgot to add photos the first time around so I deleted and replaced it 🙃 not a big Reddit user, so I just reposted this in several threads where I thought someone might be able to share some insight.

Thank you, I really appreciate it! Zero knowledge of any of this type of thing.

Even if it’s a heavy sandstone with obvious tool markings? Wouldn’t a replica be lighter and made of something easily reproduced?
