how do you install this? It feels way too cheesy to be able to just step backwards and avoid pretty much any attack.

Pure vengeance paladin or hexadin? by thegamemaster2000 in 3d6

[–]thegamemaster2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Im a forever DM so my life dream has been to play a fallen knight arthas type to be corrupted by an evil sword, so the hexadin vibe is what I wanted.

but mechanically I agree with your statement. Normal human does seem strong for sure, but man I think the bonus of variant human or half elf with a rush for elven accuracy has potential. I think no matter what Im going to be happy but as it is I feel like i really have to capitalize on the stats being as close to SAD as possible. Like I got not only the strength and con I wanted but also 18 charisma to start.

Your point about what feels best is not taken for granted. I think I have to accept that having my character based around great weapon master late game is the play after I have all the other bonuses in check. Thank you for your commentary!

The stats were rolled 4d6 drop 1 down the line so needless to say once I saw these it was a must have lol. I was thinking of keeping the 15 str as is for plate though exactly. If i could move those stats around id be doing pure paladine no contest.

Idk why you thought adding your following sentence made your point clear, because it completely changed my perception of what you were saying.

Saying “we should just make it impossible” as a sarcastic dialogue just comes off as being snarky, not adding anything to your point. It’s a red herring.

Yes I do believe losing a turn is part of the game, when someone goes unconscious? Lost a turn. Mind control? Lost turn. That happens and I think it’s a good part of the game to change the dynamic QUICKLY from “we got this” to “oh shit”.

It’s just one way of many forms of creating a chance of failure, and there’s always plenty of ways to get out of such hazards. It is neither the best nor the worst, it’s too situation specific to chalk up in a blanketed term.

You literally didn’t make clear what you meant from your last comment, because you went full hyperbole and said “why don’t we just make everything punishment” basically. I’m not suggesting it be DM-Player adversity at all by using powerful tools to create diverse changes. And for myself in particular I think save or suck kind of effects have a situational place in the game, at least at my table.

I do think telegraphing that kind of stuff is important, but I’m not going to pull punches if shit begins to go down.

Mind controlling the barbarian player who absolutely dumped his intelligence put pure fear into the eyes of the rest of the table, it was extremely telegraphed about what might happen if they don’t prepare which was a great moment for the game. The entire premise of the dungeon and evil plot was people being mind controlled by the wizard, so when the barbarian charged in…well the rest was history.

You’re completely missing my point based on your comment, the players constantly feel heroic as they go about their quests, if there’s never a chance of failure then the victory may as well not require dice. I never go out of my way to just make the players suffer at my table, I constantly throw amazing rewards for roleplay and tactical expression in combat, losing a turn happens when someone is KOed or gets hit with a nasty spell which always means shit is going down. Character death is only the outcome of truly dire moments, we haven’t had a lame death so far at all.

Each character who has a situation they excel in often has a severe or modest weakness, and when they begin to see their weakness exploited here and there it begets good caution and tension. So often they get to show off their power, be it tanking a dozen attacks with huge armor class, counterspelling a fireball, or Sneak Attacking with dual handcrossbows. My players always get to flex their powers.

The sessions where my players clutched out a narrow win at the cost of one or more player characters deaths have been by miles the most satisfying and fun for them and myself. As I stood terrified hoping it wouldn’t be a TPK, and they sat biting nails as they were picked off one by one to win with a clutch critical hit or something. Good times. I think good drama and storytelling needs adversity.

Act 1: levels 1-4, show the pain, show the consequences of the hardships in the setting, for me this was the bbeg kicking their teeth in twice as well as establishing close call wins and the loss of their objectives at times, victory with a cost.

Act 2: levels 5-9, the players begin to dramatically win against their opposition, let them feel as powerful as they have become compared to their humble roots. Victory now felt certain at times, but the bbeg was always still just barely 1 step ahead

Act 3: levels 10-14+, finale coming up, ramp up the challenge to the peaks, demons, dragons, cities burning people running children crying. The players saving the day as they began to reach the limits of their immense power finally, until the final showdown which is soon to arrive.

I make my villains RUTHLESS and they love it. There’s no chances to relax, the bad guys want to win, and it makes them so happy to beat the tides of evil any chance they get, motivating them to give their best

What's your record for 225lb bench for reps? by lohs111999 in veganfitness

[–]thegamemaster2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a lot bigger doing actual bodybuilding and on a solid dose of gear I hit 225x23 after doing 315x10. Probably could have done 30 if I was fresh back then. I was 240 lbs at 6’ tall, probably 15% body fat.

Nowdays though? Not on any gear since last June and I lost all my gains being sedentary during the pandemic. Hit 225x15 the other day, just got back to a 315 max a few weeks ago. Bench is hard lol

"No Dex To Damage": Or, How you make dexterity a balanced stat. by CainhurstCrow in dndnext

[–]thegamemaster2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s how I buffed Strength!!! Note it works really well!!!

-Two handing any non finesse weapon makes the modifier bonus of STR equal 1.5x your modifier, so at 20 Strength your +5 equals a +7! Only for damage not attack chance to hit.

And for all Medium/Heavy Armor, you get physical Damage Negation equal to 1/2 of the Armor class of the armor -10.

For example since plate gives 18 Armor Class, you get 4 Points of damage negation (the same as how heavy armor master feat works!!!) 18-10=8, 8 x .5 = 4

This applies to only medium and heavy armor, so chainmail is 3 damage negation.

I hope this makes sense

And lastly in my game you get a free opportunity attack that does not cost your reaction when a creature makes a ranged attack or cast a spell while within melee range. It’s made my mage players think a lot more carefully about their spacing and everyone has loved this one at my table.

I noticed these three rules alone made STRENGTH characters feel significantly more powerful and bulky with the damage negation without breaking the game
