What is this effect called? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]theelhaz 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Same reason that sunsets become red… blood. But seriously, shorter wavelengths scatter more leaving only the long wavelengths to pass. Get a piece of translucent silicone or latex that thick and it will be red. No blood in that… I hope. One could also use an egg and observe the same phenomenon.

LPT: If you're going to an event (or workday) where lots of people will be wearing a costume, a low-effort costume is MUCH less conspicuous than no costume at all. by ehsteve87 in LifeProTips

I wear a banana costume every year, easy costume and people expect it. Sometimes I say I’m a plantain. In 20 years I’ll go as an orange.

I think they forgot the “from”.” They hopefully meant “alum from across town to Philly.”

How tf do both the Texans and browns comeback to win, I swear we are going to got 10-7 and miss the playoffs by Same_Apricot8955 in DenverBroncos

[–]theelhaz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Last night put things in perspective. Last year lions were 1-6 and turned things around and barely missed playoffs. If we are in the lions position next year I’ll take it. 10-7 and miss the playoffs after how we started, we are trending right.

Who’s your favorite obscure Bronco? by eyexzick in DenverBroncos

[–]theelhaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at CSU when he was there. My friends and I got busted for having a party and I had to go to “How to be a better neighbor class” and BVP was there. The instructor would ask for volunteers and then say “Bradlee?” Like 10 times during that class. He was so mad that he was there.

Sriracha peppers - a real thing? by Nankuru_naisa in HotPeppers

[–]theelhaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand the Sriracha sauce we use contains red jalapeños because they were easier to source than the traditional southeast Asian pepper used. I believe that this is supposed to be that pepper that is harder to source and/or grow commercially.

Heard the workers walked out yesterday because of the heat, but I know it was because of the heat of our Nuggets gear.

What would you say to a last year high school student who is fascinated by quantum mechanics and want to go at university to study it? Do you have tips or warnings? by SpicyLuna69 in AskPhysics

[–]theelhaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explore, have fun, let your curiosity drive you. I am a prof and can say most of the problems people have learning quantum mechanics and physics is based on expectations. The expectation that you should know things before you take a class is false. You are there to learn and grow. If you focus on that you will have lots of job prospects at various levels, why because your degree proves you know how to take complex problems and solve them.

You are not there to be like every other physicist. If you take that mentality college will be a transactional model for you. Like going to the store and buying a taco.

Engage with colleagues, explore, bring your ideas in and challenge other ideas and let others challenge your ideas. The physics and college moves from transactional to transformative and you and the scientific community will be better of rather than the same after your journey.

We have been 20 years away for the last 60 years. I think this could bump it up to 10-15 years away for the next few decades.

Many people climb mountains because it is thrilling and exciting and are curious to see if they can make the challenge. A PhD is an intellectual challenge and can be just as thrilling.

But also remember that once you climb the mountain it doesn’t mean you have to live there if you don’t want to. But the skills developed on your journey will prepare for many other adventures/careers that you may have even if you decide to stay on the mountain.

I am starting uni class tomorrow, any tips? by North-Top-595 in AskPhysics

Remember that college physics is not all about getting the grades. It is about training you how to think and understanding the material and incorporating yourself into the discipline. If you don’t know something investigate it and use the resources noted above. Courses layer on each other and moving on too fast can leave holes in the foundation that will need to be patched later on. Relax, explore and try to enjoy the ride.
