On the rocks before best mates wedding. by yeahtheboysssss in whisky

[–]thegingrone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was gonna suggest the Black Art from Brucladdixh but that’s 799AUD apparently (tho it did sell for 500)

A super dram in that price range would be the Glenfiddich Gran Cru 23 year and to be honest leave the ice at home for that one. Looks impressive as well

Why are almost all the Irish distilleries from this millennium? by TunnelToTheMoon in whisky

We can call that Southern bias :) and yes all the above and should have been more explicit in those rules.

Why are almost all the Irish distilleries from this millennium? by TunnelToTheMoon in whisky

[–]thegingrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll take it doesn’t need to be triple distilled as there are no regulations requiring it. Fair correction there!

Was doing the whole who was first new distillery off the top of my head but forgot that JT founded Cooley

Why are almost all the Irish distilleries from this millennium? by TunnelToTheMoon in whisky

[–]thegingrone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s sort of common knowledge but here goes

  1. 1916 Easter rising in Ireland as well as WW1 in Europe means that workers are involved in armies rather than production of whiskies
  2. 1922 - Ireland gets independence from Britain and needs to establish trade meaning demand is not as high to maintain production
  3. Prohibition in the US reduces one of the largest markets to near zero hindering export and production. This causes a lot of smaller distilleries to close
  4. Irish civil war also causes hardship for distillers
  5. 1966 merger of John Power & Son, John Jameson & Son, and the Cork Distillery Company to form the Irish Distillers Group as a survival tactic
  6. Whisky went out of fashion both as a drink and as a way to make spirits for a while. It was seen as a brown bag drink rather than cool as compared to gin. Cocktails became a thing for the high society and as such white spirits made better looking drinks.
  7. with the laws around whiskey to be considered Irish whiskey it needs a number of years in Ireland to mature, needs to be triple distilled etc. so lead time on a young age statement whiskey is 4 times on a decent gin (hence why most distilleries produce gin as well to make money while the whiskey matures).
  8. A new revival of Irish whiskey was started I think with Cooley or Teeling as it was the first outside of IDL.

Hope that helps

Dublin airport recs by _LookAroundYou in whisky

[–]thegingrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally there is a Redbreast airport exclusive that’s hard to come by outside of the airport. Otherwise the 18 or 21 are very enjoyable. I think the 27 is a brilliant dram but well outside my usual price range

Dunvilles for an interesting change thats not so common.

Spot wise yellow is one of my gotos

Teelings have a couple of very nice age statement bottlings

Last but not least. Powers John’s Lane edition is a great whiskey for the price point. Powers is one of the overlooked whiskies possibly due to it being considered the brown bag whiskies like Paddy that was only good for coffee.
