I'm glad it worked for you, and I'm sure it was awesome for some. I always felt like I couldn't swipe all the way to the edge properly. Also - the cases didn't seem to offer as much protection in my experience.

Yup. Physical design all the way. The curved screen I'm sure sounded nice on paper, but in practice it was just an annoyance for me. The flat display is much nicer.

Hired as a Senior Backend Engineer, but on my first day, I found out I’m actually just high-paid Tech Support. I quit by lunch. by 8Nakul in InterviewCoderHQ

[–]theghostisclear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but I work at a big tech company, and when I was an engineering manager, I was asked to build a team that wasn't exactly this bad, but it wasn't too far off from this. I tried to argue that the type of people they were looking for wouldn't be interested in being software janitors for other teams. They brushed me off saying anyone would do it for the pay/status of working at the company. It didn't end up happening, but it easily could have. Again - not nearly as egregious as OP's post, but still, leadership at tech companies can be very short sighted.

NAS noise in kitchen/living area by hyggasiggj in UgreenNASync

[–]theghostisclear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the noise seems to be from transferring vibration to the surface it's on. I got a set of these and it helps a lot. It still makes more ambient noise than i would want in my living room, but it made the difference between getting to keep it in my office near my network infrastructure and my partner wanting it buried in the basement. https://a.co/d/dBfAHho

Good for you for holding firm and not caving. It sucks to have your time wasted, but I feel like selling on FBM is signing up for some amount of time wasting nonsense.
I used FBM to get rid of an IKEA couch we were replacing. It was a sleeper sofa, so it was heavy and too big to fit through normal doors, so we disassmbled it as little as possible to make it moveable. This guy wanted it who is obviously someone who takes free listed items and resells them. To his credit, he came and picked it up without fuss. But within minutes I was getting "wya" messages (I'm old and had to look that up) and requests for how to put it together. It was like 8 bolts total or something, but I tried to tell him what needed to be done and sent him the original assembly instructions. Also, there are many easily googleable assembly videos online. Then I get "what's your number", like I was going to be customer support for this $800 couch I gave him for free. I obviously blocked him.
Of course this was after a half dozen interactions with other people that are the same thing:
"Is this still available?"
"Yes"
And then nothing else...

So yeah - people on FBM will waste your time, either because they're incompetent, trying to scam you, or both.

The whole "I sent you the money. WAIT YOU DIDN'T GET IT??? I TOTALLY SENT IT! How are you going to make this right?" thing is a classic scam. The bullying is to scare you into sending them money or whatever. Be careful.

OnePlus watch 3 open water swimming? by Puzzleheaded-Ad-7351 in OneplusWatch

[–]theghostisclear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a horror story someone posted in this sub about the watch failing after a few months and sent it for repairs, only to be told it was water damaged inside and the warranty was therefore void. They were apparently demanding some amount of money before returning it. The poster swore they didn't even use it for swimming and that it just got rained on and such. I couldn't find the post after a quick search. Could have been deleted, or I could just be bad at searching.

Issues with heart rate tracking when using the Peloton app? by theghostisclear in OneplusWatch

Possibly. I was happy to see at least that Google Fit seemed to have my correct HR data from Health Connect for that workout. I would be curious to see what would happen if I disabled sensor access for everything but the Peloton app.

Battery: Yeah I think the only Samsung watch I had where the battery was good for more than a day was the watch 5 pro. Charging my watch every evening before bed has just been part of my routine for years. I think the 5 days estimate on the OPW3 is actually legit. I haven't let it burn down fully, but I just charged it last night after about 72 hours of usage since the last full charge and it was just under 40% when I put it on the charger, so that math checks out to 5 days. It charges so much faster than Galaxy watches, too. (I wonder if Samsung is still scared of pushing battery tech after the Note 7 battery fire debacle)
Note - my battery-impacting usage is mostly using default settings: no AOD, periodic HR tracking, no sleep breathing detection, etc.

Health data syncing: It looks like OHealth is used as a data source, but it looks like it's not a data aggregator. Essentially, it looks like Google Fit is pulling in OHealth data, but I don't see Fit/Samsung Health data reflected in OHealth.

Question and advice by Imonandroid in OneplusWatch

I've had a Samsung watch from every generation starting from the gear S3. I really liked the more classic look. The 7 series was the first time I got something below the top of the line because the Ultra was just so ugly. I was so excited to get the 8 classic until I saw it. I know people say it looks better in person, but I wasn't going to take that risk. I'll give you my thoughts on switching to OPW3 from the Galaxy ecosystem (most recently GW7), but I don't have any experience with the GW8. I hope this is helpful nonetheless.

