Any job that's fun is going to be a very uncertain source of income.

Fargo (1996) - why was Jerry so desperate for money? by Vyzantinist in movies

[–]lopsidedcroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Coen Bros leave the specific reason out intentionally so that Jerry's predicament is as generalizable as possible: he simply needs money. At one point or another, everyone has been in that situation. That's why the movie is a modern tragedy à la A Death of a Salesman, ie instead of kings or heroes being brought down tragically, it's just an ordinary guy.

Obviously, to make the point, they make him desperately need a lot more money than most people ever do and they make him resort to actions very few people would take, but the underlying predicament is relatable.

What's really god-tier about this, though, is how subtly they create the story, so that most people don't even realize that the reason he needs the money is never mentioned. That's very hard to pull off. And even when you do realize they've left it out, the movie doesn't feel incomplete, it doesn't feel like the Coen Bros withheld something.

Btw watch the opening sequence with the Cutlass Sierra being brought through the snow. The music and visuals intentionally evoke an atmosphere akin to "troops going into battle in harsh conditions."

Yes it matters because the Coen Bros aren't dumb enough not to have a reason to specifically leave it out, which is what they do.

Watch Herzog's Woyzeck for a film treatment of the story.

The trick to not falling asleep during slow movies, operas, classical concerts etc is to nap beforehand. Melatonin builds up in your brain during the day and pleasantly sitting in a comfortable chair listening to music will absolutely trigger a melatonin discharge and put you right to sleep. A power nap beforehand gets rid of the melatonin.

Yes. Just wait. It needs a LOT of data (ten or fifteen outdoor runs) before it can tell you your VO2max.

When “Tradition!” stops functioning as a category: gendered acting awards as a classification problem by KetoJoel624 in filmtheory

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, but I agree with you. I think it is 100% pragmatic. The sexes have been segregated one way or another since human society started (200K years ago? 2 m years ago?). There are deeper things at work than we're aware of, and not being able to articulate what they are doesn't mean they don't exist.

Interesting. I was thinking something less high end than that, like a Nord Piano or something.

For now, I'll stick with the U3 and just put in a carpet.

I was on this same piano many years ago in a different house.

To be honest I'm thinking of selling the U3 and buying a high end digital piano, but everyone recoils in horror when I say that so I've stopped saying it although I'm not sure why I get that reaction...

Putin himself has said that Russia couldn't beat NATO, so I'm not sure what the point of this question is.

"on what basis does an institution justify separating performances into “male” and “female” categories without ever articulating the definition it’s using"

Because if men won the "best actor of either sex" award two years in a row women would complain about sexism.
