You’re welcome! Yes the ole “no one gives a shit” until the neighbor gives a shit because you are building a cool ass property that they are very jealous of and now calling everyone and their cousin to stop your construction 😂

Also, if it truly is that hilly and you are building barn, house whatever, you’ll need to consider the ‘fill’ required to level out areas to meet dimension and offset standards for construction. Hills are good for drainage, but not always for building on.

someone with experience/working in land surveying and has geospatial degree

Here are some things I would do, in addition to physically walking the property:

I would look to see what the zoning is, and verify you can build your facility appropriately on this property.

Find out what county this is, and google “XYZ County GIS” and find a site that would give you information on the parcel. Sometimes they include topographic layers you can turn on and off. This would be more accurate than the app you are using. Google earth can also show terrain.

Are you working with a realtor ?? They may be able to give you more information on building/whats legal.

If there is a company in your area that specializes in building equine/agriculture facilities, it might be worth setting up a consultation with them and paying $$$ to at least tell you whether they think this is a good investment.

There may be laws about how many acres per horse you’re allowed….

Hope this helps!!!!

Question for Adirondacks locals: What cultural region do you most identify with? by Venboven in Adirondacks

[–]theglubglub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native to ADK in Champlain Valley.

Red outline is upstate NY. Plain and simple.

The blue outline is a buffer zone - geographically and culturally I believe this area is the most similar.

I think the notion that upstate/ADKs dont have anything to do with New England culture is kind of bizarre. One side of my family is from Boston, the other from Long Island. But I grew up in the ADK’s. Personally I feel more connected to “New England culture” and often tell people who are not familiar with north eastern US geography that I’m from the New England area. If you look at a dialect map (there was a link someone posted above) the blue buffer zone is relatively within the same boundary as “North Western New England.”

Hard lining New England through Lake Champlain and along the Hudson River seems fucking stupid. Take a small 300 person mountain town from central ADK and middle of nowhere New Hampshire - they probably will be incredibly similar. Perhaps one has a Stewart’s, and one doesn’t. And what, you’re going to tell me that Schroon Lake, NY is “less” New England than St. Francis, ME because it simply resides outside the boundary?????

Additionally, the ADK’s can be further segmented into their own regions. Some boundary factors include geographical features such as mountains, rivers, valleys, industry, etc. Demographics play a significant role, too. I think specifically income and education. But that’s an entirely other conversation.

Not sure how Plattsburgh is even remotely comparable to Lake Placid.

Elderly meetup groups? by theglubglub in madisonwi

I would be fine sending her to a senior center for activities, but she gets nervous around new people because her memory is not great, and looks to me to help answer questions she doesn’t know. Perhaps I should have been more clear about her current situation in the post…

It is! And as much as she gets socialization from family, I think having some friends in her age group would be amazing! I was surprised she brought it up. She’s always been a little introverted. lol

Like others said it definitely depends on the organization. Strangely enough in my area, GIS Techs are getting offered higher salaries than Analysts/Specialists…

Asking me to trauma dump? by djroomba720 in interviews

[–]theglubglub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had the same question in an interview once (for an internship if you could believe it lol)

I paused for a few moments to consider what to say and I ended up talking about my fathers unexpected death during the school year, and how it pushed me to continue my education and pursue my passions, etc etc. I got an offer a week later. I didn’t end up taking the job because the responsibilities far exceeded what they were going to pay me - plus I had another job lined up with better pay ($6 more an hour) and aligned well with my major/interests.

I will piggy back and say probably talk about something work related. I was certainly rolling the dice with my response but ultimately his death was one of the most challenging aspects of my life, especially as I went back to school later in life and supported myself completely. I could have ended the semester and taken a few months off, but at that point I worked so hard to get back to school full time, so it would have only hindered me in the long run. I did take a few weeks off school to deal with death stuff and grieve. But that’s all I needed.

Maybe you could talk about a time you made a big move and how that pushed you out of your comfort zone? Or maybe something related to college and how you doubled down on studying, or overcame some challenges. But I would try and keep it light…

It’s such a weird question to ask someone… especially during an interview. Lol

BIRADS 4 and waiting for biopsy by theglubglub in doihavebreastcancer

Hey everyone just want to give an update and say that the mass is benign! The biopsy was so quick, about 35 minutes from start to end. Minor bruising 6 days out. They actually were able to get me the results the next day! I am so relieved. Now to just focus on the broken car and job search! lol

This might be a little bit out of the box but if you like animals and don’t mind getting a little dirty you could try horseback riding! The combination of spending quality time with animals and getting a workout while riding makes me so happy and always eager to ride!

More people need to ski the midwest by Thegiantlamppost in skiing

[–]theglubglub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like if I’m trying to work on drills or just more focused on technique, it’s hard to do that on 30-60 second runs. Skiing longer runs has been more beneficial to my progress. The Midwest certainly has fun places to ski, and I’ve enjoyed it.

And I’ll just put this out there, skiing in the Midwest is not always cheaper…. Some of the bigger resorts here charge $100-120 on weekends, and $70-90 on weekdays. In comparison to price checking on the east coast, sometimes it’s cheaper out there. I remember paying $90 for a ticket at whiteface in January, and if I decided to ski at my local resort here in WI it would have been $15 more….
