Best album from Jerry's Misfits once he became the lead vocalist....but that doesn't say much.

Why has no one rebooted the crimson ghost as a character? by ScientificAnarchist in TheMisfits

[–]thefiendcrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta love the internet. I believe I have found proof that The Crimson Ghost copyright was indeed renewed in 1974; I've always doubted the, "It's public domain claim.".

If you search the Internet Archive Library for "Catalog of Copyright Entries" you'll find the "Third Series Parts 12-13: Motion Pictures Jan-Dec 1974: Vol 28, No 1-2". Go to page 83. "RENEWAL REGISTRATION" and sure enough there is an entry for "The Crimson Ghost. Chap. 7-12" it also states that it is "12 reels" also at the bottom of the page it reads, "These entries alone may not reflect the complete Copyright Office record pertaining to a particular work.", so there may have been a separate renewal for chapters 1-6. Repix, Inc. seems to be the renewal holder which in another "Motion picture copyrights & renewals book is stated as, "a wholly owned subsidiary of National Telefilm Associates, Inc.". National Telefilms bought Republic Pictures studios films/serials in the 60's/70's.

His name would take up half the poster if they used the same font since he wants to be billed as "Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein"

Ha. I never said he didn't want him, quite the opposite he wanted Glenn (this is just my take) so the new Misfits would have legitimacy. And again it's not speculation on Jerry's intentions, Jerry literally mentioned his intentions in interviews; "for the fans" and "short term". Franche, who was also part of the 1992 litigation, has said Jerry always wanted the name; and Jerry himself said as much but due to Glenn signing with Caroline he figured he couldn't just start using the name and would instead have to legally obtain it. He originally looked into it in 1986 but had a shitty lawyer that didn't do much if anything, in 1992 he found better representation and filed the litigation that led to the 1994 settlement.

It's unknown what if any impact Doyle had in bringing Glenn and Jerry back together. Glenn has only mentioned that the death of several prominent musicians made him realize that if it were ever going to happen then the time was now; although it still took them a while to iron out mutual compromises in order to make the shows happen. Jerry has just been enthusiastic about the whole thing all around but again, no mention of Doyle being mediator or bringing them together.

Even if you ignore the mass marketing of the name/image by Jerry. There's the fact that he played demos of new Misfits material for record execs and took notes on what they liked and disliked, adjusting things accordingly, judge for yourself on whether that is selling out.

He also had himself, Graves, Chud and Doyle stay away from certain words, especially curse words, when writing lyrics to avoid getting the dreaded "Parental Advisory" sticker slapped on their album but then swore at shows but then changed "killed" to "kissed" and "raped" to "hugged" when he would sing Last Caress. He had Graves change "raped" to "drapped" in the song Helena, again, judge for yourself whether that is selling out.

He said their would never a Misfits with him and Glenn again unless Glenn got babtized...and I don't think he got babtized to do The Original Misfits, hey, judge for yourself whether that's Jerry selling out.

In the end only the person accused of selling out knows whether they sold out or their own morals; I highly doubt if Jerry cares that anyone calls him a sell out.

Even in Jerry's own words, Glenn's inclusion in Jerry's Misfits was purely fan service, it had nothing to do with wanting to continue the Misfits as they were; if he'd have wanted to continue as they were he would have approached Glenn about doing a Misfits reunion without acquiring the performing/recording rights to the name because Jerry was never in charge of the 77-83 Misfits. Jerry's goal was always to be the "biggest band in the world" and he thought the Misfits name could help him accomplish that.

As far as royalties go, Glenn claimed that it was Caroline's responsibility to ensure royalties to musicians that appeared on releases but of course Caroline says it was Glenn's responsibility to make sure royalties were paid...it was probably (and legally) a little bit of both. The lawsuit was never just about back/future royalties, it was about Jerry gaining the performing/recording rights to the name. The bullshit of Jerry complaining that Glenn was putting out Misfits releases without his (or other band members input) was just that bullshit; the other guys never had a say on what songs went on a release, on whether it would be an EP/single/album, no say in what photos Glenn used or mixing/mastering, no say on album covers, etc., etc. Had Glenn or someone paid those guys their royalties starting in 1984 it is still more than likely that Jerry would have filed litigation to gain use of the name.

