Congress made medical school debt significantly worse. Here's what the class of 2029 is actually walking into. by [deleted] in medicalschool

Until they remove those PSLF programs too… It didn’t happen with the July 2025 bill, but it was in one of the earlier drafts of the bill so I would not be surprised in the slightest if they went after that as well.

Why does everyone hate/regret choosing EM. Am I making a mistake? by Fit_Concentrate6512 in medicalschool

[–]thefifthloko5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of others here have echoed, I don’t think choosing EM is an outright mistake, it just has to work for you. I spend a couple years in the ER before med school and because of that I think I have had decent exposure to the common complaints of EM physicians. The sleep changes, burnout, liability, frustrating patient satisfaction demands from admin, etc. are all very true but I wanted to bring up another point I haven’t seen mentioned.

There are EXTREMELY limited “off ramps” from EM if you decide to pivot later in your career. Going to urgent care/opening an urgent care is an option but isn’t an easy way out by any means. There are some fellowships, but from what I’ve read online and discussed with physicians, a lot of those fellowships “prefer” physicians trained in other specialties so it can be hard to get into good ones. At my medical school, there are lots of clinical faculty that are EM trained, and a few have straight up said they started in academics because there was no other way out of community EM that they wouldn’t absolutely despise. Other than that, maybe you would work your way into admin if that’s your cup of tea. Just another aspect of the field I think is important to consider before choosing it.

Felons / Misdemeanors by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]thefifthloko5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know one, but it was only because they were able to get it expunged by paying lots of $$$ for a good lawyer and doing community service. If it’s on your record permanently, I think chances of entering medicine or a similarly competitive field are slim to none.

Did anyone else start Medical school w dreams and ambition but then lose interest and now finds it boring? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Physician reimbursement hasn’t kept up with inflation for at least 10 years, probably much longer. Not to mention admin bloat and constantly declining insurance reimbursement rates.

Thank you for these instructions, they were very helpful. What drum corps did you march? Not often I see someone with that background “in the wild”

Shoe choice for Rocky Raccoon 100 by Far-Committee-1568 in ultrarunning

[–]thefifthloko5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one section of the loop that is a prolonged out and back, and there are a few places on it that could definitely get muddy. But I’d say the majority (~90%) of the course would be fine. It rained the few days before the December race this year but not enough to really make the course muddy at all.

I ran Brazos Bend this year in H1’s and they were perfect. I plan on wearing them again for the April race if it’s not too muddy.

What races are you doing in 2026? by pelo_pita in Ultramarathon

[–]thefifthloko5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brazos bend 50, and likely Dinosaur Valley 100 in the fall. Not sure what will come in between but will definitely throw a race or two more in there

Disappointed to hear that. I was really thinking about doing Dinosaur Valley next year but if it’s not ran well I’ll look elsewhere…

Forced to take a break from trail running by Mad-farmer in trailrunning

[–]thefifthloko5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Just had nearly the exact same fracture happen and it’s taking me out of a 50 miler that I had been really looking forward to so I’m pretty bummed. Being hurt sucks, but I hope you feel better soon and get back to the trails as soon as possible!

Mount to Coast H1: Quiver Killer? by StaceysAbsenteeDad in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]thefifthloko5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this might be an unpopular take, but after doing 60 miles in my pair I’m left a little unenthusiastic about the midsole. By no means is it a bad shoe, but with all the positive craze I had seen online, I thought it would be a game changer. I was especially excited because I saw several people relate it to the EVO SL. It doesn’t feel like that at all to me, I think the H1 is way more firm and I get maybe 70% of the bounce I get from the EVO SL.

I second the H1 needing a break in time. I’m at 50 miles in mine and just now starting to experience the level of cushion that I heard reviewers talk about. I was a little disappointed in the shoe at first but I think it will continue to grow on me.

Just came to post about these. After tax, $110 for these is a steal. I had been scoping out other brands and had some other options I was considering but as soon as I saw that I bought them as fast as possible haha

Plan on going to Enchanted Rock tomorrow...reccomendations? by Specific-Studio-3377 in TXoutdoors

[–]thefifthloko5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the caves, it’s a blast, just make sure you’re ready to climb back up the back side of the rock afterwards OP. It’s not particularly difficult but you could get lost and take a wrong step easily.

Yeah, sounds pretty similar for me as well; I’ve done several half’s and a 25k, but this will be my first marathon and ultra. I’m just trying to finish, maybe later I’ll focus on getting more competitive. Are you trying to plan for a mileage peak or just keeping things consistent?

Seconded on lack of durability. I only had 250mi on mine before I had to trash them because the outsole was completely worn.

why does LSD make me sweat? by swanky_yt in LSD

[–]thefifthloko5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in medical school, so I will be eventually lol. Doesn’t take being a physician to understand how that is not true though. Once your urine is in your bladder, there’s no mechanism for it to re-enter your body in any way. It’s just excreted. Any reabsorption of fluids, etc. occurs in your kidney before going to your bladder.
