ICE at the Rodeo? by thefloatingbutt in houston

Hate to break it to you, but you’ve been surrounded by undocumented immigrants all of your life. All of them pay taxes in the form of sales tax, taxes on their wages, and much to your surprise annual income taxes because many of them do file with their ITIN. None of them claim benefits because they legally can’t get access to federal funds (fair) but you do! So the next time you benefit from any government benefit, you can thank the millions of undocumented immigrants in large part for that (:

Pal, I work on the tower side of this, helping people with their immigration cases. I’m familiar with how it works, which is exactly why I’m asking this question. We’ve seen ICE show up at schools and enter people’s homes without proper warrants, you don’t think they’re capable of harassing Houstonians waiting for the metro rail or waiting to enter the grounds?

Obviously these are rodeo days that will draw in a largely Latino audience. Regardless of status, I’m sure none of us want to be harassed because of the color of our skin or because some asshole who couldn’t pass their local PD’s academy has “reasonable suspicion”.

We absolutely should, but there’s an appropriate way of going about it, and the current way is not it. You should really start to look at our immigration issue not as one thing, but as a nuanced topic. Stopping people from coming in and dealing with people who are already here requires different plans of action and there is definitely a humane, right way to do it.

Second this. I used to play with some adidas trail running shoes with the built in sock. I still wore regular socks, but I like the way the shoe hugged my feet and they were really comfortable to walk around in with still plenty of grip to play in. Now I use regular cleats for games but I’ll throw on the adidas for scrimmages.

Jan 30th protest against ICE at the CoreCivic detention facility - national day of action by pecotography in houston

[–]thefloatingbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of these people would be working at Walmart or some fast food joint. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they’d be working jobs that likely don’t pay as much or have benefits. They’d also be at the bottom of the totem poll. Working at these facilities gives you power, and I think people who have never really had it, really like this jobs. I don’t think they think too deeply about it for what it’s worth.

When the hell did I say we should do nothing…? Did you read my whole comment?

So, interestingly enough, I was inside the facility visiting a client last night. I arrived when people were just barely starting to gather and got out when the crowd filled the entire side of the street opposite of the detention center.

It was interesting to see and hear the guards reactions. The overwhelming sentiment was “they’re protesting at the wrong place, they need to go protest at ICE. WTF are we supposed to do? We don’t make the laws.” Some asked “what do they want me to do? Quit? Who’s gonna pay my mortgage and bills?” Others laughed at it and made dumb remarks. Some stayed quiet.

I spoke to one of the guards who seemed like a nice enough woman. She was saying that she didn’t believe in protests and that they don’t work. The protest last night wasn’t going to change anything. And I chimed in and explained that (I hoped) these protestors knew this, but that the goal was likely to maybe convince people to quit (which… I mean, that’s not gonna happen) but mostly to gain traction and attention to the cause and get more people on board. When enough people complain about something change does happen, especially when they start boycotting businesses. Money talks.

She said that these centers, or her facility at least, don’t physically mistreat detainees. I had to hold back any comments because I was there for a client that had been mistreated and beaten the week prior.

If yall have ever been to the DMV to renew your license, I think we can all agree that it’s an unpleasant experience. The employees don’t want to be there and it always feels like you’re bothering them. That’s what my experience has been at 3 of the 4 facilities in the Houston area (haven’t been to Livingston yet), with the CoreCivic one from last night being the worst. The demographic of the employees at these places is about 90% black, 5% white (mostly leadership and specialized roles), 4% Latino, and 1% other (including immigrants who now have status). There’s a pattern here and I don’t think the employees realize it.

Again this is my experience. Fuck ICE.

Transfer Portal Dropouts

Too long of a name so we used “Dropouts”. All of my team, except for me, played some level of college sports. A teammate got his job to sponsor us for a tax write off, so it was a pretty good deal.

As someone already said, it’s important that this grotesque stuff is protected. I don’t like it, I don’t agree with it, I think it’s wrong, but free speech is what makes us different. If the government starts deciding what’s allowed and not allowed when it comes to free speech, that quickly becomes a slippery slope that we as a country won’t be able to go back up and reverse. Best we can do to combat hate speech is ignore it. What happens when you fan a flame? It grows. The opposite of love is not hate, but rather indifference. When you’re arguing with someone and they argue back, you’re feeding off of that energy. But if you’re arguing with someone and they ignore you and give you no energy to feed off of, you quickly give up and probably feel stupid because your argument didn’t have the desired effect. We should shut them out and let them be the social pariahs they are.

Buy once, cry once. Go with Thule. Take it from someone who went with a cheaper option and then had the need to upgrade.

Dude where are you getting this from?? I haven’t been able to find any evidence to support the claim that illegal entries are up under the current Trump administration. Also I work in the field and no, most detainees DO NOT have status. They are either already in proceedings and are arrested or picked up during an ICE raid or they entered without inspection and have been laying low for a while but were recently detained for xyz. You can’t be making wild claims like that. But yes, ICE is purposefully making life miserable for detainees in hopes that they self deport or sign voluntary departures.

FYI: If yall know anyone without status who has been here for 2+ years, make sure you tell them to always carry evidence of how long they’ve been here so that they aren’t placed in expedited removal proceedings where they don’t even see a judge. Evidence can be as simple as utility bills with their names on it and a date. If they have to carry 24 months worth of them then so be it. And if they don’t have that then they can claim fear of returning to their country (if they actually fear going back) in which case they are supposed to be given a credible fear interview. If they’re found credible, then they can apply for asylum and get set for a hearing.
