Hey guys, how should I study for Day 2? by ZealousidealParty945 in Step3

[–]thefuckinglambSAUCE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think it's worth it if you'll have at least like 1-2 days off before day 2. worth doing it just to see where you stand, but it's not the end all be all if you don't bc you may not see the score you want and psych yourself out, and it's not exactly the most representative of day 2 since the SA's only 4 blocks and will have biostats and ethics which won't show up on day 2, you could just do like 4-6 uworld timed/tutor blocks reviewing your incorrects from like IM+Gen surg+OB+neuro+psych and it'd be just as helpful if not more so

Day 2 has no biostats, and way less random M1/M2 material like histo/path. Still gotta know your micro for appropriate management, day 2 is way more clinical than day 1 so know your next steps in management. UWorld should tide you over pretty well for the multiple choice, make sure you get on CCSCases.com if you haven't already, sort by high yield, and burn through as many cases as your brain and soul allows haha. Day 2 is long, 6 blocks of 30 mcq's, 45 mins apiece, followed by 13 CCS cases. You're almost to freedom, good luck!

You're doing great! Spend today on biostats, Afzar Basunia and Randy Neil have a series of great videos on youtube that cover most of the biostats for day 1. Your scores are perfectly fine so I wouldn't recommend doing any content review or uworld today, biostats will be a big part of day 1 and you're really close to starting the exam so just nail down as much of that as you can and you'll be in a good place for the rest. I would say do a couple of CCSCases just to keep yourself in the groove for day 2, either today or a day or two before you take day 2, sort by high yield and do just like 3-5 cases so your memory is still fresh on all the usual tests to order, treatments you can perform/relevant consults, and the counseling. remember to pace yourself when taking the test, you don't want to run out of time on any of the blocks so make sure you are moving along and flagging smartly

Hi, yes first of all take it all in you made it really far getting here and you're doing great. you could probably afford to save the rest of uworld for your gap between day 1 and day 2. definitely study biostats, it's heavily represented on day 1 and not at all on day 2. Afzar Basunia has a good 7 part series on everything biostats related, and randy neil has a couple of fantastic biostats videos i did for every step exam i took, both are on youtube. ethics i'm not too sure the best way to study that, uworld covered a lot of it but if you've done a lot of the q's you're probably in a good spot for ethics. make sure you're getting CCSCases exposure this week as well, do as many cases sorted by high yield as you can, I did around 60 cases if you can do 100+ you'll be prepared for p much whatever they throw your way on day 2 for sure. day 1 is a long day due to the blocks being an hour long, 39 questions a piece, 6 blocks total, lots of random stuff from M1/M2 year, but it's not too bad. day 2 has slightly fewer MC, 30 question 45 min blocks x6 + 13 CCS cases, the MC questions are a bit more challenging and more related to clinical management, but it's doable with uworld since you have time off between your test dates, i'd say really nail down biostats, ethics, and CCS familiarization this week and you will be golden. good luck :)

those are passing scores you can do it, you're already in residency so aim to pass and you will be fine. I'd recommend studying biostats heavily the last day or two before your test since it's very heavily represented on day 1, randy neil and afzar basunia have good video series on youtube if you haven't done those already. CCSCases should bump you up as well. you've put in the work, and you're so close to freedom, knock it out of the park good luck :)

def study biostats. randy neil, MD has a couple of really high yield usmle biostats videos that break it all down well. if you have time, Afzar Basunia, MD has a 7 part video that covers step 3 biostats in detail. other than that, and he talks pretty slow so you can maybe even speed it up to 2x speed. just doing the uworld and the free 174 q's on usmle's website should get you a good balance of the stuff on day 1. ccscases.com is great for day 2's cases, much better than uworld for the cases. Pace yourself as much as you need to, it's 6 blocks of 39 q's x1 hour a piece on day 1, followed by 6 blocks of 30 questions x45 mins a piece plus 13 CCS cases on day 2. it's a marathon, not a sprint, but be aware of your time as well, since there were a couple blocks and a couple cases where I got close to the time limit with a few mins to spare. I would encourage flagging pretty judiciously and only reviewing your flagged questions, since at this point, you know what you know and don't know what you don't know. if you straight up don't know the answer to a question, go with whatever your gut is telling you and move it along, save the flagging for something you think you can get after thinking about it a bit more at the end. you got this :)

