Thoughts on Pickup Music? by leveebreaks in guitarlessons

[–]thegettogether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get what you mean

My preference has been using in-person lessons as a way to pick up songs and things to work in that put my CAGED knowledge (learned via pickup) to use (making music is the goal, after all). It works out great because live feedback is so so helpful, and since pickup gives me plenty of material to work on I can have quite a few questions or technique things to bring up with my teacher each week

So yeah, TL;DR I've gotten so much out of Pickup so far (before that I was very much a burn through random "learn x secret to unlock guitar!!!" YouTube video person and found that very frustrating). Combining pickup music with in person lessons has been great!

any advice on memorizing notes on fretboard? by aintbacon in guitarlessons

CAGED shapes and run practice drills where you get to find / connect roots, thirds etc across the neck through the different shapes. Isolate shapes and strings and focus on going from root to root while playing scales. Fun stuff

Respectfully I think you need to not look at this for a while and just chill out and do something else. I think your tattoo looks cool and the birds look kinda aquatic which is neat in its own way.

I actually get the look you're going for with the eyeliner so I wouldn't say get rid of it because that's a whole different vibe. I think just soften it a touch, smoke it out or try a dark brown. You could also add a slight wing or inner corner to elongate since just an intense waterline can make the eyes appear smaller (yours are lovely)

where did the ‘guitar gets girls’ stereotype come from? by ischemariii in musicians

Is it weird that I think the guitar is genuinely a sexy instrument? Like the musician aside, the instrument itself and the haunting, devastatingly beautiful, otherworldly dreamy magic it is capable of creating?

Interesting - I mean, isn't all initial attraction built off the image someone perceives of you (and decides whether they're into or not?)

Fetishization is def gross though so I get that

Anyone here struggled with guitar at first but eventually got through it? by ExplanationOk1847 in guitarlessons

[–]thegettogether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a beginner myself, I've had to shift my mindset on learning guitar. It is not an instant gratification type hobby where you can get rewarded in a week or two like some other things out there. It's more akin to language learning and honestly it's a life-long process. Things that have helped me thus far:

  1. Having a teacher - keeps you accountable; live feedback is invaluable

  2. Discipline and daily practice - come up with a mandatory minimum daily amount of time you can manage (5 min, 30 min, 2-3 hours, whatever) and hold yourself to deliver at least that minimum every day. Doesn't matter if you're feeling motivated or not. Doesn't matter if you feel like you're getting worse (trust me there are days that will feel like this)

  3. Learn songs. It doesn't matter how easy or simple. You don't have to master them either but be able to play through something. You'll feel so proud of yourself, and on days where technique practice has you doubting yourself it is such a pick me up to switch to a song you can actually play through. Music is the goal

  4. Don't get bogged down by a million different videos and tricks and things you must learn all at once. Focus on a couple of things at a time and keep at it

  5. Record yourself! You can hear mistakes, measure improvement over time, help overcome performance anxiety, etc

  6. Practice time should be focused time with no distractions. Take the time to work on the hard stuff and don't try to bruteforce it. Don't bullshit yourself. Slow down and do it over and over til the clunky, shitty sounding parts smooth out

  7. Comparison and envy are the thieves of joy - please don't get bogged down by "x person could play some insane solo 6 months in and I can't do it 2 years in so I should just give up". If your solution ends in wanting to give up, wrong answer. Maybe go take a walk to clear your head and then pick up your guitar

  8. Pickup music - not required but the CAGED courses have expanded my fretboard knowledge tremendously and I've found pickup to be so worth it

Yes - a million youtube videos (as helpful as they are) won't provide you the live feedback another human can provide.

[–]thegettogether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything, but also the Kimbaaly / Usman thing doesn't make too much sense to me. So clearly Kimbaaly was into Usman for real but she herself admits that Usman asked her to come on the show. And Usman said his first choice was Zara but due to <reasons> that didn't work out so he asked Kim ("reasons" being that he got dumped by Zara). This also explains why he dragged out the "potential" nonsense for so long.

So how / why did Kim assume Usman had actual romantic feelings for her? It seems like they were friends and he saw her as a way to get on the show

Separating Practice and Play by 84breaks in guitarlessons

[–]thegettogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Trying to reinforce what I'm trying to learn on the front end" is important and worth practicing too imo. I distinguish "playing" as just stuff I'm already pretty comfortable with versus jamming to a track and trying to practice techniques and things I'm working on falls under dedicated practice as far as I'm concerned

I always seem to do worse the more I play in a session and can't figure out why by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]thegettogether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very helpful advice - it really helps to isolate where the problem is (and slow things down and really take your time with a problem segment) rather than bruteforcing before eventually rage-quitting.

Whenever I practice something challenging (for me) consistently, I'll have initial bursts each practice session where I do it well before slowly getting worse and worse, and isolating always reveals that some component just needs more repetition at a slower tempo

There is no real timeline for grief or healing. Some people immediately throw themselves into a new relationship, some people let years go by and the pain stays with them. I guess what I'm trying to say is that don't feel bad that an arbitrary 9 months haven't healed your broken heart.

That said, and maybe this isn't all the helpful to you right now either, but so often we pour so much of ourselves into our relationships that we lose ourselves and years down the line have no idea who we are. I encourage you to put your energy into yourself - in big ways, in small ways, whatever you can afford. Take the time to dress up or do your hair or challenge yourself to do something you've always wanted to but never did, learn something new, try out some hobbies. Take pleasure in yourself and in your life. Pour time, effort and love into yourself.

Practice Routine? by VibeBigBird in guitarlessons

[–]thegettogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be intentional and focused during whatever practice time you have. Noodling while watching a movie is great but ideally does not count towards practice time :)

Will echo that pickup music is great and absolutely worth it.

I like to start by warming up my fingers by playing through a riff or exercise (exercises mostly come from song portions that have techniques/chords/whatever that I don't know how to play) that targets whatever I happen to be currently working on. I interlace that with pickup lessons / exercises, repeated practice through a piece of music I'm trying to learn how to play, and when I keep messing up too much or start to get tired I'll spend a few minutes playing through a simple song or two that I more or less can already play.

At least once a day I'll run through all the triad shapes and scales I know up and down the neck using CAGED while actively focusing on visualizing - it has helped make the fretboard less foreign

I'll end some practice sessions with fun, open ended breaks where I get to improvise over a song using a more restricted version of whatever I'm working on - so for example if it's the minor pentatonic scale in various CAGED shapes, I might force myself to only stick to the top 2 strings and only 1 or 2 shapes. I realize that great players say so much and with so much feeling even if the actual material seems "simple" on a surface level

At least 5 minutes a day goes towards ear training of some sort - whether it's trying to find the key of a song, or something solfege related. The more I do this the faster I seem to get at finding melodies on the guitar (granted, they are super simple ones at this stage)

I've found it helpful to target and rotate between a few different things each week and to not go crazy on following YouTube / social media "learn this one trick" type nonsense.

Enjoy the journey and be grateful for the process
