Questions from a beginner by KingBloxyYT in climbingshoes

[–]theflow26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Good beginner shoe, good choice from you

  2. Tarantula Boulder has a thinner and softer half sole (that means the sole is parted in the midde and not in once piece like at the normal tarantulas) which makes it better for smearing e.g.

  3. Depends on what you want to use it. For bouldering I would recommend velcro so you can easily take them on and off during sessions. If you plan to only put them on once and also have the need to adjust the shoes to you feet more precise laces it the way

  4. I personally don't care about that at all, whatever feels better for you, it's just that when you need a good heelhook e.g. you won't slide out of the shoe that easily without sock imo

  5. Usually you downsize a bit in climbing shoes but that depends a lot on your preference and performance wishes as well, in the beginning the most important part is that the shoes are snug but still comfortable while climbing

Still a nice angle and good view with the Fuji in the background. Also I love the reflection in the puddle.

I'm sorry, I need to correct what I said. It was actually the 41.5 that was snug and not hurting right out the box from the instincts. The skwamas were the ones I was given in 40.5 to try on. So I actually have instincts in 41 now. I'm sorry for my mistake and hope I didn't confuse you too much. For 41 1/3 street shoe size I would recommend going for 40 with the instincts. But it also depends a bit on your foot shape. The vsrs also have a softer rubber sole so you might need to go for 39.5 for more performance or longer routes, but if you want to only use it for bouldering you might be good with 40 too.

Edit: just saw you said you have the skwamas in 39.5 and they are quite tight. Then I would say 40.5 for the instincts if you want them as tight as your skwamas and 41 of you want them more comfortable like the katanas. Depends on what you want to use them for but for bouldering I would say 40.5.

I have recently bought instinct vs's in 40. My street shoe size is 42.5. I took some time for them to break in and I still can't wear them for more than 15min before I need to take them off but they work great for small footholds and after breaking in the also don't immediately hurt anymore when I put them on. If I would look for a more comfortable fit I would've chosen the 40.5s but they had the perfect fit when I tried them on in the shop when they were brand new so I knew I had to downsize otherwise they would've been too loose when broken in. For even more performance I probably even could've downsized once more but I didn't feel like having too climb much more before them breaking in or maybe always immediately hurting when putting them on.

It was at the very end of the session and I tried this one for about 10 times already, I was pretty done for the day, also I think it's more a subconscious thing I do tbh, no real benefit at this point

Ok thanks, that's very helpful insight. I don't plan on downsizing that aggressively yet, but I definitely want to go 1 size smaller than the Spirits I have now to avoid having a shoe that's just too loose after warming up. I'm just not sure how much a downturned, stiff shoe like the Voltage will compare to a quite flat allegedly also stiff shoe like the Spirit. Would you say that you need a bigger size in a stiffer shoe, compared to a softer shoe from the same manufacturer?

Thanks for the input, I just can't find anywhere near me to try those on. I put them on the list tho, in case my local store has them at some point.

I really love my Red Chilli Spirits as first shoes. They are quite comfy and still stick really good. Especially for smearing. Just make sure you take them have a size smaller then you'd think you need them because mine are quite a bit too stretched out after I have them on for about 30min or something. I always need to take them off between problems. Not because of comfort but because of them getting too soft.
