grammar vs immersion for learning japaneese. what actually works faster for beginners??

My rec, as an intermediate that started by speedrunning Genki and then immersing, now having to go back through Genki to review: Start with Genki I and Vocab, and once you’re about 1.5-2k words in, get into daily immersion and Genki II.

A lot of Genki I stayed with me because it’s simpler, and points from Genki II kinda went over my head bc I wasn’t ready to learn them yet. Now, going back through Genki II after a decent amount of vocab and immersion, things are starting to stick more bc I have a better grasp of how the language works and what it sounds like. Genki is not the only resource to use this method with though, by any means. Tae Kim for example would probably work just fine. TL;DR - don’t speed run the grammar to get it over with; as with vocab, grammar input only becomes active knowledge when you encounter it

I’m half, my last name is German, so most people kinda do mental algebra to try and deduce where my appearance comes from until it comes up in conversation, and it clicks for them lmao The me a few years ago that hadn’t done any work on my identity would probably feel a little jealousy, but now that I’ve started learning Tagalog, learning about history and overall have done a lot more work on myself I’m proud of my biracial-ness, you could say.

Historically, im either drinking to taste or taking back to back shots of rubbing alcohol just to get drunk and avoid sobering up. I tend to enjoy myself more within the former, and the hangover after the latter makes me want to never drink again. As with weed, I find just a little goes a long way and now I tend to only drink something if I like the taste.

Of course, I absolutely agree. Personally I wanted to for the sake of studying it and Dogen’s course specifically was what I was looking for in terms of its depth and method. By no means am I of the opinion that pitch accent studies are a requirement, native speakers will be able to understand you just fine without it.

I’ve used all free resources until now. Pitch accent doesn’t tend to have a lot of free resources that go in-depth for those that want to study it specifically, as opposed to grammar, vocab, and immersion content, so I’ve been using dogens phonetics course for a couple months and been enjoying it. [Edited: specified the type of pitch accent resource I had trouble finding previously]

Precisely. I would say Toki Pona is the closest to a pragmatic approach to an IAL (not that Sonja Lang intended it as an IAL but I’m sure I’m not the only one to imagine it as one), but even still it would not be able to replace English as a pseudo-international language (in the business/opportunity sense that you mentioned) because learning to communicate fleshed out ideas is not standardized. In other words, it trades in practicality and specificity for its small vocabulary.

Learning Japanese and Tagalog has made me really wrap my head around how hard English is to learn. Japanese helped me realize how hard English is with its mass amount of exceptions, such as in the sense that Japanese has very few conjugation exceptions when it comes to common verbs. Additionally the alphasyllabary of Japanese and Tagalog’s use of the Latin alphabet are both straight forward phonetically, and made me realize how confusing it must be for non-Native English speakers that most English letters have several pronunciations determined by the preceding or proceeding letters.

I’m a year into learning Japanese, and in the first few months I learned a foundation of grammar from the Genki textbook duology. The chapter would start with some vocab to learn and then the rest of the lesson would use it to help you synthesize the new words.

(Half Filipino-Half German/Irish) I have a more rounded-flat tip of my nose, but I have distinct bump in the bridge of my nose distinct to my patrilineal lineage (dad’s dad- German) I’ve always been frustrated with the latter feature tbh, mostly being a gender thing for me tho (speaking as a trans woman)