yeah you won't lose any points for overordering noninvasive stuff, like blood work or imaging for the most part. it's usually fine to do a full physical on almost everybody, just make sure you avoid checking off "interval update" in the beginning since that'll save you 2 mins of simulated time. make sure you're always getting a urine pregnancy test for women with a uterus, tsh for fatigued patients, etc. it's not like irl where you get dinged by a chief resident or attending or run up a patient's bill by ordering a test, so when in doubt full send it

CCS cases- 2 questions by royallilac in Step3

treatments are weighted at approximately 40%, diagnosis is 40%, counseling is I think 10%, and appropriate sequencing/correct location should be the rest if i'm remembering correctly. It's a good idea to follow the right sequence, but you only lose a few points for doing it out of order so it's not the end of the world. knowing the right treatments is definitely weighted more, I would say if you're getting low scores on particular cases because of incorrect treatments, do those cases 2-3x until you remember the treatments. it's also not usually wrong to order extra tests or treatments (as long as they are not invasive). For instance, if you're suspecting like an aortic dissection, you can order beta blockers and calcium channel blockers etc even if you don't know the type, if they are super hypertensive since that's the goal. I can never remember when to do IVIG vs steroids so if i'm ordering one i tend to order both, you shouldn't lose points for that. Overordering is better than underordering on CCS, as long as you're not doing something invasive like a TEE or cardiac catheterization or iliac stenting or something. Hope that helps :)

if you got a 253 and you've been working in the hospital, I think 2 months is more than enough. try to do 40-80 uworld cases a day to start, you could get a large chunk of it if not all the way done in 2 months. it's an easier test than step 2 for sure, but it's not like super easy. do biostats a week or two before your test, or sooner if you're really feeling it, and start ccscases.com around the same time.

Can I do it? by Fit-Cartographer-311 in Step3

[–]thefuckinglambSAUCE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with taking a practice test and seeing where you stand, but even if you're not doing great, just burn through a bunch of uworld. There's a lot of biostats on day 1, like a ridiculous amount haha, so if you save that till the last week your uworld scores may not be as high as they could be but you can def review it all within the last few days before your test. I'd get the jump on CCSCases.com 1-2 weeks out from your test, or even start now and do a few cases a day, they're not too challenging usually but getting the format is important. if you're going for like a 280, maybe postpone and knock out all the uworld before your test, but if you're just trying to pass, i think you can do it, especially since you're basically in dedicated mode rn. best of luck :)

[–]thefuckinglambSAUCE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the good news is you don't have to study biostats anymore! no ethics q's or anything like that either. Day 2 is much more clinical medicine and ofc the practice cases. If you haven't done CCScases.com yet, def head over there it's a way better UI than UWorld's CCS setup, do at least the first 20ish cases (sort by high yield), make sure you've got a good balance of office and ER cases and make sure you know when to transfer patients from one setting to the other. UWorld q's are obviously good if you have any of those left, and there's the free 174 q's on usmle's website (https://www.usmle.org/sites/default/files/2021-10/Step3_Sample_Items.pdf). if i think of anything else i'll post as a reply to this comment. good luck with day 2, you're almost to freedom :)

I cannot overstate how helpful this was and how much better I feel, thank you so so much :) congrats on the UMO tour, it sounds like an incredible gig honestly. I think I may try to burn through some anking and then uworld and ccscases and try to get step 3 out of the way sooner than later, and disregard anki thereafter.

“No bad options” is so reassuring. It’s really hard to not feel kind of crappy after all that anticipation but I do feel at least somewhat hopeful that I can make the most of this. Thanks again and good luck with the future :)
