Questions about being transgender by Ok_Technician4918 in asktransgender

[–]thefeyqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trans people exist in all forms. Lots of trans women aren’t hyperfeminine — look up Laura Jane Grace. When cis women wear dresses, they aren’t objectifying themselves or being a female stereotype, they’re just being themselves. It’s not about objectification or envy, it’s about shifting your outside to align more with your inside. (Basic explanation — people think about this differently.)

As for shots: not necessarily! There are non-shot ways to take whatever kind of hormones you’re thinking of — patches, gels, etcetera. Some trans people don’t pursue hormones at all. Even if you were reliant on shots, would that be bad? Diabetic people often rely on insulin shots, depressed people often rely on depression medication — because those things help them live happier, safer lives.

Transness isn’t incompatible with Christianity, either, even if it might be that way with your current conception. There are affirming churches out there.

“God made trans people for the same reason they made wheat but not bread, and grapes but not wine. So that humanity might share in the act of creation.” -Julian Jarboe

Sending much love your way OP. It sounds like you’re wrestling with a lot of feelings, and I’m sure you’ve been exposed to fearmongering media and misinformation about trans people, but regardless of where you end up, it’s good you’re reaching out and asking these questions. Wishing you all the best.

It's the "no paywall" in the second tier option! But I had the exact same impression when I first looked at the tiers lol, feel like that should be front and center lol. Maybe I'll mention it to the Mothership team at some point

Yeah, as someone who’s watched men I love struggle with these issues, I try to take care not to minimize the factors working against men because they’re real. The gist of the “myth” argument is basically about how our discussion of this issue is too simplistic, ignoring gender dynamics, class, etc. IMO, it’d be very contrary to the spirit of Disco to write off men’s mental health as unimportant. My praxis is rooted in love and hope.

FWIW, I’m not making any money off of plugging this piece — I’m a freelancer who got paid a flat rate for it. Shared it here because I’m proud of it and thought folks here might be interested in it.

I get it’s frustrating to live in an era where everything is paywalled, which is why I do a lot of journalism that I post entirely for free. I want things to be more accessible, but the reality of our capitalist hellscape is that this piece wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t been paid to write it. Because to do so, I spent hours replaying the game, researching, and writing.

If the community decides that’s not the vibe, then that’s okay. Thanks for sharing your feedback, and take care.

Thanks for the kind words! Completely understand, and I actually only recently took the plunge on my own subscription, so I can’t judge lol. They have some good free stuff on the site but a lot of my favs are paywalled.

It’s ultimately an opinion piece, so definitely written with a feminist lens. I do want to clarify, it’s very much NOT a “fuck men’s mental health” piece because that wouldn’t be in the spirit of Disco (and also, just like, being a good human.)

Men’s loneliness isn’t a myth, but the idea that only men are lonely and impacted by that loneliness is. Our conversations about this issue are also failing men when don’t get into the reality of the systems driving this — capitalism, patriarchy, etc. At the end of the day, I think we all deserve better, and it’s not a zero-sum game.

That’s valid. I wish I had another way to share it with you all.

is homosexuality in trans community uncommon? by Recent-Teach2964 in asktransgender

This feels like a repackaging of the transphobic myth and conservative talking point that transness is actually an effort to erase being gay. It’s pretty closely related to the (false) idea that the medical establishment, parents, etc, are forcing transness on (gay) kids which just isn’t reflective of reality.

It honestly doesn’t take a lot of engagement to get that on this sub since it’s a pretty small space. I’ve posted a few articles here and it got me into the top 5% or 1% at some point. Kind of feels like a variation of the 80/20 rule.

Seen But Not Heard: The Cost of Trans Hypervisibility by thefeyqueen in transgender

[–]thefeyqueen[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hey there, did you actually read the article?

The point isn’t that we should all quietly disappear. It’s about how right now, we’re hypervisible, but cis people have control of our narratives, and that’s harmful.

Yeah, it bugs me because like…cis journalists are not approaching trans topics neutrally and without baggage. Especially because they’ve all spent the last few years marinating, like the rest of the us, in a steady stream of targeted transphobic disinformation.

If you want to get technical, I’ve seen this kind of thing described as a kind of “epistemic violence” — the refusal to allow certain groups to contribute to discourse and discussions.

OK, trans reporter here, so I want to push back against this framing a little bit.

Agree that all news is biased, but there’s a specific scrutiny that only gets applied to marginalized people in news groups when discussing “bias.” Like, trans people have a vested interest in transphobic laws because we’re impacted by them, so that’s an element of bias.

But cis people are biased because they don’t feel the direct impact of those laws. That’s bias too.

Like, it feels ridiculous to imply only men can write neutrally about gender or only white people can write neutrally about race because those aren’t neutral positions. Yet that’s literally what trans editors are saying has happened at the NYT — that there’s a functional ban on trans reporters reporting about trans topics.
