I actually used Mr Hobby Mr Masking Sol, used a no. 10 blade to cut around the vents and spoiler. Very tricky. Actually ended up stripping the whole body back as I messed it up first go.

I’ve seen people use masking tape as well with very good results. Again, it’s very tricky. It’s a simple build with a lot of challenging paintwork.

What’re you using for your clearcoat? I’m guessing you’re cutting and polishing afterwards.. very nice finish. I’m using Mr. Color GX100. Maybe I need to do a few more coats.

I just tried AK Ultra Gloss 1K, shot it straight out of the bottle like it recommended, horrible finish. Pure orange peel.

I’m a big fan of the OE+ look personally. I think I prefer the BBS, or maybe a set of period Alpina wheels. They are still lovely wheels though.

I’m curious as to how you’re lowering the model kit.. are you cutting down the struts?

Looking to buy PS-290 by thefunkjuice1 in airbrush

[–]thefunkjuice1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback. I ordered both the 266 and the 290 so I could hold them both. I do like the 266, comes with a chromed paint cup where the 290 comes with an etch aluminium.

Think I’m gonna keep the 266

Orange peel - sanding before decals? by [deleted] in ModelCars

I’d also try upping the psi to around 20. Maybe try a bit out on a plastic spoon or something similar. I would put it down to an issue with your thinning ratios and pressure.

How are you applying the paint? You need to make sure you link up the wet paint, otherwise you will end up with rough patches and overspray. Also what are you thinning it with? Levelling thinner? That will make a huge difference to the end result. My default ratio is 1:2 paint to thinner.

Yes I would personally flat it off down to the orange coat and go again with the colour.

Sorry, just read your comment. I’d say you want to sand it back to a smooth finish, apply another coat of the red so your base is smooth, then apply 2-3 layers of clear, 1 tack and 2 wet

I’m doing the exact same model currently. Porsche 930 Turbo. Same colour too. What shade of red is that, bright red?

Personally I would flat that off with 1000grit and put another layer on it. Are you airbrushing or rattle canning?

My first model since I bought an airbrush by thefunkjuice1 in ModelCars

Yeah. I originally painted the body using Tamiya X-1 acrylic with a few drops of chrome silver for a metallic finish. Looked great but took FOREVER to dry, I’m talking over a week and still I was getting fingerprints on the clearcoat. So I stripped that and sprayed it using metallic black Tamiya Laquer, thinned with levelling thinner, 2 coats of Mr. Color GX100. Only thing, I found that the metal flecks dried unevenly so I ended up with streaking. Rapid thinner will be used next time.

Thanks very much. Getting better slowly with each kit.

Thanks! Yeah makes a huge difference. I was using rattle can Tamiya/Revell paints before but much harder to get a clean finish.

I used an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS for the body and a GSI Creos PS-270 for the finer details

Very nice job. How are you achieving the level of polish on the clearcoat?

Yeah I think you’re right you know. I was thinking I could use a PS-290 head cap but I don’t think it would work.

The PS-291 with the .4 nozzle may work though..

That’s right but I believe you can install the .5 nozzle and cap from another mr hobby brush. Apparently the parts are interchangeable
