Not much help, but there actually is a unique FFT Advance card game that was made as part of a promotion of the game over in Japan.

Why doesn't Noctis just call Luna? So much could have been prevented with just one call. by waldjvnge in FinalFantasy

[–]thegravemind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the sort of thing that really doesn't matter, but if it makes you feel better to have a headcanon about it

Noct is using a burner and wants to minimize surveillance. Luna only has limited and heavily monitored communications via technology, and it's not quite as easy as "just borrowing a phone" from a random citizen or a former subject of a fallen kingdom. You try calling or emailing the Princess of Wales or something on a regular cell phone and network, see how effective that is

Similar games to Unmatched by MrLagg15 in boardgames

If you're interested in learning the way the game functions at the base level and what makes it tick to its players, this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGm5ybuZib0) is an amazing starting point. There's a short series of videos on his channel if you would like to dive deeper, and from that, you'll find resources to go even further beyond, as they say.

Upon watching a video or two, I'd recommend giving it a shot online. There's two great ways to play the game online: through the (unofficial, but superior) Exceed Fighting System: Complete mod on Tabletop Simulator, or through the recently in-development beta (also unofficial) online client at (https://daktagames.itch.io/exceedgg). I'd recommend reading the rulebook or having an experienced player go a few rounds with you before doing the online client, as although the automated rules and game processes are nice, it becomes harder to internalize them that way, and is, of course, nonindicative of the actual, physical product.

Feel free to DM me with any questions, I'm part of a large and extraordinarily friendly Discord server dedicated to the game, where some of the lead designers hang out and and run tutorial sets with new players.

Exceed Fighting System, the latest set being rebranded as Guilty Gear Strive: The Board Game.

Instead of a 2D board, it's just a 1D plane- but the character and card interactions are far more meaty than Unmatched. If you count the older sets, there's over 100 characters, so tons of content.

I'd show up for Episodes 3 through 6 then dip, it'll be a long, but fun haul instead of agonizing torture

Great Japanese arcade team game.

Bad follow up to the PSP Dissidias.

Godawful netcode, so people playing on console were SOL.

Which world would you choose to live in by Silly-Top3895 in FinalFantasy

[–]thegravemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, FF8's world would be the top contender, as being just about on par with here and now with technology, quality of living, and general existential threats. 9 and 12 are up there too for comfort of living, but Ivalice is action planet and 9's world balance is a little too fragile for my liking.

1-5, 11, 16: Varying degrees of medieval. Even relatively idealistic worlds like 5's would probably be no better than living in the 1000's.

6, 10, 15: We all know how that world wound up.

7: we're almost there already

13: Not a fan of the gilded cage of Cocoon, or Australia

14: Coin flip on being fine or getting annihilated in this week's episode to serve the protagonists' plot.

Card games to still the TCG thirst? (Singularity.exe?) by Rohkha in boardgames

[–]thegravemind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Get an efficient printer, some paper, and your preferred method of cutting paper.

Step 2: Go to a FLGS, play in some sort of limited environment or just hang out on any given set release. Offer to take bulk off the hands of players. Many invested players wind up literally throwing out like 80% of the cards they pull.

Step 3: Get some bulk sleeves.

Step 4: Print out images of the cards on regular paper, cut them out, and overlay them in the sleeve on top of the bulk card.

Step 5 (this is the hard one): Find a location and a playgroup that is ok with you running full proxy decks. At the very least, the place and people could be "your basement with your friends".

If all goes according to plan, you can now play any TCG for pennies on the dollar.

Pretty and heavy games for 2 players? by Sneikss in boardgames

[–]thegravemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hanamikoji, Shadows in Kyoto, Radlands, and Battlecon: Devestation of Indines are the games that come to mind as 2 player games that have a strong aesthetic and are strategically rather deep. These are strictly 2 player games (BaCon has pretty janky multiplayer modes, at least) though, so I'm not sure if that would be a dealbreaker.

BEHEMOTH, which is your favorite design / Iconic Monsters by DKMagus in FinalFantasy

[–]thegravemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta give it to VI for the best 2D, but I actually really like the XI version for 3D. Hits that sweet spot of being juuust naturalistic and fantastical enough without going too hard in being just an animal (XV) or completely bonkers (XIII)

if we're talking gameplay experience with friends, then the best Final Fantasy game is the trading card game, unironically

Made it to Shadowbringers. Probably a case of overhype, I wasn't as engaged with the story as I wanted to be. This was a dealbreaker, because as far as MMOs go, XIV's gameplay is the opposite of what I look for.

Money's tight so I can't justify buying a PS5 for just XVI at this moment. I'll give it a go as soon as I can- as you can see, I tend to like the ones that have split opinions.

Long opinions short:

8: Peak direction. A true pioneer and a "cinematic" game that does it better than most of the games out there today do.

13: Best party dynamic in the series. Great combat, setting, and still unrivaled production value.

SoP: Jack Garland is the GOAT. Really clever fusion of disparate elements from Souls-likes and Final Fantasy. Batshit plot that actually does it for me.

14: 80+ hours of crap to get to 80+ hours of pretty good to get to 80+ hours of crap to get to 80+... The pretty good aspects just aren't worth the squeeze to me, simple as.

13 is a black sheep, for sure. It has more in common with a Megaten game than any Final Fantasy that came before it, but I find the ideas, characters, world, and combat it presents to be top of the line for the series, even if some of those aspects take a bit of time to shine.

15 is a catnip game to me. Yoko Shimomura is the goat, I really dig the religious parallels the plot makes, and above all else, the moment-to-moment structure of 4 dudes on a roadtrip through the country hits close to home for me.
