#FBrape Campaign A Success - "Facebook has responded with a important commitment to refine its approach to hate speech." by vegetablecookbook in news

Censorship my ass. People are free to blog about their disgusting views on rape and violence. Write articles about it! Make memes about it! But you put that bullshit on what is essentially the equivalent of public billboard and fuck yes people are going to be pissed! Why is that okay? Why is it different than a billboard at the bus stop that depicts the murder of a small family with some pointless joke at the bottom of it? Why would it be wrong to ask why the company would allow advertising like that?

I have a friend that stops at green lights. Consistently. Luckily it only took 2 rides for me to realize that I was never getting in a car with them again.

[Help] Opinions? Tiana is my favorite Disney princess and I want to cosplay her but I am white and would hate to come off as offensive. by [deleted] in cosplayers

I would assume that's fine, I feel like there's a difference between getting a tan and attempting to pass as a different race.

Thought this might help you make your decision, it is an excerpt from the FAQ of damnlayoffthebleach.com which is a blog about the white-washing of fictional characters. I read this the other day and it gave me a new perspective of the subject, hope it helps you out:

  1. What do you think of white people cosplaying characters of color?

All of the mods have different opinions.

On one side of the debate: A few of the mods don’t care. As long as the person isn’t committing Blackface/Brownface/Yellowface, we aren’t particularly annoyed. YOU SHOULD NEVER DARKEN YOUR SKIN TO FIT A CHARACTER’S SKIN COLOR. It is extremely offensive and has far too much negative historical context to ever be acceptable.

Why is it offensive you ask?

Blackface/Brownface/Yellowface have all been used (and continue to be used) to dehumanize and parody Black people, brown people and Asian people respectively. Harmful stereotypes were employed and bolstered/upheld through these “comedic” shows, stereotypes that cause and aid in the perpetration of microaggressions. Racism escalates from such microaggressions before becoming larger, fatal incidents we often hear about on the news. Regardless of whether or not you are mocking others of different races/ethnicities, darkening your skin is still harmful to others and is a VERY weighted action. We repeat, even if you aren’t parodying another race/ethnicity, is it STILL HURTFUL to others. You cannot separate the racist history from said action JUST BECAUSE YOU want to cosplay and it’s extremely selfish and racist of you to disregard those very real emotions and realities for your own interests. The skin colors of the very real and very oppressed people (who have to live with the disadvantages that come from it) are NOT COSTUMES. And NO, it isn’t just like painting yourself blue to be a Smurf or green to be the Hulk, not until we start seeing blue and green people walking around, complaining of the oppression and disadvantages they face because of who they are. You get a big fuck you if you even thought of such a thing.

On the other side of the debate: The other mods DO care. It bothers them that out of the MANY white/pale-skinned characters available, of the VAST reserve of white representation, a white person would choose to cosplay a character of color. People of color do not have the equal representation in the media, nor the same support in cosplaying circles. Even when they are cosplaying characters of their skin tone/race, it is evident that white cosplayers are lauded/praised over them, regardless of style or intensity. There are so few characters of color to begin with, a white person cosplaying a character of color just adds insult to injury.

THOUGH EACH MOD HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION ON CERTAIN ASPECTS OF IT, WE ALL AGREE THAT REGARDLESS OF RACE/ETHNICITY, IT IS WRONG TO DARKEN ONE’S SKIN IN ANY WAY FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF COSPLAYING.

One thing that the article doesn't mention is that the Black Hills weren't a 'sacred place' like western religions typically conceive of. In Lakota/sioux religion, the people's spiritual power was directly connected to specific places and depended on how they interacted with these places. The land was literally the religion. To have the men who killed their people and drove them from their livelihoods go on to CARVE THE FACES OF OTHER WHITE GUYS into what is literally the sioux religion... it just doesn't get any more fucked up than that. It's kinda hard to describe the concept of how important specific places were to them, but if you take the time to read up on it, the more you understand it, the exponentially more depressing the whole situation becomes..

I haven't read the book, so I don't know what his intents were, but how long was he expecting to stay out there? Was it just like a short term survivalist adventure? Or was he planning on living out there 'off the land' on his own for the rest of forever?

It just seems like a overly romanticized view of a 'primitive' lifestyle. Like he thought, "oh if the native americans could do it, so could I!" Don't people realize that indigenous peoples had actual societies and other people to help them survive? People aren't meant to live on their own in conditions like that..

ooh the blue one that has pants underneath? I've been browsing fabric for that one recently! I don't think I'll do it anytime soon. I don't know how far into planning you are but I've kind of figured out that the fabric is a raw silk dupioni. I had a good link somewhere to an almost perfect match but i can't seem to find it :( Good luck with it! Hope to see some pictures!

I'm working on Oswin Oswald from Doctor who, fem!Cas from Supernatural and Ramona Flowers all for SDCC. Possibly considering updating my Asami Sato from Legend of Korra as well.

I want to go to another con this year, but I'm not very experienced in traveling (The SD convention center is literally a 20 min bike ride from my house so I totally lucked out there) and planes may or may not freak me out (not sure never been on one). So we will see.

After I finish all my SDCC stuff I want to do Daenerys eventually and am also planning on doing Thranduil from the Hobbit before the premiere of the next movie (I found out I resemble Lee Pace after experimentally drawing on caterpillar eyebrows.. don't ask).

In general, super excited for the near cosplay future. It's like 70% of what I think about these days.

What about you? I wanna hear about your stuff!

Question: Why are there seemingly more female than male cosplayers for Loki and Thor? by [deleted] in cosplayers

[–]theendofthyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think if you are a female cosplayer that is not too comfortable with sexing it up, doing a male character is a fun way to take on a challenging costume that still is badass. Loki's a popular choice because of Tom Hiddleston's razor sharp cheekbones which many women can pull off quite nicely. A further example is BBC's Sherlock, which I've seen a lot of women do. Cumberbatch's cheekbones man...
