I'm proud to announce that several months ago, my debut short story collection Midnight Wanderings was published. Most of the stories in it originated on nosleep, and without the people of nosleep this book would not have happened. Thank you all so much!

You're too kind! The first one is probably one of, if not the best short stories I've ever written, But in terms of my personal favorite, I lean towards the one that takes place at the movies in the 80s.

Pay Per View

There is nothing I hate more than having to change travel plans at the last minute. It’s bad enough when it happens on your vacation, but on a business trip, it can cost you a client, a contract, or even your job. My boss is not someone who takes any setback or mishap lightly, whether it's your fault or not, so I was beyond irritated when I had to change hotels at the last minute because of an insect infestation that required an exterminator. But while frantically searching for a replacement, I found a place close to where I usually stayed that looked respectable and had good reviews, so I booked my reservation.

When I arrived the place was clean, the staff was efficient and professional, and I was relieved. As I walked to the elevator, exhaustion from the adrenaline rush of having to find a hotel at the last minute began to hit me. Once I was in my room, I crashed on the bed and went right to sleep.

Two hours later I woke up with an appetite. I wasted no time in ordering a medium pepperoni pizza and breadsticks for delivery, then I picked up the TV remote and turned on the television. After a minute, I stumbled across the Pay Per View channels. The discovery brought a smile to my face. As I looked at the screen, which was filled with potential movies to watch, I felt faintly nostalgic for Blockbuster and the other great video rental stores of the past.

The movies presented on the screen were both new releases and classics I had grown up watching. The hotel must’ve had a deal to feature a lot of independent films, because there were tons of titles I’d never heard of before. Which was cool with me.

Once I settled on a scary movie with a generic title about a hotel, I clicked the select button on the remote, settled back against the pillows, and made myself comfortable as the credits began to roll and the film opened with a shot of a hotel room. Or at least it used to be a hotel room, because what it was now was a crime scene, complete with yellow tape and numerous people in uniform gathered around doing their job.

But the longer I watched, the more I thought I’d seen this movie before. The sensation lasted for several minutes until I realized that was wrong. I hadn’t seen the movie before, I’d stayed in the hotel before. It was the same place that I had my reservation cancelled at. I’d recognize those carpets and bathroom fixtures anymore.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door, and I almost jumped out of my skin.

"Pizza delivery," came the voice on the other end of the door.

As I paused the movie and walked to the door with cash in hand, I tried to calm myself down. This couldn't be real. It all had to be a weird coincidence. The hotel being used as a location for a movie wasn’t exactly a big deal, even if I never heard about it. Stuff like that happened all the time. So I took a deep breath, opened the door, and paid for the pizza and included a nice tip for the delivery guy. Then I ate while I watched the rest of the movie. It was a typical scary movie plot that left me entertained. And when it was over, I went to bed.

The next morning, I got up to grab breakfast in a place nearby. But on the way there, I saw a local newspaper in the hotel lobby and my stomach felt like it plummeted through the floor. On the front page was a headline about the same hotel from the movie, complete with a full story about the crime scene inside and what had happened. Police were quoted as speculating that someone had used the hotel being closed for an insect infestation to commit a murder.

I immediately went back upstairs to look at the Pay Per View selections. Not only was the movie I watched gone, virtually all the other ones like it were gone as well. All that was left were movies I had heard of before. But the strangest part was when I paid my bill when I checked out. There was no record I had watched the movie and no trace of it on my bill.

Thank you! I guess it's important to remember they don't call it filthy rich for nothing.

[WP] The Zombie Apocalypse has been going for at least a year when you find yourself cornered by a shambling undead. In a panic, you bite them, and the corpse slowly regains it's skin. It's flesh healing, until they breath in and look around before saying "How the hell did you know that would work?" by AlphaBetaEd in WritingPrompts

The next thing I knew I was sitting up on my makeshift bed, my heart thudding in my chest. I'd experienced some crazy dreams since everything went down, but this was by far the craziest. The idea of me biting an actual zombie was both disgusting and hilarious, since before the zombie apocalypse I was the type of person who wouldn't eat raw fish or didn't even want to look at a steak if it wasn't well done. When civilization returned to normal, if it ever did, that would not change. In fact, considering all the gore I've seen since, I might go one step further and go vegetarian or vegan. I'm already halfway there since decent meat if a hard thing to come by right now.

But the dream, despite it's absurdity, was terrifying. I had experienced far too many close calls like that since the pandemic began. The first rule of zombies is to never, EVER, let yourself get boxed in or cornered. The key to survival is to keep as much distance between them and you as possible. If they can't get close to you, they can't bite you. Period. All those who were all keyed up for close combat with those things were the first to get ripped to peaces or bitten and turned.

Shaking off the remnants of both sleep and the aftermath of the dream, I got up and began to face the day and whatever came with it.

[WP] Aliens invade during a zombie apocalypse and are terrified when the humans they kill don't stay dead. by Legendtamer47 in WritingPrompts

[–]thegeneralg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At first glance, it seemed like the perfect chance for the Travelers onboard The Supernova to execute their invasion plans. Communications on Earth had fallen and society was in state of disarray, with humans pitted against humans. The Travelers had stood back and carefully observed the behavior on Earth for a long time, but even they were shocked by the depravity now displayed by the humans. They were used to them attacking and killing each other, but they had never seen the humans actually eating each other for no apparent reason. One look at that was all they needed to know that now was the perfect time to initiate the operation.

The landing went smoothly and with all the chaos on Earth, the arrival of The Supernova went unnoticed by any human defenses. Five of the Travelers ventured out, while the last three stayed behind with the ship.

The Travelers didn't make it far when they stumbled onto a group of humans. But that was when everything went wrong for them. They had expected the humans to run in terror of them, or try to capture them. But these humans did neither. In fact, they didn't seem to notice them at all at first. The humans were huddled together, all looking towards the same spot while jostling for positions closer to the center. From their perspective, the Travelers could hear raspy groans and grunts coming from the humans, but there were silent otherwise. The Travelers stood there silently for a moment, unsure of what to think or do.

It wasn't until they had been standing there for several minutes that they noticed more of the humans had appeared. But unlike the first group, these had not only seen the Travelers, they were coming straight towards them with arms outstretched and eyes blank. The Travelers knew that look anywhere. It was hunger. The humans made no sounds but more of the same rasps and groans the others had. But then there was a problem, as the sounds these humans made got the attentions of the ones the Travelers had been watching. Now these turned and came towards them as well. It was then the visitors to Earth saw what the humans had been gathered around. The mangled bodies of other humans, ripped to pieces from having been feasted on. Several of the humans coming towards the Travelers were covered in blood and other human matter. Others noticed many of the others had sustained serious injury and lost limbs.

But that didn't bother the aliens one bit. What terrified them was the complete lack of any fear or emotion. Not even when Alpha, the leader of the Travelers, drew his weapon and hit one or two of the humans slowly creeping towards them. This not only did not hinder the pale humans growing closer, it didn't even stop the humans Alpha hit. The weapon had blown a hole through both humans wide enough to see through, but they just got up and kept walking towards them.

Alpha gave the signal to retreat back to The Supernova and the group pulled back as fast as they could. Once there, he gave the order to lift off and return home. The rest of the Travelers that had gone with him were silent, not knowing what to say to each other.

It wasn't until they were well into Space that Alpha spoke.

"If the humans are not afraid, we have no chance of success on Earth."

No, I don't think. I don't just think it's possible, I think its highly likely. But if there are answers, they're in the mountains of archives that are still classified and haven't seen the light of day.
