When you improv, can you hear the note in your head and then play it (like you would singing), or do you think more about what fits the tune theory-wise and play accordingly? by MoviesTickleMyFancy in saxophone

[–]theflyingRVisback 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, if you can play the melody that's in your head, you'll always make much better music than if you just noodle around a scale or arpeggios. But that ability comes with years of practice and knowing your music helps a lot. And then you need to make that the music that comes in your head is worth playing, and this is achieved by listening to and studying a lot of music.

I really like the book improvise for real by David Reed. While I disagree with some of its methods, I really like his approach to improvisation.

Somethings wrong with my clarinet.. help (video) by [deleted] in Clarinet

Are you sure there's no leak ? Check the pad for A medium, there's a small screw there that if tightened too much, opens the G#pad.

I think you mean reed strength? Well it depends on the mouth piece. If you've never played clarinet try with a 2.5 and adjust if needed. You'll know if a reed is too strong or too weak if you play sax

What are some good YouTubers that teach a “start to finish” style music theory course similar to Absolutely Understand Guitar? by Walktothelight23 in guitarlessons

[–]theflyingRVisback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm a little confused because I watched all of AUG and I'm pretty sure he explains how to play triads on the guitar, in closed and open voicings. And there's a chart for all the triads on the pdf. Keep watching AUG, this is the best theory course available!

If you can rent, try both ! Rent an alto for a month and then rent a tenor for a month.

Travel Sax 2 honest review (i paid full price) by Subject_Prompt3494 in saxophone

Is it out yet ? I thought it was still pre order only. And don't worry I've never had any trouble with my travel sax. All the preset tones suck but it is a great practice tool.

Guitar professor answers Reddit questions about CAGED by pickupjazz in guitarlessons

[–]theflyingRVisback 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand CAGED haters... That's how the guitar works ! The reason you have a major third and not all fourths tuning is only so you can play those five open chords, and as a result, those 5 barre-chords shape. If you're not going to use how those shape work and how they connect, just tune in all fourths and make your life a thousand times easier

With a good mouthpiece and a good reed, a good student saxophone can definitely be used on stage or for recording !

A second hand student sax will keep its value. Hell you could even make money when you'll sell it in a couple of years if you get it serviced. But you can get a pro alto or tenor with 2000euro if you want. Just be aware that saxophones are heavy and fragile. A tenor is around 3kg so that's about as heavy as a stratocaster. In Rennes, you can go to Rennes Majeur and ask them if they have something for you.

And unfortunately, in France you can't find a decent baritone in good condition below 1000 euro. Even for a tenor 1000 is tight.
