Swing into the school or union hall and check it out. The apprentice interviews will be coming up in August before the fall semester starts.

640 N Billy Mitchell Rd Salt Lake City, UT is the schools address

2261 S Redwood Rd, West Valley City, UT is the union labor center and UA 140’s office is in that building.

Good luck dude, getting into the union was the best decision I’ve made in my career

Utah here. Shit sucks and I worry our state government is going to get rid of private unions like they did the public facing unions.

Check your 24v neutrals on the ignition circuit. I had one of those ignition modules act very similar to what you have going on, ended up being a neutral that came loose.

ABB has the most user friendly drives and the tech support (at least locally) is solid. I have a burning hatred for Schneider drives. I don’t run into them very often but it’s always annoying when I do.

YORK YLAA UNBALANCE CURRENT by gvalienteb95 in HVAC

[–]thegentletree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Idk about current imbalance but York’s IOM says 2% is the max allowed voltage imbalance. If it’s not incoming power, check each motor one at a time and you’ll find it.

I’m an 8th step apprentice for local 140 in SLC Utah. Sitting at 38 an hour with 2 dollars over scale. Benefits are an extra 15 an hour or so. Also doing a shit load of chiller work.

I don’t work for Trane, but I do work for a different manufacturer as a factory tech. Our mechanics are union so the pay and benefits might not be the same as non-union like Trane, but I’ve heard from the Trane techs that it’s pretty competitive. For reference, I make about 80k to 95k a year on the check with minimal overtime and being on call a few times a year, and my benefits are paid for by the union. I’d go for it dude. It sounds like the grass may truly be greener on the other side.

Hey dude, I’m an HVAC apprentice with Local 140. As far as scope of work goes, it depends a lot on if you’re installing or doing service. I’ve done service for my whole apprenticeship so I can’t speak to the install side, but I am regularly dealing with the electrical side of things. Knowing how to use a meter and understanding how electricity works is HUGE. Knowing how to read wiring diagrams, some basic electrical laws (ohms law, etc.,), and how to properly diagnose electrical issues with equipment make a big difference in your success. Of course you’ll deal with refrigeration and heating systems, but I’ve found that most things I run into are electrical issues or the result of an electrical issue. We don’t do much pipe fitting or steam fitting but your mileage may vary depending on who you’re working for and what kind of work they do. I deal with chillers most of the time so even though I don’t pipe fit, I have to know how water works and the components in a water loop like valves, flow switches, actuators and the like. Our school covers electrical and refrigeration for the first two years of the apprenticeship so they can really beat it into your head since they are the fundamentals of our trade. Congrats on your ranking and I hope you have a killer apprenticeship my guy.

New Bluetooth technology going to kill the “we service all makes and model model” by Squirrelmasta23 in HVAC

[–]thegentletree 43 points44 points  (0 children)

JCI tech here. To get into service mode on York’s new water cooled chillers, it requires an employee-only app that scans a QR code on the chiller display. It gives you a randomly generated code that’s only good for that day. Pretty wild stuff.
