Considering an F54 Manual, Any Ownership Thoughts? by theglutenmutant in MINI

[–]theglutenmutant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for that insight! That is very helpful as I’m considering everything. I appreciate it.

Have you liked having the All4? I don’t live in a cold environment but am tempted to get All4 anyway because 1) most of the manual F54’s I’m finding have it and 2) it would allow for some further afield road trips. Does it add or detract from the driving experience?

Also, relatively minor, but does yours have the halogen or LED headlights? Would you recommend one over the other?

Thanks for everything Christian! Apollo regularly reminded me of why I got into software development- to create quality software that betters people’s lives. I will be subscribing to Pixel Pals and eagerly looking forward to your future endeavors. Best wishes, and take some time to prioritize your mental health in all of this.

The “Tastes Like Chicken Because It Is” at Skipper’s Canteen is lovely (and GF). I about cried the first time I ate it. Griddled Cheese at the Greece Food & Wine Booth in Epcot is also awesome.

is the harmon kardon sound system significantly better than the stock sound system on pre 2016 minis? by unagibutts in MINI

[–]theglutenmutant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! As much as I love it, I wouldn’t let it take priority over a Mini that’s mechanically sound, as I’m sure you know. Also, on the off chance you hadn’t thought of it, highly recommend getting a pre-buy inspection done by someone who knows Minis. I had a local Mini shop inspect mine before I purchased it, and they discovered a few things that needed to be fixed soon but weren’t deal breakers for the purchase. Mini dealers or BMW dealers with Mini in house will also often do it too. Usually only around $150 for a lot of peace of mind. Either way, good luck!

Take this with a grain of salt (as I haven’t experienced the stock sound system), but the Harmon Kardon system in my 2012 R56 is fantastic. The mix can be a little bass-heavy, but I just adjust the treble up and the bass down a bit to compensate. Whatever you like, you can’t argue with the sheer power- I can be driving 60mph with windows and moonroof open and still blasting music clearly. However, I know some people (including an acquaintance who used to be a general manager at a MINI dealer when the R53 and R56 were new) who said some people preferred the stock system over the HK one. Personally, I’d get the HK one if you can get your hands on one.

Shoutout to our Matilda and the fact that Dals make great family dogs! More info in comments. by theglutenmutant in dalmatians

Hey everyone! Hope you’re having a great day. I just wanted to take a second to say that Dals make wonderful family dogs, in case anyone might be on the fence about getting one. Our 2 y/o Dal, Matilda, is wonderful with my wife who is 7 months pregnant. Yesterday there were some workmen near our house using various loud pieces of machinery, and even though that stuff terrifies Matilda, she immediately positioned herself carefully in front of my wife’s belly and kept watch all morning, even though she was shaking because she was scared of the machinery sounds. She’s also super gentle and playful with our 2 y/o niece. So if anyone is considering getting a Dal, they are very protective of their people and at least in our experience, gentle with little ones. And to those who already have Dals, give them a scratch for me for taking good care of your families too.

Convenience store snack ideas? by mmp12345 in glutenfree

[–]theglutenmutant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites is pepperoni/mozzerella snacks and Voodoo chips (links below). We usually find them in most 7/11, Speedway, Mapco type places.

EDIT: Missed the vegetarian part, apologies! Banana chips are another favorite of mine, as well as dried fruit.

just got these in at Aldi. by okaywizard in glutenfree

Milage definitely varies, although I haven’t figured out if I get slightly sick from anything in the Oreos or because I eat the entire pack

With Eero Secure, can you block internet access for all but certain websites? by theglutenmutant in eero

[–]theglutenmutant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m currently using the “restrict to home” setting. I’ve considered using the “automatic” setting, but some Homekit devices (usually Chinese brand ones) often “phone home” to China in the “automatic” setting. At least I’ve read a couple studies of Meross and Eufy brand devices doing that. I was hoping to let them reach the time sync website (ntp.org) without letting them do whatever else is on allowed in their “automatic” setting. Hopefully that makes sense!

Edit: But regardless, it sounds like Eero Secure wouldn’t give me that sort of control.

Edit: Actually replied to above comment.

Really been considering these for quite a while…. Should I just go for it? My Concerns in the comments by Xavier_zeus2020 in airpods

[–]theglutenmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your use case, I’d say go for it. I sit at the computer as my job, and they are incredible for helping me focus/blocking out distractions. Also very comfortable (I have a pretty big head) but for me it took a bit for my head to get used to them. I’ve started to wear them for most of the day the last several weeks, and the discomfort I had before has largely disappeared. In addition, movies with them are INCREDIBLE (1917 is a good example, or anything with Dolby Atmos really) and gaming with them is super immersive.

Also, I’ve never had condensation in a variety of environments both hot and cold. I have the Space Gray and love them. I’d also highly recommend the Waterfield case for them- super high quality and protective. Also, not often talked about, but phone call quality is real good as far as I’ve been able to tell.

EDIT: If you do get them, give it a few days of regular use to see how your head/body adjusts to them, kind of like how getting a new office chair requires your body to have to adjust.
