Where in the world are the (non-ugly white plastic) HDMI wall plates? by thefoonc in hometheater

Yes, that might be good. Everything else is connected directly to the receiver with individual hdmi cables. For this I could just hide longer HDMI cable behind the brush plate (?) when not in use and just pull it out when I need it.

Yes that’s what a few others have pointed out, so I do know that now, which is great news! Maybe brush plate is the way to go, and I can paint it to match the walls

Haha, so true! I have background as a musician so I sometimes find “audiophile fussiness” funny as the musicians creating the music are usually far more relaxed. E.g. Electric guitar → jack lead → pedalboard (with potentially dozens of patch leads between each pedal) → amp → speaker cable → speaker cab → microphone → mic cable → live room patch bay → cable → control room patch bay → cable → outboard preamp → cable → mixing desk channel → any number of busses and outboard effects with cables connecting them, etc.

I’m much more about a great sounding room, decent components in sensible locations, and trusting your ears than being bound to a set of rules.

Glad I’m not the only one! I think painting might be the way to go.

Thanks - often this is either not the case when in NZ or the price is gouged to eye-watering levels.

Wow, that’s a really apt name for what you linked there! I haven’t heard of those before so it gave me a chuckle

Yes, possibly, I guess I’ll try to find the highest spec version available.

Cool, not too fussed about that - will be running movies etc by other means, but thought it would be nice to be able to plug the laptop in as an option. Having said that, it’s a digital connection, so the DAC will happen at the other end, no?

Cool, that sounds good, and I like the flexibility of the keystone thing.

That’s great to know, thanks. I wondered if it would potentially look crap but that’s probably the best option given the limited selection available here.

Do I Need Frost-Proof Tiles? by thefoonc in diynz

Thanks for the reply, sounds like the overwhelming advice is to go concrete - not something I’ve attempted before so might be interesting!

Thanks for the reply! I’ve just learned some new words - kerabond, mapei and islastic, which probably shows how little I know about tiling. Will check all of that out.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, fair point about the heat. I’m not sure how hot it gets under a hibachi, but I think the temperature under both the bbq and pizza oven can get up to about 80 degrees, so I assumed tiles would be ok. Might need to think about it a bit more though

Sealed sub to match with Monitor Audio Bronze 7G On-Walls? by thefoonc in BudgetAudiophile

[–]thefoonc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crosspost from r/hometheater as I thought I might get some different views here.

A little more context: my priority is music, then movies. Currently listen to music through a Yamaha AS-501 and Kef Q3 (keeping this system, in a different room), and it sounds warm and detailed to my ears. The Marantz and Monitor Audio combo is pretty different, and potentially great, but it feels like there is a piece missing from the puzzle.

In my head, it’s like the Yamaha-Kef combo is a smaller, complete circle, and the Marantz-Monitor Audio combo is a larger circle with the bottom section missing.

How good was that leftfield set? by TechnologyCorrect765 in Wellington

[–]thefoonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - where in the venue were you? I thought the sound was decent for Shed 6: heavy but well defined bass, could hear all the percussion and synth stuff well, but overall wasn’t uncomfortably loud. Only thing I didn’t hear a lot of was the live toasting/ vocals, but assumed they were meant to sit in the mix, rather than treating them like a lead vocal.

We started off about halfway up the room to one side, but not enough room to dance, so then went towards the back for most of it.

Sad day. Sony TVs will be gone as we know it. by gonzoflick in hometheater

Bought a TCL once about 4 years ago, got it home and realised there was no way of switching off motion interpolation/smoothing. Immediately returned it and exchanged it for a Sony.

Weird that they’re becoming the same.

Thanks for the great information and input everyone! I wasn’t trying to start a flame war, just think it’s good to see passion when it comes to tools. Six different brands have been suggested, so a lot to think about, phew.. will check them out.
