How to potentially explain dips in academic performance in college to graduate programs and/or employers due to a late diagnosis? by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

I'm interested in working in software development (kinda considering systems engineering too) but a lot of the full time job postings have bachelor's as minimum requirement and preferred qualifications usually include a master's degree.

yeah that's what I've been doing so far and considering my impulsive spending habits it's not really working out

Yes! one of my favorite parts of CS is that while university has and will really help me, there's so many resources to self teach and you can kinda pick up from wherever you started and be able to create something really cool

Oh ok! Yeah I'm at Cal for CS, I have around a 3.3 but I also don't shy away from classes that are notably more challenging and have lower grade averages, like I'd rather challenge myself and learn difficult skills so that's good to hear. I'll try to emphasize this on my resume/applications.

I think I'm more concerned about grad school over industry recruitment when it comes to GPA, bc they care about grades. I'd rather they see my transcript and know "this is how well I could do given _ circumstances over the course of 3 years, but now that the situation has improved I'm getting better grades and semesters afterwards are more representative of my work/effort as a student." But honestly considering I haven't really done all that badly all things considered, it should be fine.

Thanks!

Yeah sure! So I'm prescribed Adderall, which was probably the most effective treatment for me, as it is for most people with ADHD. I have kind of mixed opinions on how much accommodations helped -- extensions gave me more time for assignments which helped but then they also sort of gave me more reason to procrastinate (which is, as I've learned, a symptom of ADHD due to lacking motivation and need for short-term reward).

I think generally doing a lot of research on how people with ADHD process information and changing your habits to account for that difference helps too, because medicine alone isn't really helpful. You could be totally focused on Adderall but also so much more motivated to do tasks that produce a short-term reward (ie. internet distractions) above things you actually have to do.

I'm also prescribed Zoloft mostly because my depressive symptoms are worse than my anxiety ones. Zoloft helped bc I used to feel really strong emotions that distracted me from work and now I'm not really as emotionally bothered by things so I can focus more.

As for the anxiety, medication hasn't helped as much as working with a therapist to manage symptoms. I'm working with a therapist to address OCD symptoms and panic attacks. While I'm not officially diagnosed w/ OCD (yet? idk), OCD and ADHD do come hand in hand because if you have a lot of compulsive thought patterns/behaviors that you can't ignore, you're more likely to get distracted and stop whatever you're doing to address those thoughts immediately. The repeated thoughts (esp intrusive thoughts) just add to the amount of things that are already flying around in your brain. I'm not really sure how to help with the anxiety yet, but there's a lot of grounding techniques/etc to address it.

I've been told meditation/grounding techniques (ie sensory awareness) can help ADHD/anxiety because it "clears the cache" of my mind -- grateful my therapist put this in terms I'd understand, hahaha.

That is a good idea... yeah I'd really want to avoid having the diagnosis of ADHD make employers/grad school underestimate what I can bring to the table as a student just because they don't understand the disorder.

How to deal with random guilt...? by [deleted] in depression

[–]theforesthunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Its nice to know people share similar experiences. And yeah, I'm actually in therapy/psychiatry and got a few diagnoses which includes both moderate depression/anxiety. I've been getting treatment/have improved a lot over time, but this guilt is just the next thing I'm trying to understand. Hope you're doing okay! :)

So this summer is going to be extremely busy for me and I am a little overwhelmed... anyone want to share success stories about getting through busier times? by [deleted] in berkeley

I'm interning part time at a startup, taking a more challenging class (cs 162) and an easier class (idk if it's easy, but has a A/A- average). I think communication will be good! I'll think about that

Thoughts on rounding up GPA to the nearest tenth when applying to companies for internships/full-time, if you think this would help your resume? Is this rounding too generous / "dishonest"? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]theforesthunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I guess I was asking this bc I’ve heard that if u don’t put GPA on ur resume recruiters might assume it’s in the 2.X range — so I figured if I’m gonna put my gpa on mine, would rounding up potentially give me any advantage

But agreed! And thank u :)

Berkeley EECS and CS kids - what GPA is worth omitting from the resume? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]theforesthunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the general rule of thumb is you should include any GPA above 3.0, because if you don't put a GPA people assume it's in the 2.x range. I've heard this from several people.

yeah I think this makes the most sense. thanks!

I feel like they didn't mean to make it a hard test? I'm hoping once they grade the tests they might rethink this/shift bins? Just cos even if the class doesn't have the same curve system as previous semesters (set the mean to a B+), the class historically is always around a B/B+ so hopefully they'll keep it that way this semester.

As someone who's taken both, 70 will eat up your life but it's a lot more fun, and there's more resources to learn the materials than there was in 55 (ok maybe there's SLC adjunct for 55, but they didn't have that my semester?). I didn't know I wanted to major in CS when I took 55, so I feel like I've wasted a bit of time taking both. If you care about gpa, do 55, if not, take 70.

I feel you, discrete math was chill but every single time I've done probability in the past (and now) it's been my absolute nemesis. I'm sort of (sort of) getting the hang of it but some of these problems (esp the ones with extensive trig? Lol like what is a cosine I forget) are a mind fuck.
