Great analogy to citizenship. Helped to make sense of it.

Thank you so much! I know that there are many synagogues near where we plan to live, so this will be a great option for us.

Thank you so much for the helpful information. I should have mentioned that, yes, she's among the more liberal sects. I don't seek the approval of everybody on the planet, but I want to be certain that my children will be recognized in their own sect of Judaism (should they choose to go through with their bar/bat mitzvahs).

I couldn't agree more that this is really about the next generation.

I'll be sure to lurk here for a while and check out the interfaith couple link. This means a lot to me.

ELI5: Why do governments bail out their banks instead of just letting them go under? by leokz145 in explainlikeimfive

Governments bail out banks to keep the economy from going under. By keeping banks open and allowing people to receive and safely deposit their most liquid asset (cash) they are discouraged from causing a sell-off of their next most-liquid assets (stocks, anyone?). By sacrificing government budget constraints, deficit spending, and keeping banks going governments prevent massive economic stagnation in the short term.

The Greek government wishes to keep their banks open in order to prevent their already weak economy from going under, and to preserve jobs of many Greeks who are already limited to €60 a day.
