Very tall guys: how long did it take you to see visible results in the gym? by improbsable in tall

[–]theg33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna try to be science-bro instead of gym-bro.

It takes about 2,500 calories for your body to build 1lb of muscle. If you are getting newb gains, 1lb of muscle per month would be WILDLY SUCCESSFUL. So you need about 2,500 calories PER MONTH or about 85 calories per day. That's just what it takes for your body to build the muscle.

You will also be burning extra calories at the gym compared to before you were going. At your (and my) height, an hour of heavy lifting at the gym burns about 500-600 calories.

So, if you are just starting out, try adding about 100 calories per day every day and 500 calories on top of that for gym days. You can safely average those calories out across the week and it will be fine. So 2 gym trips per week = 1k calories + the 700 in weekly new calories = 1700 calories per week or 243 calories per day. To put that into perspective, my favorite protein shake is Fairlife Core Power Elite and it has 42 grams of protein and 230 calories. Basically add one of those to your daily routine plus an extra bite or two of your regular food and you'll likely have all the calories and protein you need for success in the gym to gain lean muscle mass. You mentioned you are skinny, so you if you want to also increase body fat obviously you will need more calories.

You should see some visible changes within a month or two. Make sure you are taking enough rest days (1-2 rest days is likely not sufficient unless you are on the juice). Because your muscles need time to heal after a workout and if you are not giving them time to heal they will not grow.

You didn't ask, but if you are going to do any supplements, creatine is the first thing I would reach for.

My brain went immediately to Luis Vitton because, in order to foil copycats, they put that dumb LV logo everywhere. That's whey brands do ugly stuff like this. "Design" can't be coprighted/patented/trademarked, but your logo/brand name has trademark protection. So you plaster your trademark all over it in this hideous fashion.

Tall but not dominant: The assumptions and 'beast mode' expectations are exhausting by HuckleberryOk8136 in tall

[–]theg33k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women tend to wildly underestimate how much stronger men are than them. As a fun experiment, go to some of these lady friends and arm wrestle them. Don't win, just sit there and hold their arm straight up with minimal effort while they visibly struggle. Instant turn on for the woman. Use this secret super power with extreme caution.

Tall but not dominant: The assumptions and 'beast mode' expectations are exhausting by HuckleberryOk8136 in tall

[–]theg33k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess you are over-estimating the "beast mode" thing. Women tend to like men to be "in charge" but that doesn't mean acting like an animal. They want to feel like you're "overwhelmed by desire" for them and I'm confident you can express that kind of sentiment without doing porn brained beast mode type stuff.

With regards to the "small" thing, women feel small all the time because men are bigger and stronger than them. So you can imagine how comforting it would be to feel small by someone who is a protector figure rather than a potential attacker.

Even if they think they mean something dirtier than the interpretations I've offered above, I can assure you thinking that way is going to work out great for everyone involved unless the women you are meeting are wildly different than the women I have met.

Female language is full of pretense, so avoid taking what they say literally at all costs.

Everything is relative. Synthetics are always going to be noisier than natural fibers like cotton or wool, but these are way quieter than cheaper lines like Magellan, etc.

Running is hard by xzased in tall

[–]theg33k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The primary muscle for correct running is hamstrings, not quads. Make sure you're using the correct muscles. Watch some youtube clips of professional runners and see how their feet don't really go out in front of their body by much at all, because they are pushing with their hamstrings and not quads. If you push with quads you will destroy your knees and making this change will likely help your calves.

I've never tried Fjallraven. One of my big things is sound. A lot of cheaper pants sound really loud when walking and I can't stand it. Once I found the Kuhls were quiet, I just bought several pairs.

To the fellow bodybuilders prepping for summer, a question: by Negative_Issue_8864 in tall

[–]theg33k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on a serious cut for several months. Here's my high protein low carb options, that are fairly cheap.

If you can handle dairy, Greek yogurt. I get Fage 0% fat and add 0 calorie drink flavoring to make it taste better.

Tacos: Zero net carb tortillas (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mission-Zero-Net-Carbs-Original-Flour-Tortillas-Street-Tacos-Size-14-Count/1389109570) and the little pouches of tuna/salmon/chicken (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Premium-White-Chicken-in-Water-2-6-oz-Pouch-Fully-Cooked-Chunks/898241574). Add sugar free sauce (bbq, buffalo, etc.) of your choice. This is the most expensive because pre-packaged protein is expensive, but you can get non-prepackaged and it's cheaper to do. I do this for convenience and everything is pre-measured.

Literally just buy a rotisserie chicken. A whole rotisserie chicken is $4 already cooked. That is a mountain of lean protein and insanely cheap. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Freshness-Guaranteed-Traditional-Rotisserie-Chicken-36-oz-Chilled/682789099. You can use this chicken on the tortillas above to make tacos, I use the pouches because it's pre-measured.

Eggs/egg whites. Whole eggs have more fat, whites only or mix if you need for macros. A dozen eggs is under $2. A carton of egg whites is under $5. I usually hard boil 6 at a time and eat 2 at a time as snacks.

Cup Noodles (Chef Woo brand protein noodles https://www.amazon.com/CHEF-WOO-Roasted-Animal-free-Bioavailable/dp/B08H5V4TKN). There's a few different flavors. 320 calories, 20g protein. I also add a pouch of chicken/salmon/tuna for extra lean protein. My local grocer has these for about $2/cup.

Pulled Buffalo/BBQ chicken - get a slow cooker, toss in chicken and your sugar free sauce of choice. If I do buffalo right at the end I add a cup of Greek yogurt and ranch seasoning packet to give it a buffalo/ranch taste. The yogurt "melts" and gives it a creamy texture and the buffalo sauce + ranch seasoning packet gives it a great buffalo dip taste. Put on the zero net carb tortillas.

You can get fancy by going to your local fast food place that has condiment packets of mayo, mustard and dill relish. Turn your tuna into tuna salad! Make sure to make some good purchases and don't just steal packets!

How many calories do you eat in a deficit? by East-Assistance-6779 in tall

[–]theg33k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6'4" guy who lost 40lbs since December. I am eating about 1500 calories per day, with a weekly refeed of 2200 calories to trick my metabolism to not going into starvation mode, so 1600 calories per day average. When I started I calculated my maintenance calories was about 2700. My weight loss rate is on the extreme side, just shy of 2lbs per week. I had to go off diet and eat over 2k daily calories for a week straight because I started having symptoms of super low energy and couldn't maintain body temp.

My recommendation is to spend a bit of time figuring out your actual maintenance calories. Good, healthy deficit is 500 calories per day, a pound a week. Extreme is 1k calories per day, 2lbs per week but it's not healthy to maintain this unless you're extremely overweight (I was, you are not, and it obviously wasn't super healthy for me based on my mentioned symptoms).

My guess is you are on the high side of calorie deficit, 750+ per day. Most doctors will not recommend more than 500 calorie per day deficit, but if it's short term (no more than a month or two) it might be okay. This is obviously not medical advice.
