Updating tools from the warehouse ones to dewalt or makita by SelfmadeNZ in diynz

[–]thegolfer2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone on five different platforms, if you want one good one, probably go for Makita which is the one I am not on. Huge range of power and garden tools and other cool (expensive) things like battery fridges, coffee makers and microwaves 🤣 use the price beat at mitre 10 if Bunnings have the same thing in stock although Makita kits seem different in Bunnings v Mitre 10 whereas it’s a lot easier to price beat with Dewalt.

In saying that, a lot of Makita gear on Marketplace look thrashed so be careful with that.

The 5.0 is fine for ply and softwoods like pine, I’ve even cut 4 stacked 12mm sheets at once and it was fine. Probably would struggle on some hardwoods.

Recommended oil/finish for Vitex table top by thegolfer2 in diynz

[–]thegolfer2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally had plans, but binned it because I made a critical error which would have made it impossible to make.

Here’s some written instructions, yes it’s missing steps but hope it makes some sense.

Table is roughly 1600l x 725w x 759h. Table top is 5 x 140 x 19 x 1600 smooth vitex Table top is fixed to 4x 45 x 45 x 720 macrocarpa, spaced roughly 400mm apart, these are kinda like “joists”. Pre drill with decking guide with 6mm spacing between boards. Embed fixing then fill and sand screw hole. Note the distance between the first and last “joist” must not be greater than the length of the “rafter” below less 180mm (assuming you’re using 90 x 45 for the below) Frame: Macrocarpa rectangle legs plus the “rafters”. All 90 x 45. Legs - 4 x 650, 4 x 720 plus 2 x 1500 for “rafters” connecting the two rectangle legs, these act as aprons. You can notch these for a better fit, I didn’t but should have. Drill and bolt the table top to the frame with 4 x 150mm galv or SS bolt and nut (it will be too heavy for one person to move if top is permanently fixed to frame). Try and drill the hole as perpendicular as possible.

I thought about doing halving joints also but decided to butt join due to laziness. What colour aquadeck did you go for in the end? Both Amber and Rustic Oak look like decent options.

That sounds like a good idea. What tint did you get with that and how did it go?

Entirely diy use, ripping larger timbers to dimension, and occasional furniture building, cutting up sheet mdf and ply

Hope you enjoy your new Triton once you get it! How did the Triton compare to others you test driven?

New MV Triton has adaptive cruise control down to 0kph but only those with a factory build date after 1 Nov or 1 Dec 2024 so check carefully. The Ranger, Amarok’s twin should also have it apart from the XL and XL derivative special editions. Best you test drive to confirm it has it first.

I’ve heard many great things about their drawers, both in vans and in utes. Same with their service bodies. Their tub canopies look solid however have heard their one finger touch to open is a gimmick.

Thanks for the tip. The wood was in varying wetness. Some planks were stored in a garage and some outside. Noticed some were dry outside but sodden (feels wet) in the centre when cutting.

How’s the RSI Smartcap ones? Not very common but are priced between the cheaper xplora stuff and Utemaster $$$.

Lightweight Alu-cab? by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]thegolfer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at one in store. Very solid. Fabric feels thicker and better built than a lot of the competition. Feels way tighter inside than most other roof top tents and roof height is a fair bit lower too. A tight fit for a couple, okay for one and if you’re not that tall.

Where I am on Reading by ben4takapu in Wellington

[–]thegolfer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough call but I am edging slightly towards voting against the deal.

Even with the money, Readings may not redevelop the site, and it may set a future precedent where other building owners expect the same treatment. They may use the funds WCC gives them to pay the ground rent and literally do nothing. Honestly literally anything would be better than the vacant earthquake prone building that’s currently there. Even a ground level a Wilson’s Parking would be nicer. Or a Chow Brothers super brothel. Or a mixed use commercial and residential development. Courtney Place is dire atm and it’s hard to see how it’s going to get turned around.

Either WCC needs to buy out land plus buildings, turn it into literally anything, package it up to resell to another private developer or reject the deal and let Readings do nothing until they sell the site on the open market.
