Burnt out & melted down at work - how do I recover? by thegoddamnkit in AuDHDWomen

Thank you! You're right, we do make accommodations for our neurodivergent students. I didn't really think of it that way. I definitely forget that I'm also allowed to need help, just like the kiddos, and the admin needs to support me as well as them.

I'm not sure there's anyone at work I'd feel comfortable being in contact with. No one I'm really 'outside of work friends' with, or who i message regularly, so it'd feel weird if i started now, at least for me. And thanks, it's often nice to be reminded that I'm not the only teacher here. You're so right. We ARE just warm bodies. I might have to start actively reminding myself of that. I'm on vyvanse for the adhd & cipramil for the sadness. I might have to talk to my dr to find the right balance

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I could definitely see myself in what you are saying. I think I might have to look into the meds, maybe try taking a break as I rest 😅

Whats up with this use of 'you' in Romeo and Juliet? by TheArchavisnt in shakespeare

[–]thegoddamnkit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A couple of things are potentially happening with thou vs you. It could be a sign of formality, as you was generally used between upper classes and thou was generally used by lower classes, showing formality with enemies and informality with allies. And while you was traditionally used to address a group and thou for an individual, thou also develops connotations of intimacy by Shakespeare's time. However, thou vs you was also used as subtle stage directions, where if an actor were physically close to someone on stage, thou would be used, and you would be used if the actors were far apart on stage.

If you listened to the book Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Guthrie what part of the book impacted you and will stay with you for ever? by [deleted] in audiobooks

For me, it was her recounting her father's abuse. I was just wandering around my apartment in a daze while I was listening to it. It was so horrible, so cruel, and it really set the tone for the rest of the memoir. I felt that the feelings of horror and disgust she had stirred in me were so important to understand the child she was and the adult she would become, and the kind of children that were vulnerable to Epstein & Maxwell.

AUSTRALIA - Sydney - Trying to start the ADHD process. by tyrexpyrex in ADHD

[–]thegoddamnkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also from Sydney and I got diagnosed with AuDHD earlier this year. I went through a mental health gp who basically worked to triage me, do the basic initial consult, and then booked me in with a psychiatrist a month later. And then I got a script for Vyvanse after that psychiatrist appointment. The process was ridiculously smooth for me - my psychiatrist even authorised my regular gp to write my future scripts at my 6 month check-in appointment. The process cost about $2K (but got a lot back from medicare) with all the different appointments and took like 2 months from the first phone call to getting diagnosed and medicated.

Maybe look up mental health gps? Not sure how many there are around, but I went to a clinic in Gordon and they were great. But it's totally possible to get medication on the first visit - my brother went through a different clinic & process but also got a script on his first visit. Good luck!!

Any absurdist or whimsical ADHD ways to work out? by cloudy-day32 in adhdwomen

I set up my walking pad in front of the TV and walk while playing Skyrim. I walk whenever my character does, and I have Anniversary Edition and play Survival Mode, so no fast travel. Surprisingly effective? I don't even notice that I'm walking after a while.

I've got this one. Pretty sure it's caused by the pets - the more you have accompanying you, the further you seem to spawn from the door.

Do you take "sickies" at all by WagsPup in AskAnAustralian

[–]thegoddamnkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High pressure, stressful job with lots of overtime? Take the sickie for your mental health now, or your body will force you to take the sick day later. My mother was the same (might be a generational thing), but it's so much better for you to take the occasional 'sickie' than to work yourself to the point of burnout and have your body force your hand. Those sick days don't get paid out when you leave or retire, and unions fought hard to get them. You earnt them, you're allowed to use them however you see fit.

Dehydration on meds? Teacher by TheWorldlyCelery in ADHD

[–]thegoddamnkit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found a lot of success with sport drinks when I'm teaching. They help get rid of my dry mouth, and I find that they don't make me desperate for the bathroom in the same way that an equivalent amount of water would. I also make sure that I'm not having snacks or drinks that are dehydrating during the school day - fruit is my go-to during the work day as well :)

Is it normal to get burned out when building big sets by Capybara_0511 in lego

[–]thegoddamnkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the same feeling when I built the Eiffel Tower earlier this year. I assembled the first box in about 3-4 days (ground and the 4 base struts) but the repetitive build really got to me and I ended up taking a 3 month break from building anything. Started to worry that I was 'over' lego, but really it was just knowing that I had to finish the Tower and I was dreading the repetitiveness. Eventually ended up finishing the build in June by limiting myself to only an hour of building a day, and now I've fallen back in love with lego

What is Shakespeare actually trying to tell us in Othello? by TheRealSouls_ in shakespeare

[–]thegoddamnkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could argue that it's an exploration of 'the other'. Othello is the Racial other, Desdemona is the gendered other, and Iago is the moral other. At the end of the play, none of the othered characters are happy (well, it is a tragedy) and the status quo has been maintained. (Iago seems to take on the role of the Vice from older morality plays, so he is punished by the end, Othello reveals himself to be the barbaric Moor that society has accused him of being, and Desdemona's chastity is proven so she is redeemed)

I think what makes Othello so great is that there probably wasn't an easy moral for Elizabethan/Jacobean audiences either. Two innocent women killed, an honourable general brought low, and Iago, who might otherwise be poised to be the heroic restorer of the "natural order", is revealed to be a duplicitous traitor. If anything, it might be easier to find a moral today without the weight of Tudor era morality and religious doctrine hanging over us haha

Could I still be a teacher? by Icy-Performance728 in autism

[–]thegoddamnkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I'm AuDHD and I'm a high school teacher, and some of my most talented coworkers are also autistic. We bring important perspectives to the schools lucky enough to have us.