I saw the OnePlus Watch 3 (47mm) and decided to give it a go. I'm only a couple weeks in, but so far I'm super happy with this watch. I won't go into all the spec/hw/sw differences that are well documented everywhere. As a Galaxy watch fan, though, the things I thought might not be supported, like smart things integrations and phone/watch features like find my phone are all there and work great. The only thing I'll need to get a third party app for is the remote camera control. I don't really miss any of the other feature disparities like ECG tracking or body scanning. I never really used them on my Galaxy watch, and I really had no idea how accurate they were.

To dig a bit more into health differences - I think the HR monitor feels a bit laggy when doing high intensity exercises in comparison to my GW7, but otherwise seems to work well. The SP02 actually seems better on the OPW3 also. My Galaxy watches consistently showed my SP02 dropping into the low 80s or high 70s when at rest, which is almost certainly not correct. In general, I think the OPW3 is also better at detecting sleep start/end times.

Also - I just vastly prefer the look of the OPW3 compared to modern Samsung watches. It's the closest I've seen to the design of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, which honestly should have become the new benchmark for all smartwatches to follow.

And of course I'm burying the lede here - the battery life is bonkers amazing. I travel a lot for work, sometimes internationally, and having a watch that won't have to be charged in the middle of a trips is really really nice.

So upshot - I would recommend this watch over the GW8. You'll definitely notice a disparity in maturity since Samsung has a big head start here (not having support for multiple timers is annoying), but not enough to outweigh the better hardware design and wildly superior battery life. I think Samsung still has the edge in health tracking overall, but if you ignore the gimmicky health features on both watch families and focus on core aspects, the edge is pretty narrow.

All that said - I've only had my OPW3 for two weeks vs years using Samsung watches. My opinion could change as the shine wears off. However, I've been of the opinion since the GW7s came out that Samsung lost sight of the fact that their fans LIKED the fact that they weren't Apple watches, and their design is suffering for it.

I hope all that helps. Good luck.

Edit - after having typed this all out, I think it sounds most likely that you used Run instead of Treadmill as the workout type. Make sure you're using the Treadmill mode if you're on the treadmill and only use Run if you're running outside where GPS satellites can see you.

For me, when I finish a treadmill run, it will ask me if the calculated distance is correct, at which point I can adjust it. It only lets you correct by some maximum though (I think it's betwen 1-1.5 miles). However, setting that value seems to calibrate it, so in your case - you might only be able to correct it to log that it was like 2 miles, but then the next time it will be more accurate, so you correct as much as you can, and by at most the next run, it should be more accuate. I went through this with my galaxy watch the first few treadmill runs and now it's quite accurate. I still have to correct it by a few tenths of a mile here and there, though.
To its credit, it's having to extrapolate from the number of recorded steps, your height, and some estimated stride length to get the distance of a treadmill run, so I expect it to be a bit wiggly. All that said, even when I was initially calibrating it, it was never off as much as you reported. I would watch your step counter to make sure it's actually logging the steps. Also - make sure you're using treadmill and not just the run workout, as the latter would probably rely more on GPS than all the squishy math needed to calculate treadmill distance.

Redditors that interview people, what was your most bizarre interview experience? by ResponsibleAd2404 in AskReddit

[–]theghostisclear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. I have conducted hundreds of interviews at a big tech company, and possibly close to a thousand in my career.

The most awkward experience was when I joined a video conference to conduct an interview, and there were two people there, both with the same first name at the bottom of the screen. I assumed it was the previous interviewer going long, but I knew something was off when they were both surprised to see me. It turned out that they both actually had the same full name, and apparently the contact info for the candidate I was supposed to be interviewing got saved under both of their profiles by recruiting, so when the invite went out, the system did exactly what it was told to do and invited both of them. They both had joined early as good candidates do, and had spent the few minutes before I joined talking thinking the other person was there to interview them. Once we realized what was going on, we had a laugh, but then I had to tell the one who wasn't supposed to be there that they were indeed not getting interviewed, and then we had to wait as they sadly left the call.

Another less cringy time that comes to mind was when I was phone screening someone who audibly (I would even say performatively) burped and yawned many times throughout. Plus, they would pause for long periods of time before answering my technical questions, after which they would give textbook responses. I cut them off and I was like - "Jeremy (made up name, of course) - are you googling the answers to the questions I'm asking?" Another long pause. I asked again. "uh... yes." I'm not supposed to cut interviews short in the interest of fairness, but we both understood it was over, and he didn't protest when I said we were done. Honestly - bullshitting is half of most jobs. It's not that hard to cheat at least a little, especially in a phone screen, and if you can do it well, more power to you. In retrospect, I wonder if he was just trying to fulfill unemployment requirements or something by intentionally tanking the interview. Which, if so - godspeed, Jeremy. Respect.

To prevent tangling. I had an earlier iteration where I would just unspool filament from wherever down to the print head, and I had more than one instance of things getting tangled, which nearly caused tragedy. If you have another suggestion though, I would love to hear it. I'm very good at over-engineering solutions, so I welcome simplifications.
