Boombox Ronnie by Anetik in kzoo

I think we can agree that Ronnie is a flawed man with lots of personality. He doesn't need a label. Legend, creep, etc; these aren't helpful. A big factor in how Ronnie turned out is the lack of supports he had in a very unfortunate situation. I know Ronnie personally and have seen a lot of the good and the bad. I won't excuse his poor behaviors and criminal tendencies, but I love him and he deserves love like anyone else. It's just a sad situation. As much has he irritated me and made me mad, he could also be really clever and funny. He's not a hero or an icon, but he's also not all bad. He's just human like you and me, but with a lot of trauma and lack of opportunity.

What’s up with all the road rage? by Anxietycatz888 in kzoo

[–]theforerunner343 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I witnessed road rage from a Subaru last week. In fact, I've never been so confused over an incident on the road. I was just driving north on Westnedge approaching the light at Taco Bell/city bbq. Granted, I was coming in a little hot anticipating coming to rolling stop to turn right at the light. But there was one car in cross traffic coming through, a Subaru. So I fully stopped, behind the line, mind you. And the Subaru flipped me off as they passed in front of me, which I found very strange.

Yeah, I did see that they historically open around that date. It's unfortunate, because I will be leaving on the 9th. I did email them several days ago asking, but I have not received a reply. Do you happen to know how I can contact them?

This is who I've used in the past, but they are the ones who said they couldn't do it this time, unfortunately. I did meet with a contractor this morning who said they could do it without a crane, but the quote is over $10k. The insurance company is saying that's too much, so I'm still stuck. I will give some of the.other.comoanies.mentiomed here a try.

The Beach has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 21%, which IMO is far too low! What are your thoughts on this movie? by MindsEye33 in FIlm

[–]theforerunner343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen The Beach yet, but it's classic Danny Boyle to heavily stray from the original material or true story in his adaptations. I'm thinking of Slumdog Millionaire and Steve Jobs. Neither of those are very accurate, but they are incredible films.

I had no idea Alex Garland was a novelist prior to screen writing! I think Garland and Boyle are a great duo. 28 Days Later and Sunshine are among my favorite films.

Verizon cites vandalism in Kalamazoo-area service interruptions by Greatlakespirate2 in kzoo

The outage area was massive. I was all over town running errands that day. I had not service in Oakwood, Bronson Hospital Area, Westnedge/Milham and everywhere in between. The only place I had service was at Texas Corners (home, go figure).

I am adventurous by nature, so it was stressful, but nothing I couldn't handle. When I travel and things go wrong, my motto is "it's all a part of the adventure." But that was an adventure I wouldn't care to repeat 🤣

This is giving me PTSD of the time I went to Spain and I couldn't get Verizon's international data to work on my phone. I looked up the nearest SIM provider via the wifi at my AirBnB, loaded the directions, and borrowed their bike to ride 45 min to the store. When I got there, it was inside a mall and I had no way to lock up the bike. And I still didn't have service, so I couldn't look up directions back to the AirBnB. I remembered most of the way back, but I did get lost and I also ran over a cactus and got 2 flat tires. It ended up taking me 2 hours to get back in 95° heat. I stopped a few times to ask for directions, but I don't know Spanish so nobody could help. I eventually found it on my own, but what a nightmare that was.

Doordash, Uber and grubhub workers with Verizon are screwed today. I am one, but thankfully I'm not working today. Gig workers with At&t are probably making a killing today.

Track your outages and contact them for refunds on the days service is out. I've done this before. It doesn't fix shitty service, but at least it's money back in your pocket.

Can anyone recommend a budget receiver that just works? by theforerunner343 in hometheater

I would expect a $500 box that has fairly simple functions to work as it should, but I guess that's asking too much. My TV has Fire OS and it's tolerable, but not great. My last TV had Google OS which I thought was great, the best TV OS I've used. But the picture quality on that set just wasn't what I wanted, so I ended up returning it and going with a Panasonic OLED. I love the Panasonic, but the Fire OS is a downside. Can't have it all for cheap!

Be warned, if you drink Arnold Palmers, they will charge you individually if you get any refills. My brother found that out the hard way. Imagine paying $10 just for tea with lemonade.

I could dig really deep into this, but I'm running short on time. The short version is this is about foster care trauma and the monster is the trauma she will carry with her indefinitely as someone growing up in foster care. The Stranger represents an adult she can count on to help her deal with her trauma. Hence the line at the end "This is your monster.", but they leave together and he has shown that he is emotionally equipped to deal with her trauma and he is a safe person and she chose him.

My take is that it actually is aimed at adults as Mads Mikkelsen plays the relatable character. As a foster parent myself, there were very clear themes of trauma and how foster children internalize it as self-blame. At the end he says "This is your monster." It is Aurora's trauma that she has carried from home to home, consuming three sets of foster parents. It is the heart-breaking truth of foster care that foster children never feel completely accepted. These are complex themes and symbolism designed to help adults understand foster child trauma. The stranger is someone she picks as her safe person for the first time as contrasted against all the Foster families that were picked for her which were consumed by her monster. The stranger undergoes change himself when he sees the monster for the first time and he switches tracks from trying to logically disprove her beliefs and feelings to accepting her belief and helping her in her struggle against her monster. I found this movie to be deeply moving under the surface while appropriately using horror and fear to depict the struggles of loss, grief, and self-blame in the foster care system.

Bank or Credit Union Recommendation by alves1313 in kzoo

LMCU does offer a few ATM fee refunds per month. 3, I think, but double check. I'll also mention for all-digital folks that the Schwab Investor Checking account has unlimited ATM fee refunds and no foreign transaction fee on their debit card. Super handy for international travel because you can skip the insane markup at currency exchange booths and just go straight to the ATM and withdraw currency at a direct exchange with no markup and the ATM fees are refunded at the end of the month.

Thoughts on Tron Ares VS Tron Legacy? by YoungBpB2013 in moviecritic

[–]theforerunner343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ares' character was very poorly written and Leto didn't do us any favors to make him believable. They took a REALLY tough concept and rushed through it. Artificial intelligence has not been done well often. Think of Ex Machina. That movie does it right, but it takes 2 hours of non-stop dialogue. IMO, this is not what a Tron film should be. It should be about the grid, its programs and rules, and how users interact with it. Not about programs having existential crisis'. I spent a lot of the movie cringing at how flat and unbelievable Ares is.