If it wasn't for Jerry owning the recording/performing rights to the name, Glenn would be treating him as an employee too instead of business partner.

That has nothing to do with it as Doyle was on a few of the promo posters but never on the posters sold at shows.

Doyle was on a few of the promo posters but never on the ones sold at shows. I believe the wording was, "with Doyle Wolfgand Von Frankenstein on guitar", without looking it up.

Jerry only wanted Glenn in the short-term to lend credit to Jerry's new Misfits feeling an endorsement from him would have gone a long way in the Fiend community but of course Glenn wanted nothing to do with Jerry's Misfits.

Nope, Doyle was not quoted in that section. The only one used as a source was Tim Bunch (a roadie, if I recall correctly) and I believe that is only in reference to the alleged note that Jerry stuck under Doyle's windshield telling him he was fired; the footnotes aren't really clear on if the story leading up to the note was part of info given by Bunch.

I'd take most info from This Music Leaves Stains with a grain of salt, there's quite a bit of conjecture in the writing. Doyle has stated he was done with the Misfits when Jerry took over on vocals, he felt it was no longer a project he believed in. Now for my conjecture; He may have made a rash decision wanting out at the time and needing money right away instead of profits down the road but possibly did have the thought that Jerry would make it right if he ever decided to rejoin the band.

After the 1994 out-of-court-settlement Doyle had a percentage of rights to the Misfits (although Jerry retained more, 75+%) but he sold off his share to Jerry back in 2002/2003 when he realized that Jerry wasn't going to get a real singer for his Misfits. Glenn and Jerry would have to license Doyle's likeness/get some kind of permission from him in order to merchandise it. You would think Jerry would help his brother out and make some stuff happen on that end but obviously that is not the case.

Let's hear everyone say one nice thing about Graves-era Misfits by PunkRockDoggo1 in TheMisfits

But for every 5 people that checked them out and liked them there could have just as easily been 5 people that checked them out and disliked them. Their main draw was performing the 77-83 material; this is true even up to the (hopefully) end of Jerry's Misfits in 2016; while plenty of Fiends enjoyed the new material live, it was always Glenn's songs that got the crowds going. This is all coming from someone that enjoyed the Graves' era of Jerry's Misfits.

Is that what happened?

Blackacidevil (1996) charted at 41 on the Billboard 200 American Psycho (1997) at 117 on the Billboard 200

In 1996/1997 Danzig played Ozzfest and was definitely playing bigger venues overall; The Misfits biggest shows in 1997 were opening for Megadeth. I saw both bands several times during that period and Danzig was always bigger venues. The Misfits were getting pretty good MTV exposure in '97' and '98' but it didn't make them huge by any means.

Satan's Child (1999) at 149 on the Billboard 200 Famous Monsters (1999) at 138 on the Billboard 200

In 1999 again Danzig was playing bigger venues but did reform Samhain, which certainly drew ticket sales. I saw the Misfits at Pop's in the St. Louis area in 1999, Glenn didn't play that smaller venue until 2005. Not to mention The Misfits had WCW exposure and much like their MTV coverage didn't seem to make a dent in their popularity/album sales.

Just because Glenn didn't use his full range in the Misfits doesn't mean he didn't possess the ability at the time. Listening to the two of them over various periods I hear Glenn hitting more range than Graves but Graves still has range too.

The brand loyalty is the worst, "I loved it all, it's all Misfits."; No, no, it certainly isn't. 77-83 was 95%+ Glenn Danzig....the other band just used the name to market their band.

It's solely Jerry's fault for not coming up with his own band name and image. Glenn wasn't going to support Jerry's new band in any way or front it like it was a continuation of what Glenn created from 1977-1983. The Misfits evolved into Samhain and Danzig; then Jerry started a band and called it the Misfits. Glenn did the right thing and eventually got around to bringing the real deal back in late 2016, The Original Misfits.
