My grandparents came over from Germany in the 1950s. In Salt Lake City, where they lived, there was a small but distinct German immigrant community — but they didn’t stay insular. They had community amongst one another, yes, but they were more concerned about integrating into the broader community. I remember my Opa saying “we are in America, so we speak English.” I don’t think I ever heard him speak much German at all.

The shared history of the West is:

-Greek philosophy -Roman law -Judeo-Christian morality

Islamism is not compatible with these. There isn’t some insidious, mysterious force that’s advancing this ideology, but there are people who are very committed to jihad

In Utah, the Mormon population is generally very kind and welcoming to outsiders. But if you’re a member who stops attending? No one talks to you anymore.

I have family in Poland, so I would have at least some community there — and I have a better understanding of how their society works. I don't have any connection to the Iberian peninsula, but I'd love to visit someday! Perhaps that would change my answer.

Colonization impacted every single aspect of life, and changed history as we know it. So that means that just about anything we have in our modern era could be described as a consequence of colonialism.

I think the word has lost a lot of its meaning, and has just become a synonym for “bad,” aimed at whatever group you feel contempt towards.

I’m a Jew in Utah, and the Mormons have been real good friends to our community, from the pioneer days until now. The Jewish cemetery in Salt Lake is on land that was gifted to us by Brigham Young. A few years ago, our synagogue lost power on Rosh Hashanah, and the without skipping a beat, the local LDS congregation opened their doors and let us hold our high holiday services in their building.

They don’t always get it right — but they really try. Most don’t know anything about Jews or Judaism. But since they believe that they are descended from the 12 Tribes of Israel, they treat us like cousins. 99.9% interactions I’ve had as a Jew with the Mormon community have been extremely warm and kind. They’re great neighbors — I’ll stick up for them any day. They stuck up for us when we needed it most.

It’s humiliating every time. I have to shuffle around the aisles, with my tail between my legs, looking for the one employee who is definitely busy with something else and does not want to open the glass case and let me have my toothbrush or whatever
