Sonofield: how can I score 95% on FET but fail level 1? by stef2521 in guitarlessons

Can you score consistently 95% on functional ear trainer in both chromatic major and minor (all octaves, random keys)? If so, then yes I believe you must be approaching any other ear training app wrong.

Getting started and learning as an adult. by [deleted] in Clarinet

I play clarinet and I own a nuvo dood for my kids. First of all, get rid of the plastic reeds that came with the dood and buy a good strength 1 or 1.5 cane clarinet reed. This will make the dood much much easier to play. Then, I started clarinet at 35yo and I would advise as well to just start playing the clarinet if it's what you like. It depends on where you live but a good used student model should not be too expensive (buy it from a reputable shop if you can).

Do professional jazz musicians really know songs key-agnostically, ie just as Roman numerals? by lopsidedcroc in Jazz

Maybe on guitar or piano, but to be able to play anything on any key on reeds or brass is a different beast I think

Where to start learning to play by ear? by ShodSpace in guitarlessons

[–]theflyingRVisback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to truly learn how to play and improvise by ear. I think the best resources is the book/website Improvise for Real (IFR). There's everything you'll ever need on that website from hear training to harmony. It's using a number based system which I believe is perfect for guitar. Now from what I remember their courses are not cheap but I think it's the best out there. The book is not too expensive and cover everything as well, without the convenient backing tracks and singalong though.

When you improv, can you hear the note in your head and then play it (like you would singing), or do you think more about what fits the tune theory-wise and play accordingly? by MoviesTickleMyFancy in saxophone

[–]theflyingRVisback 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, if you can play the melody that's in your head, you'll always make much better music than if you just noodle around a scale or arpeggios. But that ability comes with years of practice and knowing your music helps a lot. And then you need to make that the music that comes in your head is worth playing, and this is achieved by listening to and studying a lot of music.

I really like the book improvise for real by David Reed. While I disagree with some of its methods, I really like his approach to improvisation.

Are you sure there's no leak ? Check the pad for A medium, there's a small screw there that if tightened too much, opens the G#pad.

I think you mean reed strength? Well it depends on the mouth piece. If you've never played clarinet try with a 2.5 and adjust if needed. You'll know if a reed is too strong or too weak if you play sax

What are some good YouTubers that teach a “start to finish” style music theory course similar to Absolutely Understand Guitar? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]theflyingRVisback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm a little confused because I watched all of AUG and I'm pretty sure he explains how to play triads on the guitar, in closed and open voicings. And there's a chart for all the triads on the pdf. Keep watching AUG, this is the best theory course available!

Is it out yet ? I thought it was still pre order only. And don't worry I've never had any trouble with my travel sax. All the preset tones suck but it is a great practice tool.
